When the book-burning by GenAI/LLM companies was revealed, the defences of this were "oh the books aren't rare" and "oh they're only buying books from pulping companies that will be destroyed anyway".
Neither of these is true. The AI companies are buying bulk orders of obscure titles from ordinary booksellers:

And also, the developers of Mastodon etc have deliberately built the Fediverse in a way that keeps the running costs low enough that servers can be started by individuals if need be.
A typical Fedi server for one person starts at about 5-10 euros per month, and that's through a managed hosting provider who does all the tech stuff for you.

Comparison of LLMs/AI with the industrial revolution is totally incorrect.
The industrial revolution automated repetition of a human design. You put a human-created design in the machine and it repeated it exactly, whether it was cutlery or paperclips or engine parts or biscuits or books.
LLMs/AIs pretend to automate the design stage, but in reality they are just stealing human designs and laundering them so the designer gets no credit or compensation. If humans stop designing, the LLMs/AIs stop working as they have no ability to design things themselves. LLMs/AIs are just labour theft laundering machines.

If you're making a video and you want people to watch it, please please don't use an AI-generated thumbnail 😞
AI images scream "This is worthless slop" louder than anything else. People who might have enjoyed your video may skip it completely because they think the content will be slop too.
If you're making a real video, use a real thumbnail from the video itself. Staying genuine tells people what the video is really like, and connects you to your audience.

The same files on the same PC play totally fine in Celluloid, but not in VLC. Any ideas why VLC is having problems?

Thanks everyone, solved it as suggested by installing Gparted and setting it to GPT. After that it worked fine with Disks.

At the moment it just goes to 2TB.
I'm using the Disks app in Linux Mint.

Trump can't cut off trade with Spain because it's part of the European Union. He would have to cut off trade with the whole EU, which would be a calamity for the US.
That's the idea of trading blocs like the EU, they give collective bargaining power for smaller countries so they can stand up to larger countries. Trade blocs do for small countries what unions do for workers.
The reason big countries try to split up trading blocs is because a united bloc can stand up to them. It's the same reason corporations try to split up unions.
On the other hand, Trump CAN cut off trade with the UK because it left the European Union.

Been going through a zillion Fediverse-connected blogs to find ones to highlight on FediFollows and the best ones are those that are a bit rough round the edges. On those blogs you can most easily tell it's a human doing it, and that's the most valuable quality a blog can have.
If you're doing a blog, don't be scared of it looking a bit amateurish! Ultimately blogs are supposed to be about humans reading the thoughts of other humans. The more obviously human-created your blog is, the better 👍

It is weird how criticising Bluesky or the AT protocol can attract replies similar to those that appeared when criticising cryptocurrency in 2020-ish.
It's sometimes really toxic "you just don't understand" rants, sometimes pages long, making accusations of being out to get Bluesky and/or AT, even personal attacks and swearing.
With most protocol criticism you get quite dry straightforward level-headed technical responses or rebuttals, but when Bluesky/AT is criticised there is often a hyperdefensive and accusatory reaction. It's really odd and offputting.

The more videos there are from more angles, the harder it gets for anyone to fake a video as it would have to match up with the rest 100%.
Due to various ways of faking things, it's more important than ever to have multiple angles in order to preserve the truth.
It is really hard to fake something when there are multiple other genuine angles of the same event.

Here's an idea:
Refer to murders by government officials as murders. When the government kills someone illegally and most legal experts agree it is murder, call it a murder.
ICE's shooting that was recently caught on camera was murder, ICE refused to investigate the killer and instead harassed the victim's widow. Call ICE murderers.
Trump's "strikes" on civilian boats that posed no threat to anyone are considered by most international legal experts as murder. Call Trump a mass murderer, he is one.
I know that statement sounds hyperbolic and conspiratorial, but it's simply a concise summary of the legal consensus.

Trump's "Board of Peace" does not belong to the US government or any government or other public organisation. It just belongs personally to Trump.
Even if Trump was removed from office as US president, he would remain chair of the Board of Peace. There is also no way for him to be removed from the chairmanship, and he would control all of the Board of Peace's activities.
This is NOT an international treaty or anything like the UN. It's a private organisation that would be controlled by Trump personally, no matter what happens in the US political scene.

-There was no war going on
-The boats were civilian
-The people on the boats were civilian
-They were in international waters
-They presented no threat to anyone
-There has been no evidence presented against any of the murdered people
-All of the survivors who were arrested by US forces were quickly released without charge (strongly suggesting no sealed evidence)

This is the problem with abandoning international law, it will cause countries to do things like obtain their own nuclear weapons.
In the period after the Second World War, international law and security guarantees were used to discourage the proliferation of nuclear weapons. If those guarantees and laws are abandoned in favour of "might is right", then every country will scramble for nukes etc and the chance of horrific wars greatly escalates 😑

It's weird, Christianity is supposedly a religion built around Jesus, a middle eastern person who is recorded as explicitly telling rich people to give away their wealth to help the poor, and telling everyone to help injured penniless foreigners that no one else will touch.
But now there are "christian nationalists" who promote billionaires, chase after wealth for themselves and blame all society's problems on refugees and people from the middle east.
It doesn't make any sense. Do "christian nationalists" not see the contradictions?
Is this some deep flaw in humanity, or is this down to manipulation by powerful figures?

@nprofile…3v0z It's how things used to be too, everything came with a repair manual or circuit diagram and user-accessible casing, and could be serviced instead of replaced. Watching retro tech channels about old devices, it's clear how much the industry has turned its back on repairability.

If one Fedi instance disappears, it is only a small fraction of the entire membership and they can get back on the network by joining another instance. Also, well-run instances don't just disappear, they give several months warning about closing so people can move accounts elsewhere and keep their followers etc.
With Bluesky and other (de facto) centralised services, one high up corporate official can decide to exclude you from the entire network. You cannot get back on the network.

The internet isn't quite the all-encompassing fount of knowledge that it's sometimes made out to be.
I often do amateur research on local history and there are lots of locally significant places and events which have few or no results on the open internet. You have to manually trawl through newspaper archives etc to get any solid info and these may be missing numbers or locked behind a paywall.
If you are lucky enough to speak to someone who remembers events some time ago, it's clear that there are vast areas of human experience that no one has written up or recorded online.

Relying on individuals blocking bad accounts does not work in the real world. Here's a concrete example:
A black grandfather played with his white grandchildren. His family videoed it and shared this wholesome scene.
Far right racists stole the video, removed the context and claimed it was a paedophile grooming victims. They posted their edited version and a far right moron with over a million racist followers shared the video.
The black grandfather is now living in fear, but the social network (Musk's X) won't take the posts down and the police claim that sharing the video isn't a crime.

@nprofile…args It's frustrating because Trump has so little interest in his job. His predecessors (even the most corrupt ones like Nixon) tended to be genuinely interested in world affairs, so it was at least possible to reason meaningfully because both sides cared about the outcome. Trump doesn't care and seems to be so shallow that he is swayed by gold trinkets (Apple) and love letters (North Korea) and his opinion flaps in the wind without a solid base. It's like a bored spoilt child is in charge.

It's not enough for LLMs to have disclaimers at the bottom, they shouldn't be on Google etc if the information isn't reliable.
Maybe LLMs need to be specifically banned from giving medical advice?

I don't know if people in the UK realise how much danger there is from Reform.
The UK political system has no written constitution, it has left the EU and two of its major parties say they intend to leave the ECHR. Leaving the ECHR would allow the UK parliament to do anything it wants including a re-run of 1930s/40s Germany.
There would be no supreme court to stop it because there is no constitution. The monarchy wouldn't do anything either.
Fascists in power in the UK would have no checks and balances. Trump has at least had some speedbumps slowing him down, Farage would have nothing stopping him at all.

Discussion of decentralised social media is frustrating sometimes. Certain kinds of people won't even consider the idea and their logic goes like this:
"Our dictator is so awful, if only we had a nice dictator instead."
"What about having multi-party elections?"
"Don't be ridiculous, only political nerds care about democracy. Ordinary people will be paralysed by choice if they have to choose a party, they can only cope with the concept of dictatorships."
