I know people studying HTML/CSS purely as an art form, fucking rad! That was intended as The Point of my post, against arguments that the web is toooo complicated for it now.
I think instead, we've lost discoverability. I'm not sure the same pipeline into & through it still exists? Or I expect it's much harder to fall into – less opportunities for play built into the walled gardens. Less chance to 'customize myspace' etc?

i want to commit on a project and never launch it. i want to code slower, spend more time choosing colors, re-invent wheels that will never get used - not better, just different - taking as long as possible.

There are still absolutely beautiful websites using basic css and html with little or no js. professional web dev has gotten more complex along with specialization, but you can still build personal sites with 20yr old tech. and some new stuff is simpler.
What we've lost, it seems to me, is the broad indie pipeline to both learning and socializing (and socially learning).
partly because we who learned it 20yrs ago have landed in more specialized/complex jobs.

This was the first approach I was thinking about, and I like the simplicity. Might be even simpler with some kind of lever/leaf switch that is pushed open by the gallery of the lid, as it slots down inside?
In either case, the main concern is mounting, and wires casting shadows - but all that requires a prototype to know if it's a real issue.

i'm hoping for both a glow and light out the top. the extreme simplified version is buying a lamp kit, mounting a standard bulb at the base, and running a cable out the side. the jar is just a lamp shade.
From there the question is if I can make it more magical.

more convenient except that turned off you have a lid full of electronics sitting around, rather than the whole thing being packed away.
For light, I'm imaging a ring of led pointing up but kinda out near the edges.
But you're right that recharging will be a pain. I could put a hole for a charging wire at the base, but that could still be fiddly.

I think I'll need brighter lights, since the porcelain I'm using is only somewhat translucent. It looks great when I hold a jar up to the under-cabinet puck lights in my kitchen.

Is it reasonable to think I could make an LED lamp inside a porcelain jar, with a proximity sensor to turn it on when the lid is open?
I see adafruit has sensors & LEDs, but I'm not sure how much circuit design would be required (zero experience) or how many lights & how much power I need.
I imagine it only becomes practical as a table lamp if I make it plug-in, but a battery option would be magical. Electronics should be small at the base of the jar.

I often think about making a new browser. I mean, as a business it sounds awful. But as a product to design, that would be a top choice.

Seeing a lot of posts about generating OpenGraph images for 11ty posts, and suddenly realized my new approach will fail.
I generate an html page, and I just want to snapshot that page in a build step. Right now it's looking for a URL, but (obviously) the URL doesn't exist yet. That's the point.
But all the other approaches involve non-html image generation, or HTML/CSS limitations. And I don't want to do that. I just want my thing to work, please. Thanks.

CSS Working Group resolved to allow range syntax in style queries. We can compare with a container variable:
@ container style(--var < 5em)
But can also compare normal values:
style(1em < 20px)
style(sibling-count() > 3)
This style function can also be used for conditions of inline if()

it seems to me like what you're pointing to is systems. you can't just change individual behavior to address the issues of capitalism, behavior is downstream of systemic incentives and infrastructure.
it doesn't matter if some people choose to do more, if that choice can't snowball to threaten my basic survival. The problem is not over-achievers making me look bad, but competition being required if I want to eat food or live inside.

Do you ever resize the browser window during the course of your day – apart from testing a responsive layout or using dev tools?

It's actually slightly more difficult on the same server, but i don't mind if you want to.
To do it on one server you need to get yourself an invite link (in your preferences), log out, and set up a new account. Or use browser profiles/different browsers. Or there are third-party tools that might allow logging into multiple at once.
With different servers, there's no conflicting logins issue to deal with.

Yeah, that's what I've always done (multi-slide reveals) - but I did add an issue to consider in-slide reveals, and I'd enjoy working on that with you if you want.
It relates broadly to another feature I've wanted: named slides with stable IDs for internal linking. (Both require more flexibility to how we handle the forward/backward navigation logic)

When we "keep specificity flat" in #CSS we have to give up on semantic selectors and built-in naming conventions, in return for… also giving up control in the cascade.
We can't avoid the cascade, it applies to all styles. We can only refuse to use the tools that are available for *managing* the cascade.
Start using Cascade Layers, and let your specificity run wild. It's a useful tool!

I'm not holding up well.
I wanted to be more clear in my #btconf talk, that when i talk about the cascade, i mean a resistance to fascism. I mean that politics live inside our tools.
but i took out the slides where i say it out loud. And Im sad about that. But also knew I wouldn't make it through the talk. I couldn't say "I'm illegal in two states already, and worse is coming"

I know this is a Bad question that will lead me down the Path of Darkness. But…
Where do you start with mechanical keyboards? What I really mean is: where do you go next after having one for a bit, and thinking "yeah, this but really customized to my needs"? What do you try next? How do you test switches? It seems like the learning curve is steep and involves a lot of exploratory purchasing?

Yeah, rel alternate is real interesting - but I've found browsers don't update well when you change that.
I imagine you could use a preload rule to load the disabled styles before usage. Not an issue for my use-case of turning things off after page load.

The attribute would have to be toggled with JS, if you're changing it based on user interaction. I'm using that for a CSS on/off toggle in my new design (and maybe a layer-select, TBD).

Could be. Or we'll start to find more use-cases for it? I already expect to use it on most sites that have any sort of image gallery. That's not my highest priority, but it is something I'll use. And for people currently relying on JS to achieve this (a lot of sites), it will be a big win. 🤷🏻‍♀️
Browsers don't always ask what I would prioritize, but when they ship something, I appreciate them spending time to get it right – because it impacts the whole language.

The CSSWG as agreed to publish a first Working Draft for Masonry layout – with the two major proposals merged where possible, and otherwise presented side by side. Most of the differences are syntax only.

Style queries and scope are the two that I don't really try to get away with yet. I just know they are missing support in a whole browser.
But light-dark is much easier to put behind a feature query, so I've been playing with it a lot in my side projects. I've been putting color-mix and oklch behind the same query even though they have better support, and then provide a fallback based mostly on browser defaults.

:has() is at 94.41% of tracked global browser support. That's pretty good. Cascade Layers are at 96.3%.
oklch at 93% (with issues)
color-mix at 91.18%
CSS Nesting at 90% (if you're careful)
@ scope at 84.83% (0% Firefox)
light-dark() at 82.7%
custom property style queries at 73.49% (0% Firefox)
There's no magic number, and a lot we can do with progressive enhancement – but these are some of the recent #CSS features I reach for most often, and wish they would Just Work Already, Please.
