Because someone asked, I made a quick video showing a development workflow for #Apple2 using #FujiNet.
Disk images are placed on a TNFS file server, and mounted read-only by the Apple2. Compile, disk, push to TNFS, and test.

I've been following Wayland ever since it first appeared.
It has a number of fundamental improvements that I agree with, but it also has a huge number of edge cases that are still not covered. I'm concerned because there is a concerted effort to completely eject Xorg from every major distribution IN THE SHORT TERM, and this will leave an unknown (and substantial) number of hardware configurations out in the cold.

I can't use #Wayland with my #Linux system. Performance is terrible.
I have a 2021 Lenovo P17Gen1.
It has both an Intel P630 and NVIDIA RTX3000 Mobile GPU, running as a Prime pair.
It has a 4K eDP display, and two LG 4K displays, one connected via USB-C, and one via DP, via a TB3 Dock, all running at 60Hz.
It has 128GB of RAM, and 4TB of striped BTRFS SSD.
I am running the latest #Hyprland.
I tried running on #Arch, which cut the frame rate worse than half ANY time I connected an external 4K display ANYWHERE on either the laptop, or dock, DP, or USB-C. It refused to work via HDMI.
Switched to #Ubuntu and use Koolit's #Ubuntu installer for Hyprland. Performance is close to 60fps, but not quite. Stutters, and OBS runs at an average of 10fps, regardless of whether #PipeWire is in use, or not. Unusable.
I have been a #Linux user since September of 1991, and I can't even begin to know where the F**K to go to even diagnose this problem, due to the sheer number of variables.
Is it the NVIDIA drivers?
Is it Wayland?
Is it Hyprland?
Is it Pipewire?
Why is the performance better on #Ubuntu than on #Arch?
If I were to use Wayland, what COMPARABLE GPU would I use instead?
Do I just completely jettison using a laptop and build a workstation instead?
Why in the flying F**K can I not get stable vsync?!
I am posting this, because I am genuinely looking for knowledgable answers from knowlegable people, and I am _VERY_ concerned, that given the mass exodus from Xorg to Wayland, that I need to figure out something before I end up with a system configuration that is unusable.

Things you do for #Atari2600 #GameDev that you do nowhere else: COUNT CYCLES.
The pictured code being developed on the #Apple2 using a Frob, implements the 6 digit score display by utilizing the unique VDEL registers for players which allowed you to get enough time to write 6 different player images very close together.
This is important because there is only 76 cycles on a scanline, and you're changing things as the raster sweeps.

#Frob #GameDev #Apple2 #Atari2600 Current status, reading and comparing the implementation of EXPLORER's embedded FMON, versus the FMON that gets loaded by AMON. There are some differences, need to understand why EXPLORER works and FMON doesn't (even though FMON is being called from the vblank).

Frobco published source code for their tools, because it was expected that users would write their own, such as this player editor I whipped up, which uses bi-directional comms to send data entered at the computer to a program running on the VCS.

ATARI did not document the 2600. Besides the code in the manual, You had to reverse engineer other games to learn how things worked, seen here using Apple2 monitor.

We have serial busses, SIO (Atari), AdamNet, IEC (Commodore), IWM (Apple2), ComLynx, DriveWire (CoCo), RS232, and the RC2014 uses SPI.
We are developing parallel bus implementations, now, and we are taking our time to experiment, so more will be possible soon.

Somebody asked me:
"Why bother with FPGA? Why don't you just use an emulator at that point?"
My view on modern #retrocomputing:
* Hardware will fail. If we are to preserve long-term, both emulation and gate level simulation are critical.
* FPGAs can implement things that are hard to implement in software, and vice versa.
* Improvements in one will positively affect the other.

I do not disrespect the nostalgia, but I have an unusual perspective on #retrocomputing:
I never stopped using any of this stuff, so for me, it's a continuum. I used all this stuff yesterday, I use it today, and I will use it tomorrow.

We are working to bring FujiNet to the Z80/8080 systems, through multiple I/O ports (serial, parallel and bus).
FujiNet does have an HTTP/S protocol adapter in its firmware, and a browser is written in C which can be ported over to CP/M (and built e.g. with Hitech or Aztec, or with a bit of serious massaging even with BDS C) ;)

one of the greatest boons to recent day retrocomputing has been the RP2040/2350 in the Raspberry Pico devices. Its programmable IO macroblock has opened the floodgates for a whole new class of software defined peripherals e.g. PicoMem and PicoGUS on the PC... essentially deleting FPGAs and CPLDs from many designs, and replacing them with a part that's 50 cents in singles.

front panel clock? not the 550. It had lots of other weird things too. INT 15 equipment list was broken beyond belief. But all things considered, it was built to a price point...
...looking back, I don't think anyone predicted that Taiwan would be ultimately responsible for homogenizing the PC market and bottoming out all the pricing ...

know all those machines too. The 550 had the tiniest bootstrap ROM. BIOS came off disk, and had the funniest error msg I ever saw: "INT 13 can not be used for benchmark purposes"

wrote code for the rainbow, a non stop succession of migraines. I did like the 7220 based color adapter, but almost no one had one.
I wanna know who thought having a shared head assembly was a good idea? I mean at least I understood that the lack of a formatting tool was so they could sell disks at a premium , as shitty as that was, but, making it so you had to flip the disk different orientations depending on which drive was plain silly.

my CP/M environment these days is Marcelo Dantas' excellent RunCPM, which I embedded into FujiNet.
Uses the SD card as filesystem, but also extended BDOS calls to do network things.

Tasks under #CommodoreAmiga Exec can be given a max priority of +127, allowing them to always be guaranteed to run, and not be pre-empted (unless otherwise yielding via e.g. DoIO()).
You can hear the difference between two PAC-MAN music tasks scheduled 0 versus +127.
