Here’s the short version.
Some entities are exploiting a loophole in Bitcoin’s design. They are not using inscriptions, not using op_return, but instead creating fake pubkeys to store arbitrary data on-chain. It sits in a kind of sweet spot. Not big enough to trigger current filters in Core, but damaging enough to bloat the UTXO set and push out regular node runners.
And somehow the conversation has shifted.
Instead of defending Bitcoin’s core purpose, some dev voices are floating the idea that we should work with the spammers. That maybe if we remove the remaining filters, the abuse will become more manageable.
This is a bizarre and dangerous line of thinking.
Bitcoin was never built to serve as a data dumpster. It was built to be money. Sound, verifiable, scarce. When we start redesigning Bitcoin to appease people who are actively trying to harm it, we lose the very thing that gave it credibility.
Mechanic calls it out plainly. The same people who claim filters do nothing are suddenly demanding we remove them to help the spammers. It is a contradiction. A bait-and-switch. Break the protocol, then use the damage as leverage to weaken it further.
This is not how strong systems survive.
If we bend Bitcoin every time someone finds a way to abuse it, then it is no longer something we can trust. It becomes something we constantly have to defend through negotiation.
I did not opt into Bitcoin to negotiate with attackers.
I opted in because it was resilient. Because it does not ask for permission. Because it stands firm even when pressure mounts.
Mechanic is not just pointing out a technical issue. He is warning us that the cultural drift inside Bitcoin is real. If we let short-term convenience take precedence over long-term integrity, we will get something very different than what we came here for.

If this video doesn't sit well with you, GOOD. It shouldn't. Maybe you can't put your finger on all the reasons why it doesn't. To be fair, John Kerry is a great speaker. He speaks with confidence and concern with statesman stature. However the words he uses need to be decoded. It took me a long time to realize that his (and the class of people that opperate state agencies) vision for governance is actually burdened by the people. Once I figured out that their definitions of words are different than their original meaning everything clicked.
“It is really hard to govern today” = control the minds of the population. Some times you hear the word “populism” and lately it is in a negative light. This because the desire of the state is different than the desire of the people. It is always hard to govern when the state views populism as a threat.
“The referees we used to have to determine what is a fact and what isn't a fact” = state-funded institutions with the ability to change definitions as needed. Their titles are simply referred to as “experts” but note, only the ones that come from institutions that have state and corporate funding.
When elites say "threat to democracy", they’re not talking about a risk to the idea of government “by the people and for the people”. Instead, they’re talking about a threat to the institutions that currently hold power—the ones that have grown comfortable with their authority. These institutions—whether it's the state, media, or big corporations—have not acted in the best interest of the public for a very long time. They are dead set focused on protecting their own power and keeping control, knowing that it doesn’t represent the people.
You are a hindrance to their agenda. Every time you watch a video that is not from an “official news source” or listen to a podcast from someone who’s been canceled and censored, your freedoms are getting in the way of “democracy.” They view your First Amendment as a privilege that will need to be modified once they “win the right to govern”.
As for me, I'm a huge fan of misinformation and disinformation. If the state does not want me to know something then I definitely want to know what it is. Allow me to determine what I choose to believe and what I choose to not believe. The state has been choosing what I was allowed to know for a long time. 12 years of government school growing up. I remember as an adult the first time I realized the state choose a set of “facts” that the population adopted but simply were not true. Remember the food pyramid brought to you through the public schools by the FDA? Binge on carbs, limit meat and eggs (read the book Fiat Food to learn why they said that). That was the first time I realized that my best interest was not in mind by the state and that “facts” are subject to the incentives of the agency that crafted the “fact.”
I recently went to hear Kennedy speak. He said to remember these three rules.
“One: when you give a government a power it will never voluntarily relinquish it.
Two: if you give a government a power, it will ultimately abuse it to the maximum extent possible.
Three: no one ever complied their way out of totalitarianism.”

When we created StackChain Magazine, we noticed that this side of the Bitcoin movement was missing a voice. There was no one dedicated to celebrating Pleb culture.
I present to you StackChain Magazine 2nd Block. This piece is a collaboration of over 20 plebs, all pushing forward in Bitcoin adoption through creativity, writing, art, humor, and ideas.
The most unique aspect of StackChain Magazine is it is not a business. It’s not an organization. There is no C.E.O. It is not motivated by profit. Instead, it’s a passion project.
Who knows how long that can last? Our current decentralized format may need more structure as time passes, but we are not eager to build up. We want to simply create.
Our 3rd Block is already in motion with content already pouring in, and we still have a handful of 1st Block and 2nd Block left. Like Bitcoin and the best art, we felt limiting supply is essential to the work we create. Our current protocol limits each print to only 210 prints. Once they are gone, there will never be any more printed.
Our good friend at Proof of Ink is hosting the magazine sales. It’s truly a Bitcoin-only magazine, as you can only pay with Bitcoin. There is no USD payment option, and we are not looking to add one.

I downloaded a full node but halfway through switched it to a pruned node. I thought I would be clever and just toggle back to full and back fill.
