These last few days, I've finally started to work on my big project for @npub1jxd…txs3 3.4, which is our new format, which will trigger auto-update, very quick saves (even for big projects), more maintainable and extendable save/load code, but also much more.
E.g. it will be a basis for our animation support too.
This work has been very smooth so far, which is not surprising since the architecture choices are what make it easier.

I just merged a nice patch by Richard Allen for @npub1jxd…txs3's JPEG import plug-in.
With a recent enough libjpeg-turbo (most used JPEG lib), loading 8-bit JPEG through the 12-bit pipeline brings huge quality benefits.
It comes at the expense of all JPEG being loaded as 16-bit per channel, which means bigger files. Yet the qualitative difference is making this change a no-brainer.
Loading as 8bpc then converting to 16bpc, you already lost data (unlike loading directly as 16bpc).

I just pushed the support for the rotation of the new #Wacom Art Pen 2 🖌️ in #GIMP. This will be available in @npub1jxd…txs3 3.4.
Maybe I will even decide to back port this feature to a 3.2 micro release so that artists 👨‍🎨 with such hardware won't have to wait for months. 🤷

Maintaining software is more than just adding new features. In the last few weeks, I've spent a lot of my time cleaning up code, fixing bugs, deleting outdated code even, and/or simplifying it.
For instance, 2 days ago, I cleaned up old logic for the in-app documentation system in #GIMP:

Still a lot more work to do, before I really start working on my planned features, so that we get a robust GIMP 3.4! 💪

Since yesterday I have been playing with a fun #GIMP code experiment suggested by Aryeom (based on something we had seen years ago though we don't remember where): using accelerator raw data to know the screen orientation and playing with simulated "dripping" digital paint on canvas.
This includes code in GIMP itself of course, as well as in the portal used by GNOME (and other DEs?) to auto-rotate the screen.
This is my first working demo (very simple and buggy; only for demoing at this point).

We released #GIMP 3.2.0 today! Quite an exhausting week with usual last-minute issues!
E.g. the CI infra suddenly failed yesterday! Fortunately admins were prompt to fix as always (still I went to bed at 1AM)!
Then issues in Windows packaging, which testers didn't notice with early test packages (of course, only noticed by someone just after the tagging! 😱).
Yet all in all, first time I end the release around 7PM after having started the release day at 9AM! The procedure gets better! 😄

By the way, I am hopeful we should be able to get this tool out of playground for @npub1jxd…txs3 3.4, very likely together with a rework of the Foreground Selection tool which could become instead a particle selection tool (hair, fur selection, etc.).
I did also spend some time the other day to review current UI and workflow of the Foreground Selection tool, which is really really suboptimal.
Guess I will update the roadmap! 😁

As a side project, to relax from maintenance and preparation of @npub1jxd…txs3 3.2, I have been looking into our experimental "Paint Select" tool.
The tool is still hidden under a Playground settings, mostly for performance reason. I am in early review and experimentation on it, but it feels like we can really improve things, both algorithmically and UX/UI wise.

In 1995, November 11, a young US student, Peter Mattis, announces a program on some Linux newsgroups, called "The GIMP: the General Image Manipulation Program". 2 years later, Spencer Kimball (other co-author) and Peter graduate and leave.
Thanks to the #GPL license, the community take over development.
30 years later… The project is thriving, with contributors from all over the world, and maintainers from Germany, Norway, France, Korea, Netherlands… 🤗

Note 2: I remind very strongly that these are not "promises". They may evolve (adding or removing features!). In fact, they **will** evolve.
We use them for organizational purpose and to give ourselves points of focus.
For others, it gives a global idea of the direction of GIMP development.
But that's only it!
I feel like I need to remind this because every time we share a bit of our organizational thoughts, it's used by some people against the project later on.

Note 1: this work also relies on the work done by the past, by dozens of contributors! For instance, Varun Samaga B L did a lot of very nice work to improve OpenCL support and now @npub1eha…ze52 does a lot of cool work too, so it really feels like OpenCL could re-become a first-class citizen soonish!
That's true for all other projects listed here too!
Never forget that FLOSS is in fact a lot of dwarves standing on each other's shoulders! We don't need no giants standing on people's feet! 😁

With @npub1jxd…txs3 3.2 on the final stretch, today I spent quite some time preparing #GIMP 3.4 and 3.6 initial roadmaps 🗓️ with input of what other contributors want to work on (with the usual assumption that roadmaps are "fluid" and can change anytime; it's a tool for us to self-organize, not a promise to others).
Organizing future works is always a nice feeling as we can see where we are going! 🎯

Today I finally merged one of my 2013 patches for @npub1jxd…txs3! (with improvements of course) 😁
This is a new action to switch to last used tool (defaulting to Shift-X shortcut).
As a side change, I also made so that once an effect has been validated (or canceled), the previously selected tool is activated again.

Anyone using one of the languages where @npub1jxd…txs3 3 crashes lately (Norwegian, Turkish… AFAIK) on Windows, who could test an installer for us?

Note that I am planning to port part of this work to all types of layers eventually though as a last-second merge concept, because destructive layers are still meant to be edited through direct pixel edits.
Yet it should be possible to lessen quality loss even on destructive layers, for the cases when several transformations are done consecutively.
This is work-in-progress.

Another nice ability of link layers is that all consecutive transformations are squashed into a single transformation, which will lead to much smaller quality loss.
For instance, the first image is a standard import then rotated 8 times at 10°. It shows more blurry than the same 8 times 10° rotation on a link layer (which will be as sharp as a single 80° rotation).

A few days ago, we finally merged an early implementation of link layers (layers linking to external files) into @npub1jxd…txs3.
This has various usages, e.g. the ability to work at several people on a same image by linking a separate document (e.g. someone working on backgrounds and another on characters). Or again when working with different software.
For instance, in this example, the layer links a #SVG file. As soon as it is saved in #Inkscape, #GIMP picks up the updated version automatically:

Are there anyone around who uses the "Overwrite" paint mode of Paint.NET (also in Pixelorama; and in Aseprite as "Copy Alpha + Color"…). Apparently a useful mode for pixel art.
Anyone used this in any of these software and would like something in @npub1jxd…txs3 ?

This is a follow-up of my previous toot about the mil vs. thou unit which someone is asking us to add in the default units list of @npub1jxd…txs3.
To be fair, at this point, when I see how people disagree even with the name (and the fact that as a software engineer working animation film industry, nobody here knows this unit, engineers and artists alike!), I just wonder if we should add this unit at all.
I would add a fifth choice "Add both" but Mastodon only accepts up to 4-choice in polls.

Question to people doing electronics and other fields using very small units: do you use the name "thou" or "mil" for the unit representing 1⁄1000 inch?
Considering adding this in unit list in @npub1jxd…txs3. Wikipedia seems to say that Thou is more common globally (but North America) and it looks like @npub1cf7…39az (a good reference!) uses "Thou" too.
Yet a reporter insists that "mil" is more common and that "thou" wouldn't be understood by engineers.
So which is it? 😄

And now the last blocker for @npub1jxd…txs3 RC2 has been merged! 🥳
It's code by @npub1l0n…7t28 for a new "Perceptual" blend space for layer modes (in fact the old "perceptual" blend space was rather a "use image's profile curves" blend space so it was renamed to "RGB (from color space)"). It fixes some layer modes where the algorithm was rather expecting the input to be perceptual.
We are **very** close to a new release candidate! 🎅

Side improvement while working on more important #GIMP code: I implemented history search with Ctrl-R/S (as common in shells) in the Python Console plug-in, because I use it so often to test various libgimp functions that I felt having to hit up/down arrow to find previously run code was too inefficient.
Now I just Ctrl-R <type some part of the function I want> Ctrl-R (as many time as needed to find it back). 😊

So today I kinda finished my branch for a new public filter API in #GIMP 3.0.
We used to have special-case code for specific filters. Now it will be generic code able to apply *any* GEGL operation as a filter in @npub1jxd…txs3, just like the GUI already allows!
Of course, it makes use of the non-destructive filter infrastructure so you can append filters non-destructively or merge them old-school!
Tonight my brain is foggy (too much code). I'll review again and will merge tomorrow. 🥳

Now 98% till @npub1jxd…txs3 3.0 RC1! 🥳 And yesterday in particular a particular huge milestone was passed with the last major API update (though I'm still looking at details in case of forgotten issues in the API)!
You may notice that we are only 1 opened issue down since last screenshot, but that's because a lot of other issues were also fixed (342→365 closed issues). The team is working hard! 💪
