I had a dream last night that I ended up meeting a fedi fren (no longer active) irl. for some reason there was a mixture of present and past realities and complete fictions. I was on a road trip with my parents, but I was my current age. Apparently dream yukari thought that this fren lived with their mother (sorry fren) and she was a trucker who lived somewhere remote out west. We were both converging on the same town and we figured that out through chatting. So I asked and my folks picked this fren up and we went to get some food through the drive-thru and me and friend got to chat. We talked about anime, music, and all sorts of things that we used to chat about on fedi. It was like we were picking up the conversation from where we last left off. Also, in the dream my fren explained why they weren't on fedi but that they were happy that we could talk once more. Towards the end my parents made some pretty passive aggressive comments about my fren and they crashed out on them. There was also some difficulty finding a place where fren's dream mom could pick them up.

stayed up too late fedi. the p6 is a real time sink at times. recording a sample, figuring out what you can do with it, arranging and recording took longer than I thought.
I had some fun, too bad there was something fucky with the recording.

actually I am not happy with my tools.
the return of yukari music was supposed to be glorious... but it just... well the composition was strained and not as good as I know I am capable of...
well anyways I had a lot of trouble with lmms. but future efforts should work out better from the get go.

I think the ethics of sample based music are a difficult topic for me, because most mainstream music education in the west focuses on the western classical period. While I am not expert on how the western masters thought about "owning" music, it is clear that taking pieces and bits from other composers was just an accepted practice. Sometimes done as a compliment and sometimes as satire.
On a more popular level, playing other people's music was the standard in pop music for most of the 20th century. Even now, much of pop music is ghost written.
with the advent of electronic music and its move from the academy into the popular space ( including sample based genres like hiphop) very few of the underground pioneers asked for permission to sample music.
all of this to say copyright applying to sampled music is dumb and gay, but this is not the question on my mind this day.
How much does an artist really need to ask permission to sample another work? the way copyright is trending towards being more restrictive, using any idea that some faggot claimed (even though it comes from a western tonal system that only has so many different expressions) will cause the copyright mafia to come after you.
I am also going to rant about the very Creative Commons license that I use (if there were a CC version of the +Nigger license I would use it)... I feel like it just a house of cards. It only works because people agree on it to some extent, but what is stopping corpo from stealing from the CC as they already rape the Public Domain.
that's my low iq stream of consciousness rant.

but actually that's pretty cool. I think the toil of doing things outside of a DAW is somewhat of a meme right now, but sometimes a DAW and its ease of use stifles creativity. there is some sauce in limiting yourself in some way that can really get you thinking outside of the box musically.

gm fedi. it seems surreal that I am back on the fedi after such a long break. really should have had a backup plan in mind when my old instance died. been pretty busy in that time. less time for music than I have hoped, but i have built up a small setup to dip my toes into dawless production.
The Roland Aira line seemed pretty neat to me, so I bought the P6 sampler and J6 "Juno presets in a box" The P6 is fun, but definitely a babbies first sampler. The J6 is a little disappointing, I also bought a little midi engine that I can use with midi controller (mostly so that i could make some cheesy dungeon synth). All and all, its not much but it's a start.
Going dawless (really semi dawless cause I need to record shit sonehow) makes me think about music differently. Even though things trend toward more repetitive, everything feels more deliberate.
Lets face it. the p6 definitely was made to cash in on the lofi trend, but its granular synth and effects keep me playing around with it, despite its limitations.
