I am concerned about the costs of running a relay though, seems like it can add up quickly if you're a free relay or don't charge users enough.
Using the lnbits plugin seems to be working okay for me but it's not the simplest thing to setup.

Yeah just look at the xz lib supply chain attack that happened recently.
Something like that probably happens all the time with nation-state actors inserting subtle vulnerabilities into open source software.
Go to any major lib GitHub and look at how many PRs get merged with superficial or even seemingly no review.

You can utilize a SDR with a high gain antenna to decode HDMI rf noise back to an image for example. Stacks like the rpi also require you to trust many layers of abstraction and blob firmware which you cannot inspect.

Strike has this design so all interactions with Bitcoin are possible with the denomination being isolated as USD. It's a clever trick to let users receive Bitcoin without a taxable event, since you don't receive the Bitcoin, Strike does. They then credit you in USD. The Bitcoin tab is actually a whole separate account from an accounting perspective.
