My immediate thoughts go to "I won't use it". It's not clear what the advantage of a flag would be compared to panic-immediate-abort.
Perhaps the flag would be meant as an override, but then I only imagine myself overriding immediate abort someone else set, to be able to handle that in my own code.

I enjoyed #rsync remote file completions for a while, but I upgraded to #Fedora 44 and now it chokes a few directories deep into the path :( I suspect some #bash expert failed on a whitespace inside the directory.

Ah, I see. That sounds like the same concern that made UUIDs.
Thinking more along this way, I've seen intentionally reused ISBNs. I'm guessing that's because it costs something to get a bunch. UUIDs are completely gratis to generate, so there's no such temptation.
So it looks like UUID is superior in this aspect, except it doesn't come with a cental database.
I have a hunch that with crowdsourcing, a central database isn't needed any more, making UUID a viable alternative.

What were the functions for which ISBN was created?
When I came up with the idea, I was thinking that a central database is optional for an identification system. We have Libgen for publications, WikiData for everything, IMDB for movies, and other inofficial ones. I wonder if times have changed since ISBN and a simple identifier could work.
A centralized-knowledge, decentralized-maintenance database could also mean IPFS or blockchain. The latter also could solve financing.

Say hello to my #PCB manufacturing lab. Here is the 3D printer showering the board in purple rays.
In those bottles live the necessary chemicals. Neutralize before disposing!
They go to trays where the board takes a bath. First, a minute in NaOH to develop, then (after a rinse in water), 20min of persulfate to etch away the copper. The big bowl holds warm water.

Nah. They don't do exactly the same thing, but they do a similar thing. While I don't us either, I'm guessing they:
- find software
- resolve dependencies
- set up that software
which looks pretty much like package management to me.
Recently someone made me realize that the horrible github CI pipelines thing is just awful package management software:

I know because on my low-value laptop, I just never click the "restart" button after updates download.
But there's maybe a way to have your cake and eat it too. I recently evaluated OpenSuse MicroOs. There, you can't just install packages to the root file system, but you can into snapshots.
And the cool thing, there seems to be a command to switch to the new OS image at runtime.
I don't exactly know what it does yet, though.

I think that's kind of unavoidable when you want a safe option.
Okay, suppose we can keep using the computer while the updates are running, but then you have to restart it immediately.
Oh no, people are complaining that they don't want to interrupt their work with a restart! Fair enough, let them continue working. But what happens next? They will keep the computer running for ages because why would they restart?
Not restarting ends up an insecure default.

I'm glad you didn't notice any problems. But that didn't mean you were immune from them.
If your kernel has a security vulnerability, and you install an upgrade but don't restart, you're still vulnerable to it until you restart.
Due to how Linux retains files that were once opened, the same counts for applications, including those with network access.
So restarting is the conservative, safe option.
Use unsafe no-restart updates at your own risk (I do).

Well, I used BMI out of my own will. It's an approximation that's easy to calculate with data that's easy to obtain.
All models are wrong, but some are useful, so I don't blame healthcare for using BMI if it's for an initial guess.

checking with Wikipedia gives BMI approximately 21.3, which is right in the normal weight range.
Although BMI is supposedly overestimated for people with a lot of muscle mass, so perhaps there's some underweight effect actually.

I installed MicroOS from an image.

Has everyone noticed?
Here in #Germany almost all #supermarkets use #epaper displays to show prices. They look great. It's hard to notice that it's not ink on dead trees.
That's thousands of displays per shop. Times thousands of shops in the entire country.
Some of those displays break or otherwise get replaced.
So there must be piles of used displays around the country... but where?

So it's back to the same functionality, except with extra complexity, lol.

Are there any descriptions of the attack? Right now the only possible motivation is a second-hand description by codeberg themselves.
It makes me wonder: why did codeberg not explain what they think the rationale was?
Was it because the messages contained abuse?
If I wanted to hide the real reasons or techniques of my attack, would be enough to fill it with abuse and people would purge it before letting the public analyze it?
That sounds like an exploit against moderation.

Yeah, email is complicated. I had some real and some nonsense lapses, like backscatter, sending a dozen emails per year, or being hosted on a residential IP. Maybe not enforcing DMARC counts against me too.
But if you diagnose email problems anyway as a recipient, I don't see a legit reason for this much gatekeeping.

I don't think I care enough.
Schemes like this feel like a protection racket to me: register here and cough up your phone number/browser user agent/location, or else.
I'm not interested in having a Google account, so my emails land in spam.
I feel this is antithetical to the idea of distributed email. But maybe I live in the past and that ship has sailed.
(Can we include proof of work into the protocol to fight spam? Or at least PGP signatures?)

My rule for buying into #technology is:
get the #software separately.
Buy a laptop → install #Linux .
Get a router → flash #openwrt .
Sign up to a messenger → Use an open client.
Browse a #web app → Use an unrelated browser.
Why? The vendor can't resist the control. I don't know why. They make the experience suck. Bloat, ads, locked features, antifeatures, phoning home. Even #OpenSource .
Independent software would not survive if it did that. People would install something else.

Libobscura is a friendly library to use cameras on Linux.

Okay, another comparison:
the 5 minutes pipeline costs 82.6kJ * (300s/1400)s = 82.6kJ * 0.21 = 18kJ (*2 for network=36kJ)
A liter of gas contains 33.6MJ per liter, with car efficiency at 20% it's 6.7MJ, at 3l/100km it's 33.3km, so 200kJ/km.
Every 5m pipeline run costs about as much energy as 200/36=222m by a small car.
How far from the office do you live? How many commits do you push upstream per ride?
We have much better ways to curb energy use than not testing software.

For comparison, boiling a cup of tea needs about 82.6 kJ of energy.
My CI computer has a 60W power supply (so it can't draw more power than that - we're overestimating). The CI would need to run for 82.6kJ/60W ≅ 1400s ≅ 23 min to match it.
Make it half to offset the energy costs of network communication: 11min.
That gives two 5min pipelines for the price of one hot drink.
Would you drink a cup on every other commit if it saved you time and stress in the future?
I probably would.

If your pipeline takes 2 minutes and saves 2 hours in debugging and another 20 in working around the problem at the end user side - which is the case at least for me - then the sweet spot is quite clear.

I call this a ridiculous statement. If running a computer for 5 extra minutes is comparatively so bad, we should reconsider software altogether.
There are many better ways to heat up Earth, related to transportation and manufacturng.

Oh, now I realized: most forges host underpriced runners, so they have a reason to have them run as little as possible.

A piece of criticism to all code forges I know: why not run #CI on all commits?
A bad commit is a liability. It will break bisect and make debugging miserable.
#ForgejoActions takes it to the extreme and cancels an already running action when I push another change.
I get it - it's too slow and expensive to test them all when pipelines take minutes to run. But you could just pause the old ones until the newest one is finished!

Installing #Fedora on a #Surface go 2. For #libobscura, because it has a special #camera setup (IPU3).
Set BIOS to boot from USB stick? Still boots windows.
You have to boot Windows with the stick in and select a special "Linpus Lite" reboot option.
Except if the stick is in while Windows is running, it will get corrupted and fail verification.
And then the installer aborts while formatting 'device is in use'.
#Windows resists being removed → fsck #Microsoft ,.

So I've proved (some of) the concepts:
- API without segfaults
- zero-copy image passing
- GPU accelerated decoding

Working on #libobscura today.
#OpenGL , #EGL , #glium , #glutin , #Rust , #v4l2 .
After 2 weeks of effort, the #GPU decoder COMPILES!
...The screen is green.
But hey, I actually know how to debug this :D It's almost as if 10 years of #debugging and #ReverseEngineering paid off!

I just found a way to let #Firefox use the #KDE file picker instead of the dreadful non-integrated #GNOME one :)
It involves enabling portal support:
In about:config set the key:
widget.use-xdg-desktop-portal.file-picker
to "1".
The "save" button is in the bottom right corner again :)

#Coding #OpenGL for #libobscura right now.
Computers need to convert those #Bayer or YUV #camera streams to RGB quickly to present them!
I'm just converting my old code to #rust, but it was enough to remind me why I hate the OpenGL + #EGL + #GBM combo. APIs with implicit global variables can get lost.
Thankfully, I'm nearly done and can go back to shaders and algorithms :-) but using GLES 1.2 (the #Librem5 can't do anything better ;_; )

Are you compressing the cursor together with the rest of the stream?
Some games have a "harware cursor" option to reduce cursor latency, where it skips the game's rendering pipeline to arrive a few frames early.
Something similar could be helpful for streaming: send cursor position separately from the video stream, render it directly from a saved image without waiting for an entire frame to arrive.

That is, a smart card that people insert at point-of-sale terminals?
The browser extension takes care not just of the secret store, but also of all user interaction. Would there be a need to trust the terminal not to be compromised?
What's the plan for everyday shopping anyway?
