I can see that's from a genAI company (Anthropic), so whatever is written there is probably inaccurate - why would I waste my time reading it?
genAI should only be used for "entertainment", as Microsoft admitted about their Copilot. You shouldn't trust anything written via a genAI program - go to the source instead!

Why would it be devastating for us? Instead of wasting money and energy into "AI" we could use all these resources for much more useful things, like actual research, more efficient programming practices, curing cancer etc. We could better communicate to the population that genAI is wasteful, useless and unethical and that people need to keep their skill levels up and their brains engaged. Other countries that don't want to ban it would fall behind and have massive unemployment, so they'd probably eventually follow us.

Jonny (good kind) is the new #JohnMastodon!
Since @npub1ljm…w8tm 's [thread on Claude code](https://neuromatch.social/@jonny/116324676116121930 ) made the rounds, it leaked out of the Fediverse via different sources (Reddit, Bluesky, LinkedIn, Twitter) and our server is getting a surge of joining requests from people who do not have any idea how Mastodon / Fedi works (they think our server *is* Mastodon) and whose sole purpose is to follow Jonny, who has basically become the embodiment of #Mastodon outside of Mastodon 😂
It's great to see how many "outsiders" are interested in our alternative way of doing social media... but it also means that **we should do much better in advertising the #Fediverse out there**: most people have no idea it exists! and once they realise there is an alternative to the for-profit socials, some of them at least are interested in joining!

I've been trying to use #LibreOffice as a replacement for #MSOffice but it's really not the same, lots of small things that do not work in the same way or that do not exist at all, whether in word/ writer or PowerPoint/ pages.
Is there another MSOffice-equivalent out there that is more similar to Office but non-profit?

Interested in moving from #Windows to #Linux but not sure where to start?
This is going to be a 'live-thread' of me trying to install a windows-like distribution of Linux, "ZorinOS", on my 4-years old #Lenovo Windows10 laptop. I will install it as a dual-boot so that I can still access Win if needed.
It's probably not going to go too smoothly but I'll edit this first post when the thread is done!

hmm, maybe this is the case in the US / Canada?
In Europe / UK we still have relatively good privacy laws (GDPR) and I don't think this is allowed unless the user explicitly opts-in.. I mean I would definitely have stopped using Teams if I learned that they were using my chats to train their LLM

Are you confused in #Teams because sometimes Enter sends message but sometimes it does a line break?
I just realised that when you're in "show formatting options" mode, it is the latter, otherwise the former.
To activate this mode, click on the little A+ pen icon at the bottom of the composing windows.
Of course Teams could just always have Enter do a line break... But that would be too easy and intuitive! ugh

What is the *closest existing alternative to GDocs* which is not owned by an american for-profit?
So far, Libre Office docs could be a replacement but there doesn't seem to be an integrated way to do co-editing online with it?

Here's a tentative explanation :
(1) Academics are trained to think that publishing our research in certain journals is seen by other academics as "more impactful" and "better". So, when we have some result to publish we tend to submit it to specific, "high reputation" journals.
(2) A lot of these journals (for example: "Nature" or "Cell") belong to for-profit editors like Nature Publishing group, Elsevier etc.
(3) The for-profit editors set up a very profitable system where authors / their university pay to publish AND pay to access the articles, the public also pays to read, while authors provide not only the contents but also the added value of publication - peer-reviewing - for free.
(4) By the way, this has been originally setup by Robert Maxwell, who is, guess what??, the father of Ghislaine Maxwell ([source](https://www.theguardian.com/science/2017/jun/27/profitable-business-scientific-publishing-bad-for-science )]
(5) Many researchers do not seem to realise that this is an exploitative system based on smokes and mirrors (the quality of an article is unrelated to the "reputation" of the journal it's published in, and that "reputation" is not quantifiable anyway) so they keep publishing in these journals and some of them still use the journal names for hiring and promotion.
(6) Some journals are non-profit and propose good alternatives to the for-profit system (e.g. "eLife"); however many researchers avoid publishing there because they think it won't be useful to their CV. Some universities or funding organisations say that they do not care about the reputation system (DORA agreements) but the researchers still seem fixated on it.
(7) Some other journals are also non-profit (society journals like Journal of Neuroscience) but they still somehow make huge profits and their CEO / employees get paid a lot, so they don't actually seem that different to the for-profit..
(8) in summary, researchers want to publish in the for-profit journals because they think that these journals have better reputation and they increase our chances of getting jobs and funding. Many researchers believe in this "reputation" story and are either not aware of the exploitative aspects or do not really care about it. Alternatives are not perfect and have been mostly neglected...
*Disclaimer: this is just my point of view for the field of #Neuroscience*
What to do about it? That's probably for another post.. But personally I try not to publish in for-profit journals, and I prioritize reviewing for non-profit ones.

It is not so much about disrespect but more about trustworthiness - if you use fake images, without even indicating that they are fake (even if it is obvious), why should we trust that the other images, videos, or text that you post here are not fake? Maybe all of the other videos were fake too?

Trying to move away from the #Microsoft suite (#Word, #Powerpoint, #Excel), mostly because of their forcing of #Copilot on users.
It seems that the choice is between #LibreOffice or #OpenOffice - which one would you recommend that is most compatible with MS formats, has similar functionalities (but with #NoAI ) and is good for collaboration (e.g. can do tracked changes)?

Two months ago I asked what #Linux distribution new Linux users used and liked, hoping that they would converge to a few, very windows-like distributions... haha 😅
The results are (only focusing on new users):<li>Ubuntu (x2)</li><li>Arch (x3) including forks of Arch like CachyOS, Endeavour with maybe KDE Plasma</li><li>Mint (x2) with maybe Cinnamon - but apparently, Mint is often out of date</li><li>Fedora "Silverblue" or "Linux Workstation"</li><li>Pop OS!</li><li>open SUSE Tumbleweed with KDE Plasma 6</li>
Conclusion: no clear converging! And it is also quite hard to get input from new users, as the experienced users really want to share as well!

Je suis d'accord sur tout ça.. (sauf que je dirais qu'il y a encore quelques médias qui font toujours plutôt bien leur boulot, par exemple je trouve Le Monde assez rigoureux). Mais justement, si on est d'accord que Mélenchon est diabolisé exprès par les médias, on peut prévoir que si c'était quelqu'un d'autre ils essaieraient de le/la diaboliser aussi. Je le trouve plutôt résistant à la "diabolisation", ce n'est pas dit que le suivant le sera aussi.
Après, encore une fois, il n'est pas parfait et ça m'énerve aussi parfois de voir qu'il ne laisse pas la place à quelqu'un de moins controversé, ou qu'il n'essaie pas d'être plus diplomate pour s'allier avec les autres partis de gauche. C'est comme les écologistes, ils ont plutôt de bonnes idées généralement, mais des fois l'un d'entre eux sort des idées bizarres (généralement non-scientifiques) et ça gâche le tableau. Mais je crois qu'il faut arriver à faire des compromis si on veut avancer.

c'est sûr qu'il a un gros ego et une personnalité très marquée. On aime ou on déteste. Bien sûr, ce qui devrait compter plus que la personnalité, c'est le programme. Je pense que les intentions de vote auxquelles tu fais référence montrent juste que la France tend plus à droite/ extrême droite qu'à gauche. Est-ce qu'un candidat LFI gagnerait contre un candidat FN, même si ce n'était pas Mélenchon? Je pense que non car le centre et la droite voudraient voter contre. Même s'ils sont supposés suivre au contraire le pacte républicain (qui a permis de mettre Macron au pouvoir deux fois).
Je ne suis pas fan de Melenchon mais je pense qu'il est récupérable. Il faudrait juste qu'il s'ajuste sur ces sujets, effectivement la politique extérieure. Mais s'il y a de meilleurs candidat(e)s je ne dirais pas non, mais qui ?

This is not a joke... A [press release](https://www.gov.uk/government/news/national-drought-group-meets-to-address-nationally-significant-water-shortfall ) from the UK government about a meeting of the "national drought group", in order to "save water at home", suggests to:

ooh.. so there is no actual / official list of criteria that are used by this "REF" panel to categorize the papers?
By metric do you mean like the dreaded impact factor metric?
The number of 3 or 4* papers I get apparently influences my promotion chances, hence my salary. Does this mean I should choose to publish in journals with higher impact factor even if they are for-profit or have expensive publication fees?

I am not usually patriotic but in the grand scheme of things, I think #France is not doing so bad, as a country. French people do not necessarily realise how advanced we are on social topics and how precious these things are (e.g. education, healthcare, pension system, etc.).
Of course, a lot more could be done for a fairer distribution of wealth and a much stronger approach on ecological topics.

I guess this assumes that a lot more humans are nice than bad. I would like to believe this, and I think this is how humanity has survived originally - by helping each other, including the weakest members - but I am not fully convinced it is the case.
Or rather, even if there's more nice people overall, they seem to very easily follow dictators, strong-looking leaders that shout loudly but are just really selfish. How do we avoid that from happening in our utopic, border-free world?

I generally think this as well. But then I also think about the large variety of human societies that we have today, and how I would rather live in some (say, France) rather than others (say, the US, or those with no women's rights). If everyone could live everywhere without having to accept the laws of each country because there was no concept of country - wouldn't it end up being about "might makes right"?
Or maybe we can have no borders, no countries, and still somehow all agree to live in harmony, between each other and also between humans and nature? 🤔

That's it, I am reaching my limit with the 'genAI' stuff.
I moved from #Google to #DuckDuckGo years ago to avoid the privacy issues and avoid supporting a giant company that's destroying the planet - now DuckDuckGo keeps force-feeding me 'AI-assisted answers' that I DO NOT WANT.
I've been using #Firefox for at least 15 years, for the same reasons, now I update #Firefox and "what's new with Firefox" you wonder? Well Firefox has a "new sidebar" that lets you "keep your AI assistant handy" - an "AI assistant" that I DO NOT WANT.
Stop force-feeding us useless, invasive, energy-hungry 'AI' that nobody is asking for!
Any suggestions for a No-AI equivalent to Duckduckgo? As for browser, I'm going to move on to #Vivaldi.

I have a few questions, but feel free to answer in DM or not at all:<li>Do you have a limit on how many people can join? </li><li>Do you have conditions on who can join (like, do they have to be academics or it doesn't matter)?</li><li>Do you mind if I mention your platform in the NeuroMethods slack so people could give it a try?</li><li>Where is the data stored and who has access to it?</li><li>How is the data backed up (say, if the server crashes)?</li><li>do you have limits on number of messages or size of attachments? Hi all, the recurrent question of backing up (or not) #NeuroMethods slack is there again.
Lots of people are suggesting backing up the contents onto some #Google product, whether gmail or google docs. I know that gmail is not private (google analyses the contents of the mails) but is Google document private?
Otherwise is there an alternative to google docs that would actually be private? I imagine if it is private then it will not be free..

they tried the Right + far right and it didn't work (predictably - they all suck) so now they *should* try the Left + Right. Doesn't matter that the far right is against it if the others manage to agree.
The problem is that the left missed its chance the first time because they were too divided... I'm hoping they'll grow up and seize the opportunity this time...
