We’re not eating every day. I’ve been sleeping without a mattress for 2 years. I wake up in the middle of the night because of the noise of drones and explosions and people shouting and crying, because of hunger, and because of nightmare. I’m inhaling plastic smoke most days to cook food and heat up water. I lost half of my weight, I’m pale, and my hair is thinning out while I’m 21 years old.

In #Palestine, traditionally, people eat feseekh, a very salted fish. The fish is kept in salt for a month, which cooks its flesh. It tastes very strong, and it’s delicious! If salted fish is unavailable, some people have smoked fish instead.
Unfortunately, my family wasn’t able to afford feseekh this year. But I enjoyed thinking about it. God willing, we’ll have it next year.

There’s a tradition in #Palestine: volunteers called Mesaharati walk the city to wake people up, so that nobody misses Suhoor.
This morning, the local Mesaharati were very enthusiastic: they were calling out and banging their drums loudly. They woke everyone up immediately. 😅

This is the second day of #Ramadan in #Gaza.
The fast itself starts every day at the first light of day (and it ends at sunset). It coincides with one of the five daily prayers, Fajr. Before Fajr, we eat a morning meal called Suhoor. My family always wakes up and eats this meal all together. It’s wonderful.
Ramadan is a very communal experience. Everyone supports each other and is in a good mood.

I hope one day I can leave Gaza and get access to an observatory. God willing. My dream would have been to study astrophysics, but it’s not possible in Gaza.
Do you ever look at the stars and think that you’re not looking up, but around? That we’re extremely small in an infinite universe? I find it so beautiful, it helps me to think about other things than this life.

In the genocidal war, people have been burning plastic a lot to make fuel. This emits very thick and black smokes that are extremely unhealthy for all Gazans. Many orphans make a living out of this, making some money to subsist but at the same time, destroying their future prospects at a healthy life. Solar panels can’t power cars, but they avoid using fuel for generators for civilians and for hospitals.

Solar installations are critical for essential health services: they have supported hospitals (for instance via a solar power plant at hospital Nasser in Khan Yunis funded with Japanese aid), helping reduce reliance on fuel-powered generators and keeping vital services running. For the nerdy engineers among us: solar panels consist in two layers of silicon: one enriched with phosphorus (N-doped), and one enriched with boron (P-doped).
Silicon is made out of sand, it’s the semiconductor that forms the structure of photovoltaic cells. It allows electrons to be excited by sunlight (but they don’t move on their own).

Gaza has also been subjected to a siege since 2007 (when I was 3 years old). There are very persistent electricity shortages and power cuts for many years, exacerbated by blockades and damage to infrastructure. For households and businesses, switching to solar often reduces the cost compared to running diesel generators or paying for unpredictable grid electricity.

Unfortunately, two years into a genocidal massacre, as well as 18 years into a siege, we can’t protect ourselves well from the cold:
We lack warm clothes, gloves, scarves and beanie hats. Warm drinks are very expensive. And people don’t burn wood in fireplaces, but plastic instead, which diffuse cancer-inducing smokes.

The noise of bombing and shelling could be heard in the distance all day here. It's really exhausting and nerve-wracking.
Even the tiny things of everyday life seem more difficult and intense when there's gunfire attacks in the distance. Today I helped my mother with cooking, I spent some time cleaning the place where we sleep, and it took me forever heating water to have a shower.
My tooth is still painful but better than yesterday.

Now we live in tents. The tents are being flooded by the rain. We’re sheltering in a school in Khan Yunis that’s overcrowded: women and children sleep in classrooms, but men sleep in tents in the schoolyard, at the mercy of the elements, the wind, the rain, the cold.

This is what our house looked like after it was bombed. So much shattered in one instant. We went back seeing it, contemplating the massive effort that would be needed for reconstruction.
And in the meantime, we weren’t even able to live together anymore. Our family was scattered all over the Gaza Strip, living in various tents and shelters. We used to eat all our meals together. Now we would sometimes spend weeks without seeing one another.

At the end of 2023, the massacre started, and half the population of the #Gaza Strip found refuge in #Rafah. Rafah wasn’t able to accommodate so many people, it was a huge humanitarian crisis.
Then on the 6th of May 2024, the occupation decided they would start bombing Rafah. We left our home in a hurry, without taking much with us, because we were sure we would be back home after a few days. But our house was bombed, and we’ve not been back then.

The Zeyada Family is a big, close and loving family. All of my brothers and their spouses joined forces and they were able to buy a very big house where we could all live together. It was a big house in #Rafah, the city furthest south in the #Gaza Strip, just next to the Egyptian border. It was a house full of love, children’s toys, delicious smells from cooking, secret corners, comfortable seats, and happy memories.

Today, I’d like to talk to you about my family, the Zeyada family.
This is me, I’m Khaled, 21 years old.
And this is all my brothers!
There’s 5 of us, from right to left:
My brother Ahmed, my father Mohammed, my brother Bilal, my younger brother Omar, and my brother Osama.
The boys are my nephews: there’s Mohammed the son of Ahmed, Mohammed the son of Bilal, and Bilal the son of Ahmed.
