I managed to get myself a NeoGeo Pocket Color. As much as I generally lack enthusiasm for video game collecting these days, I make a small exception for handhelds as they take up less space and this system in particular is one that I have always been curious about ever since I skimmed through my older brother's video game magazines.

In the wake of the news of Fredrick Brennan's (8chan creator) passing, I was reminded that I too had some dream of creating an imageboard, but I never got around to it and I'm glad I did.
Basically, much like how 8chan was basically a fusion of Reddit and 4chan, my idea was a fusion of Twitter and 4chan, as in instead of boards, threads would be grouped via tags that anyone can create on the fly. The only rules would be to keep everything legal and all spam threads would be deleted. I never got around to it because of my limited knowledge of programming and servers at the time and I felt like my more progressive family members would disown me for creating such a site.
I'm glad I never created that site because I feel like most people who run community sites for niche and dissident audiences tend to regret it later in life and go down dark paths. Though, I'm not against such sites in principle, I just hope that if you create such a community that you are prepared for what you are getting into. At least Hot Wheels seemed to have enjoyed the final years of his life.

I've added coins that are dropped by the enemies upon death, even though they don't do anything. I thought about having shops in the levels and have the player buy power-ups like in Kid Icarus or Alex Kidd.

Just use a mixture of baking soda and powdered sugar. If you mix them together, ants can't distinguish between the two. The powder sugar acts as bait, while the baking soda kills them by reacting to their stomach acid and causing their abdomens to explode.
Just remember it has to be powdered sugar.

I'm currently toying around with having gravity switches in the levels instead of having the player being able to flip the gravity at will. I feel like there are too many ways levels can be cheesed if the player can flip gravity when ever they want.

Decided to have the player be able to actually jump as I realized that it would be much harder to dodge certain enemies and projectiles if he can only flip gravity. The gravity flipping mechanic is still there. As of now, it is done by pressing the jump button while in mid-air.
I guess this is a Metal Storm clone now.

I've noticed that prior to the Charlie Kirk shooting, the whole left/right divide was kind of on the decline (it still existed, but the mainstream left and right were finding common ground on some issues like Epstein, Palantir, and even the war in Gaza), but after the shooting it has went back in full force.
As for Roman Storm, people getting arrested for crypto related projects, even if they don't violate any laws doesn't surprise me.
There was one libertarian activist named Ian Freeman who was arrested for selling bitcoin without a license, even though there is no such license. He followed the law, but the feds were trying to get him arrested for the longest time (he was part of The Free State Project and there is a certain FBI agent that has been dedicated to stalking and cracking down on Free Staters) and they finally found an excuse to arrest him when an elderly couple got scammed and went to his ATM to buy bitcoin.
The worst part is that if he was just selling bitcoin and wasn't expressing libertarian sentiment, he would've probably gotten a lighter sentence or wouldn't have been sent to jail at all. It just shows that you can be punished more if you hold an ideology that the judge doesn't like.

I'm so out of touch with modern games that I don't know the full extent of what you are talking about, but as a hobbyist gamedev, I do agree that balancing difficulty is hard. Unless you pay close attention, it's easy to make your game extremely easy or extremely hard.
Story Difficulty Mode is just a result of games prioritizing story over gameplay and now you have a bunch of casual gamers who enjoy games for their unique story telling and nothing more.

Decided to change the death whirl sound effect to make it sound less 8-bit. I don't know how it turned out. Should I play with the instruments more? Is it fine just 8-bit? Or should I keep it like it is in this video?

Changed the lava tiles to make it look like it's bubbling, but it ended up looking weird. Judging from other games, lava tiles tend to have 4 frames of animation instead of three, but if I add an extra frame then I need to add an extra frame to the water tilesets.

Fixed the boss bug. Although I didn't record the bug, the bug was that some bosses would just hang upon death. Turns out they aren't calling the animation method.

Finally added a victory fanfare after completing a floor. I just used the fanfare I used in my previous games (which was a CC0, 8-bit fanfare from OpenGameArt), put it in NeuralNote and changed the instruments.

My only beef with it is the inconsistent syntax and code style. It's decent for small scale web projects (guestbooks, forums, wikis), but you are better off using something else for anything bigger.
