Simon Reynolds, one of my favourite authors, on blogging in the 2000s. He still blogs to this day, unusually running multiple Blogspot sites, one for each book and/or genre he writes about. I subscribe to all of them in my Feedbin / NetNewsWire setup, and dip in from time to time. Also some other music bloggers, especially of the esoteric variety. Alas, tech bloggers aren’t as active these days…or as interesting, tbh. I like that early 2000s energy of the mp3 bloggers.

This weekend I began #blogging again like it was 2003. Leaflet, which is an AT Protocol product, reminds me a lot of Radio Userland in 2003 (when I started ReadWriteWeb). It has an informal quality and it encourages community inter-linking. I also like that it's integrated with Bluesky, so comments and even trackbacks are potentially much easier than e.g. using Webmentions with Mastodon. I want ActivityPub to go this direction, too. Apparently it’s 20 years since Jack Dorsey sent the first tweet. On that same day, 21 March 2006, I was blathering on about “microcontent design” on ReadWriteWeb. @nprofile…sxvw Yes, there is absolutely a disconnect here between the “copyleft” crowd and AI. I think the copyleft proponents, which btw is a massive and powerful faction on both Mastodon and Bluesky, tend to argue against AI on the grounds that it is slop. They ignore the potential value in AI. Whereas I am much more aligned with Ishiguro’s stance that creators of all kind have a right to own their content and seek some kind of permission and compensation structure from AI companies.

The personal abuse being directed at Bluesky’s CEO is deeply uncomfortable to read. Call me old fashioned, but it is never acceptable. I especially hate seeing that stuff from anonymous accounts that have cartoon avatars. It’s ok to debate the technical merits or otherwise of moderation, but not ok to throw personal insults around. I always block that kind of thing, in part because I think personal insults are cowardly.

I'm curious what the W3C means by "re-engage" and "new audiences" here: "We have refreshed our logo to reflect the new type of organization we have become — an organization that wants to re-engage with our community, and reach new audiences."

I’ve been re-watching this last couple of nights. Triumph of the Nerds, tv show from 1996 by Robert X Cringley. I also loved his book, Accidental Empires, on which the tv series is based. Such good production and he speaks to all the main players (Gates, Jobs, Woz, et al). I also discovered recently (via Wikipedia) that Cringely was a stage name, which I hadn’t realized before. I just checked my latest Google Search Console report for Cybercultural. Couple of notable trends, that I think apply to other indie websites too:
1. Google has totally turned off Google Discover traffic for my site over the past 3 months. I never got big traffic from it, but at least my posts had a chance before. I suspect Google's algo has pivoted Discover traffic to larger sites, to keep them quiet.
2. Clicks per impression 0.50% (was 2.25% at peak). This is AI Overviews/Mode at play #SEO

So much for the "put your link in the comments" hack that LinkedIn perpetuates. I'm not sure what's worse: the throttled distribution (277 views, yet I have >500 connections and supposedly 3,300 followers); OR the pitiful 24 views on the 'link in comments'.

I disagree with the whole premise of this article (which btw is far too long — it’s clearly been written for machines). “But the web isn’t human-first anymore,” he writes. WRONG. That’s what big tech wants you to believe. My websites are written for humans. Ok, I accept I need to figure out how to make a living from that in this AI era…but the Web is human-first for me, and always will be. That’s non-negotiable.

If by “hard tech” they mean “hard to stomach”, that would be more accurate. @nprofile…q54u I’m about 75% of my way through this book and it is very good…and challenging! I will say it’s pretty obvious why it hasn’t got much reception: he absolutely pillories some of the most influential voices on Bluesky and Mastodon. He was a contrary thinker who cut against the grain of accepted internet wisdom. I’m still forming my opinions on this, but I admire his independent thinking.

Oh no…now Meta is automatically sharing our private messages to its AI. As far as I can tell, you can only turn it off for each message thread, one at a time (and there seems to be no option to turn it off *at all* for group threads!). Yet another privacy disaster from Facebook.
I use Messenger btw for family and non-tech friends, so don’t (ahem) shoot the messenger.

One of the ways to get Mastodon more visibility across the normieverse is to add your link to @nprofile…kq0m. e.g. I requested that one of my Mastodon posts about the OpenAI browser news be added (I thought it added good context) and within a minute or two it was up there. It's a small way to promote the fediverse, but it helps when people see more Mastodon (or indeed indie blog) links on Techmeme. Started reading this tonight. An intriguing book…and challenging to some of my own beliefs about digital technology. He also is very critical of some well-known left-wing media figures prominent in the fediverse and Bluesky (I won’t name names, but you can guess). Too early to say whether I will subscribe to his theories, but I admire his contrarian take on tech. He died in 2023.

I think we’re starting to see a breakdown of trust in some of the larger players in the open social web. Many of you didn’t trust Meta from the start about Threads; I gave them the benefit of the doubt, but it’s 100% clear to me now that Meta is not serious about federation. Likewise we see Automattic now backtracking on its promise to federate Tumblr. Perhaps this is all a sign that we need new products and new open source leaders, to add to e.g. Mastodon & Pixelfed. And new business models!

This definitely resonates with me. Sometimes I wonder why I bother spending so much of my time writing articles that fewer and fewer people read. Yes, AI is to blame, altho I also put a lot of blame on ‘traffic-throttling’ social media like X, LinkedIn, Facebook/Threads. The open web is, sadly, almost devoid of incentives for creators. This is a challenge for fediverse too.

Threads is allegedly part of the fediverse, yet I'm nowhere near the point of being able to ask Threads users to follow my Mastodon profile. Attached is how my Mastodon profile looks over there. Some of the issues:
1. Threads users can follow Mastodon Me *only if* they themselves have turned on fediverse sharing (an arbitrary hurdle).
2. They have to exactly type my Mastodon handle.
3. You can like but not reply.
4. "Some posts may not be visible" (why?!)
5. There's no bio!
Any other hurdles?

The web is not thriving for indie publishers. We can only hope Google doesn’t lose sight of small indie websites, and how *they* can earn a living in the AI era. That was the beauty of the Web 2.0 era — there were opportunities for *everyone* to thrive. I see Google, AI companies and big publishers like Reddit thriving in this era…but surely Google knows that isn’t enough for the broader web ecosystem to thrive.

I actually like that cultural folks (musicians, magazines, writers, music bloggers, artists, etc) are starting to show up on Bluesky now. I remember checking last year if Electronic Sound magazine was on open social, but at the time they were just on X. So this is progress. I don’t expect them to ever be on Mastodon, but that’s ok…different open social media platforms can have different vibes; indeed I think that’s better. Updated my Tumblr (velvetsfan.com) for the first time in months…was listening to some music and wanted to post about it somewhere. I miss soup.io, which was a smaller, quirkier version of Tumblr, and where I used to post artsy-fartsy stuff that didn’t fit into my tech blogging world. I watched Mountainhead over the past 2 nights (couldn’t get through it in one night, it made me too anxious!). It was ok entertainment in the end, but a bit too over-the-top for my liking. Of course you recognize the All-In Podcast crew, Musk, Altman and the rest of that lot in the 4 main characters. Maybe too close to the bone for many of us who work in tech? I enjoyed Succession a lot more, because it didn’t try so hard to be a parody. It kind of felt like sitting thru an All-In episode.
