I am not in any way an expert, but it’s my understanding that neutrinos are created in flavor eigenstates (determined by the reaction that creates the neutrino), which are not also mass eigenstates, and this is what causes the oscillation. I don’t think it’s currently possible to measure the mass of a neutrino directly, so I don’t think we worry about mass eigenstates.

I’m not an expert in the field, so I don’t know how rigorously or why this should be true. Presumably John will enlighten us; but given his statement, that third possibility is excluded.

“We know m₁ and m₂ are really close to each other, while m₃ is further away.” would seem to preclude that.
