Some of my favourite recipes are from this era. They can be basic, but changing them up is easy.
Some recipes encourage using what you have. Bread recipes call for "liquid" or "fat", and ypu just used what you had. Far easier to figire.out how to substitute from that.
Community cookbooks have also vanished. Churches, schools, groups all published books for fundraisers. You could get a lot of varied and interesting recipes depending on the background of your group. With the internet why publish? There are easier ways to get money.
Now thrifting yields a lot of more modern cookbooks. Glorious tomes of fancy photos and specific, direct instructions on how you have to make the recipe. The flexibility and confidence to make and modify is gone.

@nprofile…hz68 when we had some extension work done, after all the paperwork was submitted and approved and half the work completed, suddenly a bright spark at the city decided there was actually an error. All work was put on hold for over a month until we could get a survey done to determine the correct property line because apparently no one had known what it actually was prior to approval.

Also old enough to not have consistent insulation throughout the house.
We have blinds and curtains, or two sets of curtains, on the windows right now. I think tomorrow we will also be turning the temperature inside up because the AC has no hope against that.

@nprofile…8g36 we have some mourning doves who .... well, aren't bright. It started with one mum dove leaving her youngling on the bbq by the back door as if humans didn't walk by regularly. He (we assumed for reasons it was a he?) grew up acting like we weren't a threat. We called him Stupid, affectionately of course. His kids/grandkids/great grandkids tried nesting in bad places, dropped their kids out of nests early, got stuck on windowsills... we called them Son of/Grandson of/Descendant of Stupid. They're still coming back 20 years and who knows how many generations later. This year they tried nesting in an eavestrough, which lasted 1 week due to rain. Bless them all. They're dim, but they're our birds and we love them.

Power outage at my house as I left for work, anticipating coming home in the hottest part of the day after working in heat for the morning. The fan at my desk died yesterday, so I don't even have that as they requisition me a new one. I was looking forward to AC this afternoon, but possibly not now.
The power company has no eta on restoring power at the house, but has helpfully labelled this outage as "unplanned".
I don't know why I find this funny. I just do.

Did I just sleep for 13 hours because of working in the heat this week? Or was it from the stress of the deadline I just finished yesterday? Or because, on reflection, I only had 1 cup of coffee yesterday instead of 2?
If I use recent business logic, it absolutely had to be the coffee, as it was the only thing I could personally control and therefore the obvious cause of the problem.

As I potter through a bunch of small but important tasks that I can manage half awake today, I realise that one of the problems with how AI is being pushed is that if you have automated all the small tasks you can't have an off day where you do them yourself. Everything that is left would be big thinking items, and you damn well better be capable of big thinking items for 40 hours a week, every week, or you are screwed.
No idea how to even remotely be that at work. I like my days where I have to dust a robot, or clean up some emails, because it's still work but it's work my brain can handle on an off day.

Some days you think negative thoughts because you want to BBQ and sit on your patio in the nice weather, but rowdy neighbours are having a loud and raucous party.
Then you go inside, shut the windows, draw the curtains, put up several strings of tacky and mismatched battery powered lights, air fry your dinner, and have a lovely and quiet evening indoors with the person you love.
(By you I mean me. And honestly it's tough to be negative when I am surrounded by LED unicorns and flamingoes. Because really. 🦩🦄)

I don't really research shows before I watch them, so I didn't really have a lot of expectations here. However, what I am finding is that this is basically the same show as My ID is Gangnam Beauty. But worse. I really don't find this telling of the story to be all that interesting.Cha Eun Woo is basically playing the same character in both of these shows. But his character in Gangnam Beauty was far more interesting than the one in true beauty. I am debating if I'm going to keep watching or if I'm going to set it aside for now. But unless this improves very quickly, I can't see me enjoying this one at all.

Changyu broke her butchering knife in battle. This episode starts with our Marquis using a forge to mend tha blade.
Ace husband material there, but I digress.
Partner and I are discussing the blacksmithing here. Would a soldier be able to use a forge to repair weaponry? I mean, I can see it being a useful and necessary skill if you have a farm on the edge of nowhere and there isn't anyone who you could go to to have a hoe fixed up for you. But our hero doesn't strike me as the type who wouldn't have a smith nearby to do it for him. And swordsmithing seems like a particularly skilled trade. On top of being an amazing husband, warrior, etc., is it realistic that he would also smith at some level?

Watching while consulting the Wikipedia entry on traditional Chinese timekeeping to figure out the timing of events.
I have seen Korean historical dramas on Viki where the team adds the hours to translarion, so I know that an old Korean hour is roughly two of our hours. I assumed Chinese would be similar. But the exact ke of the hour is continually referenced, and a ke turns out to be roughly a 14 minute period in their hour.
Now I am curious about the Korean drama I watched recently that referred to the time to burn an incense stick, so I am going to go hunt that down whike PeiYi keeps looking for the killer.

I have been having a very negative, stressed, burnt out kind of time lately.
So Partner ordered sushi for dinner and opened a bottle of my favourite soju, and is going to go to the garage to give me time with my romance dramas tonight.
Yeah, he's a keeper. ♥️
(He will swear up and down he hates romance and has no idea how to do romance and that romance is overrated. One day I may point out his error, but I doubt he'd believe me.)

Summer hours mean Friday afternoons off if I adjust my hours. I decided to start half an hour earlier each day. Did a bunch of prep last night, and thank goodness I decided to leave a bit earlier than planned as well! Neighbour's cat got out, so we had a bit of a chase in the yard; forgot to pull my keys out of my purse, so had some confusion on why I couldn't get into my car; mystery alarm on car that, I think after some troubleshooting, means I am out of washer fluid. Made it in at the time I wanted so starting the week out well!
I am going to really appreciate this Friday. I hope. 😅

Making budae jjigae for dinner. Asked Partner to bring up two frozrn pqcks of homemade broth. Heated them up in a pot on the stove, and as I was pouring it over the sliced ingredients in another pot, I wondered why the stock was so chunky.
It slowly dawned on me he brought up one pack of broth and one of applesauce.
I have added some additional water, and we are going to see how this goes now, because we are past the point of no return.
I figure the apple will go well with the pork. I hope.

@nprofile…7t92 @nprofile…hz68 I had vertigo for 6 years due to an absolutely incompetent doctor I was with at the time. Finally a specialist I had been sent to in error listened to me and suggested vestibular physiotherapy. They did that maneuvre, and after a couple months of balance retraining I was fine. Haven't had a problem since. Whoever figured that move out was a genius.

@nprofile…7t92 I have no idea which specialist. They won't tell me that til the specialist calls me.
This one appeared in December, and 1st appointment they told me it could disappear. It has not. In fact, it may now have a twin which is what is causing me all the pain.
A nice pharmacist helped me figure out taping the pinky to the ring finger may help reduce the pain, and so far she is right.
As usual it's the supporting players that help more than the actual medical professionals. I have played this game before. I will somehow survive it again, but I will have my grumbles for a while. 🙂

The disjointed, overworked, underfunded sysrem is terrible for all conditions. I have been throught this before with the vertigo. All I can do is gripe, fight, and try to help myself best I can.

Got in to see NP. It's a gangleon cyst. She is referring me to a hand surgeon, though apparently they don't take cysts as being serious so who knows when I will hear back.
She had little in the way of help. I could try to find a splint maybe. Painkillers aren't great because they will affect my blood pressure, but occassionally should be ok.
That's it. That's what I got.
My hand still hurts. Someday maybe it won't.

My attempts to get an injured hand dealt with and pain limited before probable surgery is turning into a multiweek epic saga, with reschedule of appointment number two in three days. And I only got it rescheduled quickly because of guilt trip number two on a receptionist in as many weeks.
But Ontario's healthcare is good enough that we can cut staff to save money. Yeah. Sure. Ok then.

Every time my phone vibrates I have a worry that I don't feel the watch vibrating because the hand injury has gotten worse. Then I remember I went analogue so OF COURSE no vibrating.
I have been wearing fitness trackers and smart watches for many many years, so I expect this is going to take some time to not be weird anymore.

I called the ultrasound clinic my doctor wanted me to use for the hand issue in hopes of getting an appointment before June. Because pain, and the whole needing to use my hand for things. Nope, nothing. Had a mild grumble because pain. Receptionist tells me about another imaging place in the area, and when I called them they said "We can get you in next week".

Don't even want to start on the fact that if I want to remove a lump from the palm if my hand I will have to pay out of pocket unless it's cancer, "or the surgeon can find a loophole in OHIP".

I have a lump on my hand I need to get an ultrasound for. The non-provincial healthcare company that does this used to let you book online, but after a privacy issue they removed the online booking option. So now you have to call.
I check website. Mon to Fri, 7am opening. Check watch. 7:57 am. So I call.
"You are calling outside of office hours. Please call back during regular hours."

Viki has a series called YAO Chinese Folktales. It's an animated series of stories, some done as classical style stories and some less so. All very entertaining and thought provoking. I recommend if you are looking for some short stories.

I thought I would regret baby in romance and I mostly didn't. Although baby put some cold water on the romance as babies do. It wasn't bad, just not my thing. But the baby was cute, and the leads were nice together.
The supporting cast were the real winners for me, such a range of characters for such a short drama. I really liked them a lot.
All told I enjoyed this more as a drama than a romance.

So this sort of weather was very "tuen around and go home you idiot" weather. Especially if badly dressed. I was so stressed out watching them. 😅

@nprofile…29wq after thinking about it overnight, I am writing a list of what is and isn't in my job. I will add more as I think of them. That way I have a list I can check and have a personal adjustment if needed.

I really really need to find a way to not get stressed at work in spite of all the things that make work (in general) a horror. I don't think changing jobs will net me anything other than less pay. I can't seem to just be at peace and let go of the stupid things happening and the irritatations. I am trying this week and I still snapped at someone this morning, a mere 3 days out of vacation. How the heck anyone manages to be calm, peaceful, and professional these days is beyond me.
So anyways, just a rant because work is being terrible. Nothing else really.

I attended Nipissing University, and had classes in portables between the main building, the beaver ponds, and portables. We had Canada geese in those ponds. We got attacked regularly in the spring. Very regularly.
That employee huddled in the corner in the one shot? That is a person with Canada goose experience. They know what is what when you come up against a murder chicken in spring time. I understand that pain well. I still have a terror of Canada geese, and my university years are well behind me.
