@nprofile…ffls data on a page only moves during deletes or page splits. But sure, the first write to a page moves the entire page to a new copy. The idea was to provide a relocate callback for such cases but that has never been implemented.
The design was only meant to support pointer references within a single entry. Not to other entries.

There are B+tree variants that try to defer/batch rebalancing, but indeed they're quite complex. io_uring doesn't offer much to LMDB since the actual write() syscalls are already asynchronous. People need to learn to look past the new shiny toys and understand how things really work.

This Open Source Mobile Comm project appears to be an open source impl of a 3G network's backend software. But they're not using the standard 3GPP protocols, they're using their own home-grown stuff instead.
Looks like a toy, using SQLite3 as its HLR storage. Real 3G/4G networks use LDAP, lots of OpenLDAP in particular because nothing else scales enough, efficiently enough.

My mention of WriteFileGather was because it could have been handy to use it in LMDB, but that function only works for unbuffered writes. Since working with a mapped file meant we must only use buffered writes, that precludes our using WriteFileGather.
Ayende seemed to think "we're not using WriteFileGather, so we should be ok" and completely missed that the actual point was to only use buffered writes. And so his code used unbuffered writes and suffered from data corruptions. Doh.

It references an even older conversation we had on the topic, back in 2013. Unfortunately it looks like Ayende missed my point in 2013, he focused on my mention of WriteFileGather when the salient point was you mustn't use NO_BUFFERING to write to a mapped file.
Doing so renders the pagecache invalid, and file mapping explicitly relies on the pagecache.

But without detailed profiling, there's no reason to expect that this is the end of the story for any of those implementations. When I worked on compressors back in the 1980s I found all kinds of tricks to boost their perf. I suspect I could do the same here.

#BoltDB is a Go rewrite of #LMDB (mostly; it has a lot more limitations). Since 2021 it's had a backdoor that gave remote command access to machines running it.

@nprofile…2mzm SQL is too heavyweight for the simple things most apps need to do with storage. SQLite is no different, spends too much time in parsing & interpreting queries.
Also SQLite has no license at all, it's in the public domain. That actually makes it unusable in some countries that have no legal concept of "public domain".

So, you can continue to create new timelines where certain things you want to avoid get prevented, but that never changes your own history.

@nprofile…jk76 by your logic, any written text is a program, which is nonsense. A program automates a process, in a compact form. This requires, at least, a language with looping constructs. And conditional operators, otherwise loops would always be infinite.
ASCII is a code for representing information. The program that runs in a terminal to display info on a screen is the actual set of instructions.
As Wirth used to say: algorithms + data structures = programs. Don't confuse data with code.

Stop trying to make everything "so easy a child can do it." Some things need to have a higher barrier to entry. Focus on educating people to be smart enough and responsible enough to clear the hurdles.

A lot of user interactions these days are *too* user friendly, and when deployed in the real world you discover that you really need a bit of friction, to prevent things from being too easy. Child-proof packaging on medicines is one example where you purposefully raise difficulty.
