Worked on July Zine addition, while only hopped up on Arizona teas, and it didn't go well, but I finally got there.
I *hate* hate HATE. LET ME TELL YOU HOW MUCH I'VE COME TO HATE [SBCL'S ERROR DIALOG] SINCE I BEGAN TO LIVE.
Totally useless at finding "(0) is not a NUMBER" yes, where did I use cdr instead of cadr? LINE NUMBER? STACK TRACE? NO SUCH NICETY FROM AM.
Anyway, next one is a neat mini-language parsing/eval thing and hopefully shows some nice Lisp problem solving.

Anil is also thin-skinned even for a media person, who are not the most robust species to start with. He takes criticism, jokes, or just insufficient fawning as an offense (see his meltdowns over the spike bracelet). So, yeah, don't be that guy here.
Wil Wheaton normally plays well with others, literally wrote the "don't be a dick" thesis, but some people took offense to his friends and chased him out, too.
Oh well. Still beats hanging out at the Nazi bar.

It's like "walking simulator", a derogatory term that got accepted by the community. Starbucks sells a *LOT* of Americanos.
People who do have cast-iron stomachs can treat espresso as "drip but better".
Note espresso machines didn't really catch on in the US until late '80s, early '90s. A friend got his early, & made over half a thermos. Drank it at the pool, went into shock & had to get his stomach pumped.

Cold brew coffee: Very good, much too slow a process for my junkie ass.
We don't say "long black" that's just a double Americano. I'm not a fan of the Americano type, straight-up espresso without milk bothers my stomach. I either have a strong drip, French press/pour-over, or if I'm out I'll get a latte or cappucino.

I have complaints about his lack of useful work this millennium, but Chris Crawford's "De Re Atari" was an *amazing* work in the '80s. It advocates a "tunnel thru rock" design theory, where there is no choice but moving forward to success. A good program isn't "maybe you can just wander around & fiddle with things", instead all the standard tasks are addressed & solved consistently.

Consider ed, the standard text editor. It has two configuration options, p to set prompt (pure vanity), H to toggle "helpful" error messages (in the implausible case you don't know what you did wrong). It's as close to perfect as any interactive program has ever been.
emacs doesn't know what it is, it's a bad editor wrapped in an interpreter that doesn't support standard OS features. It fails the secretaries & the programmers who would be better served with ed & CL.

But it's simply not true. Linux kernel's accepting slop & rust. Wayland is still & likely forever to be worse than X11 (at the job to be done: building & running applications, sometimes remotely). Systemd is slop & spyware now. Even aside from Linux's traditional incompetences, it's worse than a year ago.

Well, this is why I don't work for anyone, and just fart around. Nobody can demand my KPI or burndown charts or whatever now. So when I need code a second time, I put it in a library.
For a while, the write-less-code people were winning, we had "4GL" and nice scripting languages over rigorous libraries.

Substitute your native language for "English" there (this being a post in English, I tend to assume either native or hard-won skill in that language), tho my least bad non-English language training started in grade school & was on Sesame Street before that.

Emacs is a *gigantic* tower of stuff added for specific environments, many of which are now extinct, over 40-some years. You can think a lot smaller (Unix & Scheme philosophy) and get somewhere faster.

When I run RoleMaster, I'm generous with time initially, but I expect players to learn. I've timed it, with a competent group a dozen-ish sessions in, a round's actions take 45-60 seconds. IN RM. In baby-mode games like D&D, a round should be <15 seconds.

Altho, Apple has a very good point that bash should be dead dead dead, use zsh or a dead badger or literally anything except bash post Shellshock.
dash should work safely on anything from MacOS, BSD, Linux in the last 25 years, but may be difficult to clean out the bash-isms in your scripts, I know I had to start fresh with zsh.

Oh, he admitted to it, and it was popular (well, sorta; translations beyond OG Russian, Czech, & French were hard to get for a while) in socialist circles. Orwell accused Aldous Huxley of also copying bits from him, but Huxley denied it; I *kinda* don't believe him, BNW is very much more a capitalist dystopia than socialist.
All of them have bits from earlier utopian/dystopian books, but Zamyatin put it all together in one machine state.

I much prefer Yevgeny Zamyatin's "We", which Orwell at least openly ripped off. Zamyatin was "allowed" by Stalin to leave instead of going into a gulag for writing it, but it destroyed him.

There's a fun but weird Scheme book, Simply Scheme, which rebuilds the LOGO strings/lists in Scheme, then teaches with those.
And I used the same string/list thing in my Aspic mini-language, tho it's a little more traditional LISP (but again, not CL).

There is piracy when you publish, I knew of Chinese & Russian copies of some of my commercial games, dunno if it was just "warez" or getting around Great Firewall.
In dev, you do sometimes get knockoffs but not often. A text adventure is hard to write, easy to steal the text of, but why? There's no money in it, and it's so personal a work. Graphics can be "worth" copying, but that's mostly from big guys like Nintendo, Sony, or SquEnix.

It's not incomprehensible. They released a packaged, obfuscated binary of a game. Mojang didn't want or intend anyone to mod it.
10+ years later, they made command blocks useful enough that you can pain-in-the-ass write something like a program, but they still don't want you to make mods.

This is one of the main reasons I switched over to Luanti (Minetest). Everything, *everything*, is scripted. In Lua, but it's just text files in a dir. Hack on anything you want, reload. No compile or IDE.

I don't see any reason to be so selfish. If I'm releasing something, I want people to use it, not go "well, now I'm stuck".
This is so obvious it's redundant to even have to say: CORPOS DO NOT CARE about your license. If they want to steal your stuff, they will. They just won't tell you. They'll edit the license. Or use LLM to "vibe code" it into their thing. In the incredibly unlikely case you even know, and sue, they'll crush you before reaching court.

Readline being under GPL doesn't stop some giant predator, it just annoys the little guy who wants text history without having to rewrite a giant awful curses thing. RMS is the predator here (as in other things).
And it's not new that GPL is useless, the whole v2/v3 thing was because Tivo realized they didn't have to ship their source if you can't compile & run it.

Corpos already steal copyrighted text & code with LLMs, they don't care about the license at all.
BSD isn't to protect my code from ever being used by a corpo, which I know can't be stopped. It's to make it convenient for other people to use. I care about the teams of ONE or TWO who want something.

I really love this film, it's just every obsession of King's in one place, even more than Tommyknockers (which is a much worse book & film). Sober King is probably a lot healthier but he's less fun.

Web dev protip:
console.log("foo: ", p);
displays p in console as a live object. If it updates, every console entry of it updates.
console.log("foo: "+JSON.stringify(p) );
dumps the current state to console so you can figure out what changed over time.
In related news, my little BASIC parser now parses at least a couple tokens correctly (the colon lines are parsed tokens)
