Just a reminder that AI is not very good at writing efficient code:
AI coded: 17.95s/it
After I optimized it: 6.38it/s
No... that's not about 3 times as fast, that's 114x faster. The AI version took 18 seconds to do one operation, my code could to do 6 operations per second!

One thing I have learned over and over is that whatever you code is now, it can always been 10 times faster.
I had a script that created a thumbnail of all videos in a folder. The first script took about 4 seconds per video. Now with optimization, the script can create thumbnails of 100 videos in 1.2 seconds. No not 1.2 seconds per video. All 100 videos are processed in 1.2 seconds ;)

Also, don't get me started on the whole '4 spaces' nonsense. Nobody types 4 spaces, instead everyone is using TAB ... so make the goddamn character a TAB character. The very idea of turning a TAB into four spaces is the sign of madness :)

I'm 100% ignoring Python PEP-8 every single day ... ;) ... and the simplest way to see how idiotic the whole PEP-8 is can be seen with the very first example on their page.
Here they want you to break up the arguments, even though the comment text underneath is much longer.
Seriously Python nerds. Either don't break them up or if you break them up, have one argument per line. And don't even get me started on the whole 79 character limit nonsense. We are not using punch cards anymore.

I discovered that my backup silently deleted all backups. 😲
The problem is that I have a running backup that creates a new backup folder for each day, this way I can always go back to a previous backup. But this creates a ton of backup folders, so I also auto-delete any backup folder older than 30 days.
Can you guess the problem? Rsync also syncs modification dates. So any new folder created is synced to whatever date the original folder has. So every folder was now older than 30 days.

I have a really strange kitchen scale... here is how it works. When you weigh something, it will continuously add 1 to that number. Today I needed 70g of oatmeal, so I put that on the scale and put away the bag ... and it told me it was 70, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, 76, 77, 78, 78, 79, 80, 81, 82, 83, 84, 85...
I mean... how does that even happen? How do you create a kitchen scale that constantly adds one to whatever number. I'm not touching. I'm not adding anything more, it just goes up and up.

One of the problems I have always had when doing data analysis in Python is that it is running in the terminal, and terminals look like something from the 1960s.
What if, for instance, I'm creating a graph or an image?
Well, by default, I would either have to save that as a file and then open it, or call .show(), which would show the graph in a second window. But, what I want is to show the graph inline as an actual pixel-perfect image.

It's not the keyboard that is the problem. It's the bluetooth itself. My computer is saying that there is no longer any bluetooth in the system. The bluetooth chip can no longer be found by Windows. The keyboard is fine. I can connect it to my other computer with no problem :)

Heh... my new site loads in 42 ms... That's the entire site, including getting all the data from the database, checking login, running security, processing the headers, building the html, rendering the page, etc.
But, it's even crazier than that because the python code itself only takes 3.5ms to run. So, it's using 38.5ms for 'networking' and the rest is the site.
I mean, Google.com takes 142ms to load.

Sometimes your optimization can go to far... I just spent 30 minutes optimizing some code that only runs one (per visit), but then I wondering how much of a difference it really made:
Before: 0.000039 seconds
After: 0.000006 seconds
Yeah... I don't think this matters. I mean, it is 6.5 times faster, but we are talking 6 microseconds... ;) ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Heh... I tried to crash ChatGPT. I remember an old TV show where an AI was defeated by being asked to solve a problem that was too complex for it to handle.
So I asked it to give me every possible combination of four words.
This, of course, was no problem. There are 24 combinations, and it gave them to me almost instantly.
Then I stepped it up to six words... and again, it did just fine.
But then I asked it to do twelve words... and it refused. ;)
So, we cannot defeat AIs this way. ;)

I have never liked Ubuntu's auto-update with how it is focusing on uptime rather than security. And, I get it, uptime is important. But it often leaves the system in an insecure state.
So, I have now created my own auto-update script for my server. What this does is to force a full update every time, and, if needed, restarts the server immediately.
This doesn't actually cause any more downtime, since the server would have had to be restarted manually anyway. Now, it's just automatic.

Yeah, Cloudflare is doing something about this. It has bot detection, and a known (good) bots list. It's 'work-in-progress', and I find it misses quite a lot of bots.

Yeah... I mean, how do they even work with those files? Also, the separators are completely inconsistent. Some are put in brackets, others in quotes ... but then some elements are combined into the same quote block. It's just madness ;)

This whole bot thing is just out of control. I setup a new web server this evening, and it took 17 minutes from the domain was pointed to it that a bot coming from Microsoft Azure Datacenter started attacking it. 2 minutes later, another bot from a Swiss data center started trying to find php files (there is no php on my new server. It's completely empty).

There are a lot of really stupid date formats out there, but the one used by apache/nginx is just beyond moronic:

Note to publishers: Stop doing this. Do not expire your "keep me logged in" cookie after only a single week. Unless you are a bank, there is no reason to do this. In fact, you are going to annoy your subscribers, see lower conversions, and your statistics will be all messed up.
The way it works on my site is very simple: the login automatically remembers people for one full year, and the cookie renews every time they visit. So, it's always "1 year from your last visit."

Note to tech companies. I don't want a NAS with built in AI and cloud based service. I want a NAS with plenty of storage expansion slots, running stock Ubuntu so that I can do whatever I want with it, and I want it to be fanless so that it makes no noise whatsoever in my home.

So, I updated to the latest version of Python, which now has color-coded error messages (which is great), but who the f... decided that the colors should be dark purple on a black background?!?!

Uh... I don't actually know. They are just images, screenshots, etc. in my photo library. Pretty much a mix of everything. But my phone is 12mpix, so that a bit more than 4K (as far as I know), but there are a ton of other images too.
