Started with a rough —call it version 0.9 — build that barely had X11 working, evolved through five iterations, landed on something I'd call "production-stable personal desktop" around version 2.0 on FreeBSD 15.0 with a heavily customized MATE, ZFS boot environments, BastilleBSD jails for microservices, WireGuard tunnels and PF.

On the many occasions when I have lost then regained USB connectivity to a ZFS pool on a mobile hard disk drive, and (naturally) it becomes impossible to run any zpool command on the pool:
– there's never an endless freeze.
Restart the OS in the normal way, and be patient. Sometimes very patient.
That was, Kubuntu 25.04 and 25.10 with (OpenZFS-encrypted) root-on-ZFS. I have not yet had an opportunity to play the waiting game with 26.04.

FreeBSD 14.2-RELEASE is officially recommended for new installations.
If you perform a new installation, I do recommend the switch to pkgbase – before exiting the installer for the operating system.
The switch is not difficult, now – and will become easier with future releases.
Your emphasis should be to minimise the traditional steps – in particular, do not rush to add a user. Things such as addition are, instead, easily performed after first boot of the installed system.

It has taken years because the worldwide research community must change from the "readers and libraries pay" model to "writers pay." For ACM, the transition is well underway. Many ACM conferences are now open access, and I'm happy to say that CACM is now fully open access as well (previously, it was just the older issues).
Opening CACM's content and creating a new website was a deliberate decision to try to make CACM into a central forum for the technical community to exchange ideas and debate issues. ACM is well aware that this community is orders of magnitude larger than its membership, so opening access to its flagship publication is an essential first step.
There are many technical websites and blogs online; most are focused on specific topics and areas or intended for readers who may not have a technical background. CACM's remit is computing in general, and we assume our readers are technically literate.
