Tips for navigating in the United States without GPS:<li>If an interstate has an odd number (e.g. I-81), it's mostly or entirely a north-south route. If it has an even number (e.g. I-84), it's east-west.</li><li>If it's a two-digit number ending in a zero or five, it's a cross-country route (e.g I-90 runs from Boston, MA to Seattle, WA, and I-95 runs from the Maine-Canada border to Miami, FL).</li><li>The numbers generally increase from south to north (I-10 is south of I-40), and from west to east (I-85 is west of I-95).</li><li>If the number is three digits (instead of two) and begins with an even number (e.g. I-294 in Chicago, IL or I-495 in Boston, MA), it's a beltway (around a city).</li><li>If the number is three digits and begins with an odd number (e.g. I-581 in Roanoke, VA or I-384 in Hartford, CT), it's a spur (into a city).</li><li>Interstate exits are generally (but not always) numbered based on their mile marker - so, for example, if you know you're looking for Exit 58 and you just passed Exit 46, you know you've got about 12 miles to go until your exit.</li><li>Mile markers are also useful for knowing how far you are from the state line, since they reset at the western or southern border of where the interstate crosses the state line. Now, all of that applies to interstate highways specifically. The US Route system has a different numbering system that I'm not as familiar with, and each state also has its own state route system. This is why it's a good idea to look at a map before you take your trip so that you know which major roads you're going to be on, and don't underestimate the usefulness of keeping an up-to-date road atlas in the back seat of your car.
If you're British and visiting America, one way to think about our national highway system is that US Routes (marked by a white shield with black letters) are roughly the equivalent of your "A" roads, while Interstate Highways (marked by a blue-and-red shield with white letters) are more like your "M" roads. It's not an exact 1-to-1 comparison, but it's close. Bear in mind that each state also has its own road system, so numbered roads that are marked by other signs (they look different in every state) are usually state routes or sometimes even county roads, if you're in an especially rural area.
None of this is anything against GPS or Google Maps or anything like that - they're fantastic tools and I'm super glad that they exist, because they add a really great layer of convenience to taking trips (especially to unfamiliar places). I just know so many people who would be absolutely lost and helpless *without* those tools, and it doesn't have to be that way. We navigated in our road trips without real-time location data for a hundred years before that stuff was available, and our roads were built around finding our way without those modern conveniences - it's really good to know how to get around if, for whatever reason, you don't have access to live maps!

I agree *to an extent,* but I am one who very much believes that all literature is worthy of analysis and examination, and *not just* for a "look at how awful this aspect of our culture is" perspective.
I think it's a mistake to take a work of literature and say "this needs to be relegated to the dustbin of history" as if its problematic elements make it completely unfit for consumption, because the truth is that doing that really paves the way to purity-testing literature and having to make sure everything we read/watch/hear is squeaky-clean and unproblematic. There is *value* in Harry Potter beyond merely examining its problems. The most problematic literature you can think of is not monolithic in its awfulness.
None of that is me sticking up for JKR or for people who still play into the hype of it! Fuck JKR and fuck anyone who still can't detach themselves from Harry Potter. But for me, that has nothing to do with the literature itself and everything to do with the fact that contributing to that hype (even if not with money!) directly contributes to the material harm that the author is doing. It's inarguable that Harry Potter is a historically significant work of literature, but the problem is that its history isn't finished being written yet.

What I will say re. the CSP subscription is that it can be worth it - it's not super expensive (like $25-30 a year unless you need the EX version, which most people don't), and given the fact that they're basically releasing a new version every year anyway (it feels like we got v.4 less than 8 months ago and now we're already getting v.5), it almost works out cheaper to just get the subscription at this point (assuming you want to stay on the latest version, which I guess some people don't care about).

Don't get me wrong - Krita is great software (and getting better all the time), and I do take time to play around with it from time to time. But CSP has a lot of features that... I *could* live without them, but the annoyance of having to live without them kind of still outweighs the annoyance of having to use Windows for me lol

Looks like two of Bsky's content hosts are currently down (unfortunately including the one where my main account is located). So there's this weird thing where some accounts can get in just fine, but anyone on morel.east-us and oyster.east-us can't load the site right now.
More annoyingly, this isn't based on where *you* are located - it's based on where your account was created/where it paths through. So tunneling doesn't help you. My alt account (merakburr.ursamajorartworks.com) works just fine, but my main account (aliothfox.ursamajorartworks.com) doesn't. EVEN MORE infuriatingly, I am still able to get *notifications* from my main account, but I can't actually connect to read/clear them.
It's been down now for about 90 minutes, which is longer than their usual outages (which often last only a few minutes or a few seconds), but hopefully they get things running again soon.

Please note: some of you may see sticker thumbnails rendered incorrectly in your sticker packs (with a white background instead of transparent like it should be). I'm not sure what has caused this, but it seems to be an issue with Telegram's sticker bot. I've double-checked files and everything looks correct on my end. The issue seemed to happen mainly with people who have been supporters for a while and have large sticker packs. I tested sending the stickers, and even though the thumbnails don't show up correctly in the pack, the stickers themselves seem to work just fine, so there's no reason for concern as far as I can tell. My honest opinion is that there are a LOT of people on all sides of the Fur Affinity debate who are kind of... expecting and/or hoping for it to be something that it is never going to be. (I think you already know this but full disclosure in case you don't: I was involved in working with the FA admins during the whole rule 2.7 kerfuffle to help them figure out where the site needed to go.) I made connections in that little "workshop group," and I still talk fairly regularly with Sciggles and the others who were part of that.
In some ways, I don't really see Fur Affinity being that much different from, say, a furry-centric Mastodon instance. Yes, the moderation is "centralized," but in isolation, so is the moderation of any Fedi instance. And I realize that the "in isolation" is carrying a lot of weight there, but the point still stands. It's very like a Fedi instance in the sense that at its core, it's run primarily by one extremely tired person with limited resources and a well-meaning staff who are doing the best they can (the ones who were causing most of the problems all just kinda skedaddled).
AT SOME POINT, whenever you post on any kind of social site (which, from reading your other replies to this, you clearly consider FA to fit that definition), no matter how well it is organized or moderated, you do have to accept some degree of "I trust the judgment of the people who moderate this forum." What I say of Fur Affinity is the same thing I'd say of any of the four other sites (Cubhub, Bsky, Weasyl, Telegram) where I regularly post my art: it so far serves its stated functions well enough to continue posting art there, but I don't trust its *continued* ability to do that enough to not be diversified. There's staff turnover, there's changing moderator attitudes, there's resource adjustments, there's unexpected expenses, there's the turbulent regulatory landscape... those things affect most websites, not just FA. And any one of those things could alter it to a point of being no longer viable, at any time.
For myself, aside from the times last year when I was butting heads with Sciggles (who, afterwards, was extremely conciliatory towards me after she recognized the problems her staff was creating), I have never had any negative interactions with FA's moderation, for what it's worth. That's not to dismiss the others who obviously *have* had those negative interactions, but for my part, I've been on FA since 2011 and haven't had major issues, despite being a somewhat visible ABDL artist who does draw mature/adult themes in my ABDL work.
But circling back around to my original point, there are a lot of people who want/expect FA to be something it's not ever going to be: it's never going to be open-source. It's never going to be community-owned. It's never going to be some magnanimous "this site is yours, and I am just its caretaker" thing that a lot of furries want it to be. Sorry, but it's just not. It's never going to be modernized to microblog/social media "timeline" standards, because that is not what the site owner wants it to be, and it's her website.
Now, having said all of that, it's ALSO not going to be a relic that gets left behind from the modern internet. A lot of the major barriers that have prevented them from getting updates done have been coming down. They're deep into tackling their infamous code debt. They've probably pushed out more substantive updates in the last six months than we saw in the previous six years - and to be perfectly frank, Sciggles deserves a lot of credit for making that happen. Since the 2.7 fiasco, she has learned a LOT and has done a really good job at keeping her head out of the *noise* and just getting shit done. She's been listening to the community; they've been allowing comments on their site announcement journals, and the staff has been *engaging with those comments regularly*.
So obviously, by my own personal reckoning, that earns them enough good will for me to give their new leadership a fair chance. As for the social aspect, it's just like the Fediverse: you will get out of it what you put into it. That doesn't necessarily mean posting a bunch of journals and art, but it DOES mean engaging with people on the site. Do you WATCH artists? Do you favorite their art? Do you comment on their art? Do you comment on journals? Do you get involved in conversations on FA? Because they absolutely do happen.
Whether that's something you want to involve yourself in or not is your call. Really, "should I go back to FA" depends on what you want/expect to get out of it. But if you're *purely* asking "Should I give the admin of FA another chance to be fair-minded?" then the answer is absolutely yes. My own personal involvement aside, the proof is in the improvements to the website (including its moderation).

Finally figured out how to get the subdomain of my Bluesky profile name ('aliothfox.ursamajorartworks.com') to redirect straight to my Bsky profile. I thought that was something that just happened automatically, but apparently you have to add a CNAME (pointing to 'redirect.bsky.app') to your DNS records.
I'm not a webmaster and most of this is shit I'm trying to figure out as I go. I really wish I had the money to pay someone to take care of that kind of thing for me. (But I like to post solutions when I find them because I'm sure I'm not the only one with that struggle.)

The thing is, I actually do like both Bsky and the Fediverse. They're *both* good platforms, and they would both be a lot better if their users didn't constantly get into pissing contests. It's a little bit irritating because the Fediverse is really good, but Fediverse evangelists are *insufferable*.
Like... the Fediverse isn't all that complicated as long as you know where to sign up (just point people directly to an instance you think they'll click with instead of telling them "get onto Mastodon"), but you quickly encounter a lot of things in the Fediverse culture that a lot of average people just will not ever vibe with, and sometimes it does feel a bit like walking on eggshells as to what is culturally acceptable in the Fediverse and what isn't.
Combine that with the fact that there is absolutely NOTHING in the way of discoverability tools beyond hashtags and the Federated timeline (which nobody ever uses), and it's not really any wonder that people are going to bsky instead. Artists and other creators are gonna go where they can gain an audience with the least amount of time possible spent building it. We can lament all day why Bsky is destined to fail, why it will inevitably go the same way as Twitter and the rest, and so forth - but the Fediverse, in its current form and culture, can unfortunately not compete with Bsky, because Bsky has tools and options that Fedi simply doesn't have. Starter packs, labelers, all that good stuff - it's really good for reach, and the Fediverse doesn't have anything comparable.
Combine *that* with the fact that so many people in the Fediverse constantly act like they're high and mighty and far more "enlightened" than the unwashed corporation-worshipping peasants who use Twitter and Facebook and Bluesky, it really isn't any surprise that it's losing the battle for gathering in the spurned Twitter refugees. And I've seen people say stuff like "Well, we don't need those people here anyway" and so forth, which like... fine, but don't then grouse when people call you "elitist," because that's exactly what elitism looks like.
I'm not even saying I don't like the Fediverse - I do. I like it a lot. There are a lot of things about it that I like *better than* Bluesky. What annoys me about it is that the Fediverse culture is just steeped in people thinking that what they have is perfect because it's free from corporate influence, and that they have absolutely nothing they can learn from these other sites/apps about why they're more popular.

I'm really frustrated and disappointed with the way some people - including people who should absolutely know better - have acted about the Furaffinity situation over the past couple of days, not gonna lie.
I want to preface this by saying that if you've lost faith in FA after everything, that is *perfectly reasonable*. I'm not shaming anyone for wanting to leave, or for not giving them a second chance, or for not being hopeful. Those are completely rational responses to all of this.
What upsets me is the way the goalposts keep moving. "We won't trust FA unless Luffy's gone." Luffy's gone. "We won't trust FA unless they apologize." They apologized (without reservation, recognizing a lot of the specific harms, and committing to doing better - it was not a "nonpology," and if you read it like one, you really need to get your head on straight). "We won't trust FA unless they unban people." They've unbanned people. "We won't trust FA unless ..." and the goalposts keep moving. People are so far getting *basically* everything they've been asking for and, yeah, maybe it's not enough, but it's astonishing to me that after seeing the way things have been moving, there are still so many people who don't think FA's even listening. They definitely are.

They can't fix everything all at once. Sorry, they can't. That's not a free pass for FA; it's the simple truth. There is a lot of shit - even stuff that seems like it should be "easy" to fix - that is going to take time. It's pretty clear (given the mass resignation of the staff) that there's a lot of stuff within the *culture* of FA's staff that had a ton of problems. That did not develop overnight, nor will it be fixed overnight. The fact that they are now even more short-staffed means that there are fewer people to handle even the "simple" things (like unbanning the people who were unfairly banned, or removing strikes, or whatever). If you're upset about that, *apply to be staff*. Mod applications are open. Yes, there's an NDA. You're having to verify identities and deal with personal information; maybe that's not a "good reason" in your judgment for an NDA, but there it is. I understand why people are suspicious of NDAs (especially in FA's case where there's been such a lack of transparency), but the concept of it is not completely absurd here.
Point is, if you're not going to be optimistic or hopeful or helpful, that's fine. That's your choice. It's a valid choice. But if you are going to choose that, stay out of the way of the people who *do* believe things can be better. I said even before - and it's even more true now since the latest announcement - some of y'all really do just feel like you're demanding blood for the blood gods now, and it's very disappointing to see.

There's no reading of FA's AUP that protects you - so much of it is so deliberately vague that mods can effectively just bonk you for anything they don't personally like.

A PSA because some folks apparently need to know this:
CashApp is NOT FOR COMMISSIONS. It has no buyer or seller protections. It has very little in the way of scam prevention. It's not *intended* for business transactions (and in fact, they will ban you if they suspect you are using it for commercial purposes). It's meant to send money between family and friends (e.g. everyone chipping in for pizza at a room party, or paying your share of a con hotel room to the person who has the room).
If you are a commissioner and an artist is insisting that you use CashApp, DO NOT COMMISSION THEM. That is a red flag. (Just like if they tell you "send payment on PayPal as 'friends and family.' Do not do that, ever. Ask for an invoice.)
If you're an artist and you're using CashApp to collect payment, STOP IT.

It was partly that, and partly the fact that Cohost (by design; it was a whole part of the owners' philosophy) had ZERO discoverability tools. Like... we're all happier without the bullshit algorithms, but I still need *some way* to be able to find people to follow and discover things I want to see. Fedi and Bluesky both have ways to do that, and Cohost didn't. The other dealbreaker for me with Cohost was the fact that it had no app or any way at all to give me push notifications.

Hot take from a former teacher: elementary and middle school kids should not have homework. It's different for high school and college, but it still shouldn't be the big thing that it is. If we're pivoting schools to "prepare people for work," we need to prepare them to leave work at work. My view is that for high school and college students, homework should be a thing that is not *assigned* as a requirement, but *provided* as a study aid. "We're not going to go over this in class, but you can use it to study and reinforce if you need it" is a good role for homework.
"But what about essays? You can't have high school and college students writing essays in class, because then you'd have no class time." You absolutely COULD if we weren't ditching full-length semesters for the 8-week and "you need to know this for the standardized test" bullshit. If teachers had time to structure their lesson plans the way they wanted, they would ABSOLUTELY have time to set aside a class day just for essay writing. That's not the fault of the teachers; that's the school system fucking them over because of the capitalist obsession with productivity. If we put homework in the role it was intended to be in - reinforcing concepts rather than simply *producing work,* that would give students agency over their own learning. Most students WANT TO LEARN. They just want to learn on their terms rather than feeling like they have to perform.
Children are curious. They want to know how things work. They want to know how the world works. Every child is a scientist. If the schools focused on harnessing that curiosity rather than constantly trying to suppress and redirect it, there would be no limits to what learning could be. College students also want to learn but a lot of them are only there because they feel like they have to be, because now you can't even get the dreaded "flipping burgers" job without an MBA. The problem isn't the education system - the problem is that the economic model is rotten from top to bottom.
A lot of the problems that we attribute to "the school system" are not failings of the school system in particular, but rather they are failings of the capitalist environment in which the school system is forced to exist. I promise you, most teachers wish that weren't so. Because all that money you're pouring into tuition for college? That crippling debt? We teachers don't see a PENNY of that. I had to buy updated $70+ style manuals out of my own pocket. Guess who it's going to? Pearson. The ones who make the GED and the ACT and all the textbooks and student portals. When everyone else was looking and saying "Oh, AI isn't really going to be a factor in education," I immediately saw "Nope, every college in the country is going to be ALL IN on this bullshit." And I was right. Because the current status quo in education - as everywhere - is quantity over quality. God, this really turned into a rant. Sorry about that - it just... makes me so angry. It's a large part of why I left - because that's where it's going, and I genuinely don't have any hope that it's going to get any better.

The TLDR was that there was a bunch of drama that popped up on other social media sites (primarily Bluesky, though it may have spilled over to Twitter) wherein people were trying to gatekeep who counts as "trans" and, of course, the furries sided en masse with the ones saying "gatekeeping is bad," and it somehow led to furries being called incels. It would be funny if it weren't so pathetic, frankly.

Putting all my SubscribeStar work and all my commission work onto a calendar into blocks of time really does show a pretty good picture of just how much art I actually produce >.>
(Notice, however, that I DO have time scheduled for breaks and lunch. I do everything I can to stick to the schedule I've set for myself.)
