Tempted to write a post that software development lost the plot a long time ago, and that the recent LLM developments are merely the icing on that cake. Software these days is not the painstaking work by people like @npub1cm0…enqe or @npub10ny…582h or @npub1p66…ee02 who write the best code they possibly can. Over the past decade, "the software world" has been developing in a very different way than that.

thing is, if you follow the history of (small) nuclear power, the promise is always that THIS design will be safe, simple, affordable AND run on fuel that we actually have. And it always turns out you can't get all of these at the same time. Molten salt has proven to be VERY tricky for example. By now, you need to be a believer to assume that this time it will work.

Was forced to install the Miele app because it is the only way to tell the washing machine to clean itself. Some people think the US spying programs are well regulated, and would not needlessly target Europeans who are not terrorists. I can recommend reading the linked article on how the US spies on *their own* people using section 702, *without warrants*. Think they'll protect us better?

There is this world where people assume the US government would ask Europeans for permission to spy on them. "Dear Microsoft Luxembourg employee, please allow us to copy the Luxembourg government data". This is of course not how any of this works. Yet people & many journalists weirdly assume it does.

Alarming as it is, the article below is still not alarming enough! Microsoft France here claims they've never seen a CLOUD ACT request for French government data. Perhaps true. However, under the FISA section 702 & EO 12333, Microsoft is still mandated to deliver such data to the NSA, and Europeans will never learn of that request. You get this notice when accessing the NCBI genome server. It always appeared needlessly scary to me, but this warning is starting to look ominous. Also, may have to learn to find the European equivalent server if we have one...

The IT world has convinced us no new software can be deployed outside of US clouds. We're so sure about this that European governments (including the UK) are handing over vital government functions & data to US controlled servers.
