I just cleaned my TWSBI Eco B that is dedicated to shimmer inks. The old ink was Diamine Inkvent Celebration, a red-orange ink with orange shimmer (very pretty!). I was surprised and happy that the particles were fine enough that they never clogged for the whole of the three months they were in that pen, and that it was easy to clean. I just pulled out the nib and feed and rinsed off all extra shimmer. Will check out more in the Inkvent line in the future.

Managed to score another bottle of Pen and Message Cigar from somebody in Fountain Pen Network-Philippines. It's so hard to acquire because Pen and Message limit the number of bottles a person can buy from their shop in Japan, and you have to use a different credit card for each bottle (at least that's what I was told)! It will be shipped to me this weekend. Glad to have a backup bottle of my grail ink.

I am home from volunteering at the Manila Pen Show 2026. The first day was crazy! I think we had 1800 people today! The ballroom was huge and there were like 70+ vendors, and so many people milling about. We volunteers ate lunch late, were powered by coffee, and adrenaline. Now I am worn out, but happy. Yes, I got my Opus 88 Mini Sakura pen, and a couple of Vinta inks. And was gifted a pen wrap. So much fun, but I'm tired and feel my age.

While cleaning my pen box I rediscovered a never-been-inked Jinhao 80 (I had bought it in 3 colors, intending to gift some). I inked it from one of my sample vials, with Birmingham Sandstone. On paper Sandstone reminds me of both J. Herbin Cacao du Bresil and Montblanc Swan Illusion inks. A little pale and a vintage looking grey-brown. Enjoy the Mountain of Ink swatches below:

New Year nerding out on pens: my friend Tim and I are discussing whether Sailor 14k or 21k gold nibs can be fitted into a Jowo size 6 nib unit housing so our other friend Paolo can put it in his Kasama fountain pen. In short, the 14k is too small and the feed dimensions and curvature will not fit. The 21k will possibly fit but the nib curvature is still an issue. What DOES fit is a Platinum 3776 Century 14k nib, with the Jowo feed and housing.

I asked idly about a Sailor Pro Gear Mocha Brown fountain pen. I was so shocked that the price was just under USD 350. The recent round of price increases by Japanese pen brands is too much. I am so glad I got my Sailors when they were still affordable.

Tending to my mother, whose thin skin on the base of the thumb has been bruised and scraped by the handle of her pruning shears. Right now it's been disinfected and plastered. I am thinking of wrapping a thin rubber strip around the handle of the shears for padding.

Ok. So far, in the two weeks I have had all my retractable fountain pens inked,
1. Jinhao 10 EF nib is better than Jinhao 20 EF nib at keeping a seal. My silver stripe Jinhao 10 is writing well while the Jinhao 20 has dried up.
2. Jinhao 20 F nib on the other hand, remains a wet writer. So I suspect nib width has a lot to do with it.
3. Majohn A1 EF nib since the nib transplant has been writing consistently, but on the dry side. Works well with Pilot Iroshizuku inks. 1/n

@npub19t5…qnld Do you have any experience with Van Dieman's ink? There will be a pop-up at one of our stationery stores, Scribe, on May 24. I am still not sure I will be able to go, but in case I cannot, I might ask a friend to get me an ink.

We have a number of very good reasonably-priced Filipino restaurants. I do not know them all, but I can recommend Manam (try their crispy pata and crispy sisig, and watermelon sinigang), and Mesa (similar selections). There is also the classic restaurant Barrio Fiesta. Also try the Romulo Cafe, and Abe restaurant.

More pen community tea: Today I learned that Nakaya has terminated its North America retailer contract with nibs[dot]com. Perhaps this is related to their filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy last year. Right now that leaves Aesthetic Bay in Singapore as the only Nakaya retailer.

I missed getting a slot for the Sailor Ink Blending this year at the Manila Pen Show 2025, but was put on a waiting list. I have been searching for a color I wanted to create/recreate, and I chose a purple close to Lamy Dark Lilac but not exactly the same (I do not want sheen, just a rich purple). So I have found a couple of image pegs below. I will call the ink Hanashobu, after the Japanese iris.

Just came from the barangay office after barangay security viewed our CCTV. Last night someone tried to cut and steal our power lines but our security guard chased them away. Since it was quite dark they couldn't identify the culprit but we are taking steps to prevent people from sneaking in on bicycles (because they can't be heard) at night. By the way this is not the first time an attempt has been made.
