A security audit of Rust Coreutils found 70 CVEs. 44 of these could be fixed for release 0.8. The rest remain unfixed and undisclosed for now.
Ubuntu 26.04 LTS has added Rust Coreutils EXCEPT the cp, mv, and rm commands.
I assume most of the remaining 26 CVEs are therefore in cp, mv and rm.

AIs have been finding bugs and vulnerabilities in #curl for some time.
Is it work to fix those? Yes.
Has someone paid for this? Partially (wolfSSL and @npub1yng…nhrk)
Are the AIs annoying? Yes, very.
Could humans find the same bugs? Yes, if they‘d somehow avoid being bored to death through it.
Was there something „heartbleed“ like? No.
Were there lots of C mistakes? No, logic bugs mostly.
Do AIs run out of steam? Yes. After a while a model stops finding things. Findings differ per model.

AI business models could work if Moore‘s Law still held. But it no longer does.
Token costs are not going down. Worse, answers use more of them to become better, in order to convince people it is all worth it.
The latest model burns so much money that Anthropic is unwilling to let people use it (yet wants to boast).
There is no cost-equivalent replacement for brains. So far, maybe never. Evolution is hard to beat.
Which is where you can feel good about yourself!🤗

The security reporting situation that I see at the ASF and in #curl is
- huge increase in reports
- increase of valid reports
- appearance of duplicate/triplicate reports of the same issue by different people
A high profile project needs to deal with 2-4 new reports each day. This is nuts.
One *may* hope this to go down again later this year bc
- unhallucinated issues are finite (see the fuzzing wave)
- eventually it will cost real money to generate these reports

#curl 8.19.0, released today, has my reimplementation of rate limits for up- and downloads. They work the same for all network protocols and HTTP versions, and per URL, even on shared connections.
Meaning you can mix different limits (including unlimited) on the same HTTP/2 connection.
(This was not a goal as such, mainly a side effect of doing things properly. „Technical Credit“ I would call it. 😌)

In #curl we see good in code reviews by LLMs. But they generate a flood initially. There are issues they can find and others they are blind to
New is that they find discrepancies between comments and code. In something as old and alive as #curl this is very useful. No other tool can do that.
But we get access for free, having a brand. These are not cheap. And we could not pay for them, so…
AI economics are nuts. Bananas.

Working on new thread pools for #curl to rework the async DNS resolving. This will be useful for performance and resource control, as well as improved happy eyeballing.
This all because simply calling ‚getaddrinfo‘ is not good enough and replacements like c-ares are never 100% compatible to all the quirks that exist „below“ getaddrinfo.

Interesting, would love to have been there.
When physicsists argue against determinism because it would destroy free will, I find that not convincing. That seems to require a soul independant of the universe at which point one has left physics and science.
One can have a good time speculating about such things (cocktails help), as evidence and proofs no longer apply. But knowledge is not gained by it.💁🏻‍♂️

Even in a fully deterministic universe you are unique and a fully exact copy of all your quantum states would have to occupy the same place to be an exact copy. We interact with everything around us.
So, you are unique and only you do what you do. And it cannot be predicted from inside this universe. Detrminism does not mean their is a shortcut to finding out what you do next.

the shaping works by configuring "n bytes per second" and #libcurl tries to never exceed that.
If by "unstable" you mean it might become lower for a while, the next #libcurl release will continue to keep the rate and not go above due to accumulated "credit".

When you‘re low on RAM, I recommend using a recent #curl for your internet transfers.
It can shuffle gigabytes back and forth using a few MB of your memory (mostly used by openssl).
If you develop an application, you can use #libcurl to gain its benefits.
Need to shape your traffic? For example bc you run a streaming service? #libcurl does that for you for all HTTP versions.

The Cloudflare outage was caused by a Rust ‚.unwrap()‘ panic, undistinguishable to the non-connoisseur from a segfault.

The effective difference between segfault and unwrap is that the former would have caused a wave of unbearable Rust smugness in my timeline.

‚classic‘: 90 days, all as before
‚tlsserver‘: 90 days, smaller certs, cut lean for its server role and modern clients
‚shortlived‘: ~6 days, otherwise like ‚tlsserver‘
If you have no idea what the mentioned TLS extensions are about, do *not* configure a profile. But if you do, use classic.
If you have a rough idea and serve modern clients, tlsserver cuts some bytes and the auth process is tighter.

POSIX time, generally described as „Seconds since 1970-01-01“ is not really that. Time is a very messy thing by itself (you need magic to make GPS work) and dates do not make it easier.
The POSIX EPOCH *makes* something very complex seemingly simple to use. It‘s a good design with careful tradeoffs by very smart people.

LE is s very small group who set out to improve the terrible CA situation and the fucking middle box corruptions.
They did that successfully with a budget that a medium sized city spends on its department for car license plates.

Lets Encrypt will disable OCSP about 6 months after Microsoft Root program allows it to (the browsers have already okayed it).
This all could be over in a year, year and a half. If you need OCSP for your business, you need to investigate alternatives NOW - which are all proprietary.
Apache ACME will handle this change just fine. Stapling will of course no longer be provided to clients.

I like writing code. It‘s a pleasure at the cost of testing, documenting, user support and debugging.
Let‘s say 1 part joy and 3 parts meh.
If your AI really would make me twice as fast at coding, it would shift the joy ratio to 1 in 6.
And if you AI writes more bugs than me, it could easily become 1 in 12 or worse.

Mastodon devs get a lot of flak these days for not solving the problems people have with abusers.
Don‘t do that to an OSS project and the people working on it. They are not obliged to solve your problems. They might want to, but are restricted to do so. In time, money, skill or depth of understanding.
Calling these devs racist for not solving the problem with racism is deeply unfair.
