That businesses with a line of credit can pay their suppliers without having any money - the banks create it on their behalf. From the point of view of the supplier, their account receives the money, but from the point of view of the business, the cost doesn’t show up until they settle their debt with the bank at some later date. A win-win scenario.
The problem is just that this relies on the bank’s ability to create money. If they had to put up some actual finite money they could not simply create, I suspect they might have to be a lot more careful with who they extend credit to (since default carries a higher risk when money is not lent into existence, and since the limit on money supply would mean only the most productive uses of money are prioritised). It might therefore not be feasible for banks to provide this service as widely and effectively as they do today. Which makes a peer-to-peer solution more attractive.
(FYI, this is just based on my current understanding of today’s system, and I’m happy to be corrected if I’ve missed something.)

To what extent do you see this working in the current environment? My first thought was that since private banks can print money, they do provide a relatively efficient solution to this problem. A line of credit from a bank means the merchant doesn’t have to rely on the producer’s credit worthiness, but rather the bank’s. In fact, since credit and money are essentially indistinguishable today, the merchant really only has to trust the money.
Do you see this eBill system as having a place in the current economy, or as preparation for a world where lines of credit no longer are feasible?

Very helpful perspective!
The way @nprofile…8npz describes DarkFi, it seems like it has potential to be close to ideal for privacy should it prove to work as intended. But a lack of robustness facing bugs would be an issue. Not to mention making people trust it enough to adopt it.
Perhaps going for some fully encrypted Bitcoin second-layer is a good tradeoff?

Generating the proof seems like a low price to pay. Especially if it’s (as you mentioned) just a couple of seconds.
But transmitting and validating proofs would both increase the cost of operating a node. So perhaps you could say that with Bitcoin the risk is that an attacker can exploit the lack of privacy to make it unreasonably difficult for most people to adopt it as a currency. Whereas with privacy focused currencies the risk lies in the lack of decentralisation - too many users might put of convenience outsource their voting rights. Am I onto something?
Also, would similar L2 solutions to those of Bitcoin work on top of privacy coins? Or might the inherent lack of information be a hurdle?

Do Monero or DarkFi make any security tradeoffs for their base layer privacy?
Bitcoin does security and monetary policy really well because the blockchain is fully auditable. But surely full privacy makes audits less effective? How do these alternatives get around this?

I was just reading about the «Intelligent Internet» protocol. Essentially #ProofOfWork, but specifically proof of «useful work» i.e., AI compute.
Adding some productive byproduct of the energy spent mining seems like a great idea if possible. But to me it seems like it would be difficult to replicate the security of #Bitcoin in such a system.
Anyone more knowledgeable - giving this the benefit of the doubt - how secure could such a system be? What are the tradeoffs made to allow the energy to be more useful?

I assume it would take countries issuing IDs in a different format, but would it be possible to store, say, a passport in your safebox and then prove things like age, nationality, issuing authority using zero knowledge proofs? Perhaps even at some point scan your fingerprint in some companion device to prove the ID is yours without revealing all info?
That way you could all kinds of verifications, including online age verification, without contributing to your digital twin…

What benefits does the design of #Bitcoin have compared to that of #Monero?
Assume that both have equally large and decentralised networks (unless something inherent to the design makes this unlikely).
And what disadvantage is there to having the privacy of Monero? Surely it makes verifying transactions more difficult, but where exactly does this translate into a disadvantage?
Also assume that I am quite ignorant.

What is the best book to orange pill someone?
My friends and I do a yearly reading challenge where each nominates a book and we have to read them all by the end of the year.

I don’t quite understand this relationship. When gold miners halt production, no gold is mined. But with Bitcoin, isn’t a new block mined every ~10 minutes regardless of the amount of active miners? I.e., isn’t production relatively constant?

Side note on diversity:
Diversity of thought breeds better ideas. When ideas are challenged from all angles, they are improved upon.
If one seeks to build a well-functioning society with people from diverse backgrounds, then diversity of origin might very well be the source of the diversity of thought required to succeed.
Whether you want to build such a society or not is another question altogether. There is much to be said for a relatively homogeneous population, in terms of ease of governance at least.
Diversity of thought is always good.
And some of the most multicultural cities in the world are amazing. There is something beautiful about the places where everyone truly is created equal.

There is an argument to be made that "being forcibly shoved together with outsiders who hate them" is not what is going on here, even if it can feel that way.
First of all, most immigrants are simply looking for a better life without hating anyone. Problems arise since culture clash makes assimilation difficult. Managing this is up to each country sovereignly responsible for its own border policy. It is also a very human reaction to begin to resent those who treat you poorly, so if immigrants aren't treated well, hate will grow.
Second of all, being too one-sided (ie. "outsiders should not be forced upon us") risks missing an important part, namely why people want to emigrate in the first place. Colonial history is often brought up, but just look at what is going on today. Constant meddling in foreign countries' politics, sponsoring coups, forever wars, destabilising regions, as well as @nprofile…lwjj's work on the IMF/World Bank... If countries with predominantly ethnically White European populations want to stop the inflow of immigrants, the first and most obvious action should be to stop causing chaos at the source of immigration. Of course, as is so often the case, there is a profit motive here that might hinder such action.
Blaming the desperate people who, through no fault of their own, seek to escape tragedy is a slippery slope. The West should take a look in the mirror and help the rest of the world prosper. A prosperous Africa, Latam, Middle East etc. is a benefit to The West. 8bn people in service of 8bn people. No-one leaves their country in favour of one where they do not feel welcome unless they feel forced to.

@nprofile…4hxr often talks about how the idea of growing out of debt is not realistic. The idea is that as technology improves and productivity grows exponentially, prices will fall, and the real value of the debt will grow, making it harder in real terms to repay.
This makes sense for private debt, but wouldn't this kind of growth solve sovereign debt problems?
If the Fed/CB aims at 2% inflation, this will in time require an ever increasing expansion of the money supply, and if that money enters the system by buying treasuries, then eventually the Fed/CB should end up owning all the debt, at which point the debt crisis is essentially "averted". (Of course, while Cantilloning the benefits of technology away from the many and towards the few...)

Definitely agree with the calling other opinions into question thing. I try to use that to check myself whenever I'm listening to someone I think initially has a lot of good points.
There are a couple of topics where it for me shines through if people on the right politically will actually reflect deeply to find the "correct" answer, or whether they're willing to regurgitate every talking point of the right.
Likewise when people on the left know all the genuinely good arguments, but also subscribe to every single point of craziness from the woke left.
I'm always disappointed when good speakers turn out not to be good thinkers...

I disagree with @nprofile…hzx2... He is a seemingly nice guy who has identified the same problem as bitcoiners, namely how the system (the monetary system, though he might say the financial system) is designed to steal value from the middle and lower classes to the benefit of the financial/capital classes.
He only really differs in that he hasn't gone far enough down the monetary rabbit hole as to realise how much of a problem our money is. So from his perspective, the system, or root cause, cannot be solved, so his solution treats the symptoms, not the problem itself (high wealth taxes to counteract the unjust effects of the system).
I know bitcoiners aren't the biggest fans of taxes, to say the least, but if you see what's happening without seeing the deeper cause, I think it is a logical solution (though one might argue authoritarian).
As to "bitcoin going to zero", I wouldn't spend too much time on it. He clearly hasn't understood it. And bitcoin does seem like a pyramid scheme before you realise it checks all the boxes to be a legitimate money.

"Price stability" translates this from the monetary pie to the economical pie of goods and services.
If a central bank achieves its goal of price stability - 2% CPI inflation - and we assume the inflation is weighed up for by a mix of stocks, bonds and interest on deposits, one's slice of the pie, or goods and services that can be afforded, stays the same.
This seems like a good thing, both to the central bankers and majority of the population, since we are used to inflation as a naturally occurring phenomenon. In fact, most people (and perhaps even many central bankers) believe that the central bank in this case has done a great job.
There are two main problems. Although people might not notice the pie growing in size (productivity gains) when looking at their own, unchanging slice. But they will notice that the contents of the pie changes. All necessities in their slice are slowly replaced by cheap consumer goods (the CPI does not include houses etc., and cheaper electronics and plastics will make up for more expensive food) - all the while the slice stays the same price on paper.
The second problem is that the ever-growing part of the pie ends up somewhere (ie. those closest to the money creation). This is the most dangerous, as when inequality gets out of hand, societal unrest risks getting out of hand as well.
The slice of the bitcoin pie remains constant as a proportion of both the bitcoin pie and the economical pie of goods and services. In nominal terms, while the slice of the bitcoin pie remains constant just like in the fiat pie, it translates to slice of the economical pie of goods and services that grows in proportion to the pie itself.

I'd say the monetary premium tending to zero (rather than the money itself) is more likely. Gold price would in that case go to its utility value. Debt tokens would perhaps be repriced in the winning money to some extent? Imo if there's a chance the monetary premium of gold disappears, it'll happen far from now. Most likely some of the monetary market cap should still be captured by other monies than the main winner.

Does anyone know why I appear to have lost 20 sats in the cashu app? Adding up all transactions in my history suggests I should have 20 minibits ecash sats, yet there's none there.
I was able to recover them with the seed phrase in minibits, so they should still be in the wallet.

You could print without borrowing.
The government is endebted to the bond market, but the federal reserve/central bank (through quantitative easing or similar) could buy all the bonds with money that is simply created, not borrowed.
That way, the government's debt would be owed to the fed, at which point it could simply be cancelled.
The fed would not have to buy all the debt at once, but could do this in stages. To me, it looks like (and please fact check me if anyone knows) the dips in the graph overlap pretty well with previous QE periods or, as was the case in other crises like covid, the slashing of interest rates (which is abother way of printing money).

No, of course not. But surely we want the currency to circulate. If nation states and large institutions (perhaps even hodlers to some extent) gobble up all the bitcoin, do we not risk there being too little left for it to work?
(Of course, if what does circulate is adopted as a currency, prices would likely be high enough to entice holders to spend. I'm just worried it'll be more difficult to adapt to using it as a currency if most is held for the very long term.)

Why doesn't massive centralisation put the network at risk? If someone held 95% of all M2 dollars (mstr nowhere near that, obviously), would that not pose a risk to the dollar as a currency?

To me the whole idea of buying or taking over Greenland seems crazy and like it would not be a good thing for the world (open to arguments). Even "purchasing" a democratic takeover seems dodgy to me. The US already exerts a lot of power, and Greenland is open for business, so building bonds that way seems like the better way to go for me, potentially forming a long term partnership as Greenland gains its independence at some point in the future.
Geothermal energy for mining+heating, however, seems like a great fit to me. It could be a great opportunity for companies in the space with a proof of concept on a larger scale as an added bonus.

Paper wallet related question: could I not just write down any 2^256 bit number I can think of to create a private key? If I can, why is this never done? And would I necessarily need software to hash out the public key, or could this also be done offline by hand?

Can someone explain why it is infeasible to grab a pencil and a sheet of paper and create a private key by jotting down my favourite numbers and letters?
Wouldn't any 2^(256) number be a valid key?
And if it is, what is it about the hash function that makes it impossible to generate a public key from my made-up private key by hand?
