Recent home network upgrades and rack tidy up. Over the last few months I’ve replaced the switches I originally had in this rack with some new Ubiquiti UniFi switches. There is also a PoE switch in another room running some new UniFi WiFi 7 access points.
I also added UniFi Protect as an upgraded NVR for some cameras at the front of the house. They aren’t Ubiquiti cameras so I added UniFi AI Ports to get motion and object detection functionality. These are a little expensive but still cheaper than replacing the cameras. It works well and was pretty straightforward to set up.
I had never really been a fan of Ubiquiti equipment in the past but their current range of products had the ports and features I was looking for and, unlike some other brand products, they don’t rely on cloud management. Overall I’m pretty happy with it so far.

I miss ICQ but that is probably just because it reminds me of a simpler time on the Internet!
While I’ve generally been pretty quick to embrace new technologies all through my life, I’ve been struggling to be excited about AI. I think there are some interesting applications but I personally haven’t found anything life changing.
I’ve tried to use it to help with some tasks for work with very mixed results. I needed to build a BOM for some new Cisco routers that we needed to order recently so and I thought I would test it out for that application. At first it looked like it had done well until I started double checking against the ordering guide and found that the SKUs it gave me didn’t actually exist and the routers were end of life anyway. It wasted my time rather than being helpful.

I gave up on Twitter/X a couple of years ago. I tried posting for a while but never gained many real followers or got much interaction with my posts. Instagram has been pretty much the same for me too. While I’ve been a bit quiet recently, Nostr is still the only place I feel is worth spending time on.

I didn’t get quite as far as Streaky Bay but there is so much great coastline there. Sadly some of the fishing is apparently not as good at the moment with the algal bloom we have here although I don’t think those areas have been affected anywhere near as badly as the suburban beaches.

Yeah that is pretty much how I look at things too. I’m working from home full time again since the company closed the Adelaide office last year so using it 8 hours a day for work plus my own use after work and on weekends so it makes sense to buy something decent. I also like the fact that the switches etc are easily user replaceable on this keyboard so it doesn’t have to be thrown out if one fails.

New toy. After using a fairly cheap Logitech keyboard for a few years I decided it was time to upgrade to something better. I was initially looking at getting the Logitech MX Mechanical but I don’t like the fact that an account is required to use some of the customisation features in their software so decided to try a Keychron keyboard instead.
I’ve been using it for a couple of days now. It has taken a little bit of time to get used to the feel of the mechanical switches coming from the old cheap keyboard but so far I’m happy. I don’t use it for gaming so I’m not sure what it is like for that but the general typing experience is much better.
