The main reasons for me to use Safari on macOS despite being behind on web standards is integration with its iOS siblings and performance.
However: bookmark sync is unreliable and relatedly reading list is so janky too that I switched to GoodLinks. And somehow the UI gets increasingly sluggish until I restart it like an old Windows system.
I guess it's time for an experiment.

Watching the frustratingly fruitless fights over the USEFULNESS of LLM-based coding helpers, I've come down to 3 points that explain why ppl seem to live in different realities:
Most programmers:
1) Write inconsequential remixes of trivial code that has been written many times before.
2) Lack the taste for good design & suck at code review in general (yours truly included).
3) Lack the judgement to differentiate between 1) & FOSS repos of nontrivial code, leading to PR slop avalanche.

bugs aside, it doesn’t support dependency groups for uv pip and it doesn’t support dynamic versions in project mode (uv lock/sync)
that’s a double-whammy that makes it impossible to use for FOSS except as a faster replacement for pip.
also uv tool/uvx doesn’t support inheriting dependencies which makes it impossible to run Ansible which is kinda a big deal

You should use --locked otherwise you may install incomplete lock files. It already saved me a few times where I almost used wrong index servers in CI. It uv sync thinks it needs to update the lock files something is going wrong.

this reminds me I wanted to ask you forever: are you aware of a tool that I can feed audio (or video) in and that spits out subtitles that I can upload to YouTube? YT’s auto-subs are a bit challenged by my… speaking idiosyncrasies… but e.g. AudioHijack’s Whisper model produces pretty good results but not in a format I can use (I think I need SRT?). Something weird about myself that I keep learning the hard way is that for some weird reason, my brain does not click with an one-tool-for-everything approach.
I love Obsidian & I love it for knowledge management. But for some reason, I cannot write in it. There’s no meaningful difference between writing in iA Writer & Obsidian, but forcing myself to write in Obsidian causes so much resistance I just don’t write. b) you can’t fork Uber/Lyft, so I don’t think it’s a fair comparison. If uv were commercially-licensed I would get the argument, but not as long as it’s MIT/Apache.

I don’t think y’all quite grok what uv makes so special due to your seniority. The speed is really cool, but the reason Rust is elemental is that it’s one compiled blob that can be used to bootstrap and maintain a Python development. A blob that will never break because someone upgraded Homebrew, ran pip install or any other creative way people found to fuck up their installations. Python has shown to be a terrible tech to maintain Python.

Given how much of Python’s ecosystem nowadays depends on Rust, I don’t consider that a valid argument anymore. As Jacob wrote in the initial post, it’s a thing now wherever we like it or not. uv is neither the first nor the last and it shouldn’t be held against it. I’m pretty sure Hatch has a Rust component nowadays too.

As much as I hate VC, I find this whole genre of pearl-clutching around uv weird. FOSS projects flame out all the time too. If Frost loses interest, there’s no PDM anymore. Same for Ofek and Hatch(ling).
I fully expect Astral to flame out and us having to fork/take over—it’s the circle of FOSS. To me uv looks like a genius sting to trick VCs into paying to fix packaging. We’ll be better off either way.

virtualenvs are the closest we have in Python to a build artifact. They’re well-documented, widely tested, & can be deployed both as Docker containers, distro packages, or just an rsync. uv even brought back relocatable venvs so you can move them around!?
I see no semantical reason to keep the application outside of the virtualenv—it makes deployments weirder & more complicated to reason about (cue PYTHONPATH).

On macOS, `pipx run --python 3.12 mopup` is so much better than any of the on-demand builders and their various weird failure modes. Even standalone-python has failed on me in practice due to the way it’s compiled.
My favorite feature remains that it’s a universal build with a force-x86 binary called `python3.12-intel64` that makes it easy to create virtualenvs that are guaranteed to be Intel-base (and not ARM).

A current pet peeve of mine is people claiming that one starts one’s programming journey with simple code, then somehow evil OOP and even more evil patterns come along and make everything super complex. But fortunately at the end is enlightenment and simple code again. (1/6)
