yes, i read the EFF's article. they are known to exaggerate claims or use FUD to make a point. read better writeups (likr citizen lab). read the bill itself.
the bill doesnt describe backdoors to any encryption as far as i could see (granted i only skimmed), only data sharing with less bureaucracy, and increased surveillance of whatever the provider can already see

unfortunately there is no good browsers. chromium is more secure than firefox and its derivatives; mozilla/firefox is becoming ad and ai oriented; chromium derivates are insecure; brave is run by a bigot crypto shill.
if you're not very tech savvy, firefox derivatives are probably your best bet. they both value privacy and come with sane defaults. i would recommend using container tabs, ublock origin, and maybe jshelter as far as extensions go - nothing else.
browser extensions are a major attack vector which is why chrome is doing manifest v3

this is very misleading:
- clarification: desktop only works when you have a mobile device setup and pair it like these (unless you virtualize android)
- if someone gets access to the phone number they can impersonate you and then obtain info from your contacts. they'll be notified of a change in your "safety number", but unless they're being vigilant they might still comply with the bad actor
- push notifications are somewhat insecure, but group chats have nothing to do with it. the attack you describe would work in any chat, and the resolution is the same: don't invite or accept chats you don't recognize, and always verify out of band.
- if you disable notifications or use f-droid it will not go through apple or google push notification servers
- bonus point: your best bet for device security is @npub1kwa…e0nj on a modern pixel. everything else is insecure by comparison
