In 2016, a hot-fire test explosion of a SpaceX Falcon 9 lost AMOS-6, the first and only satellite built for Facebook. Since then F9 hot-fires don't have payloads stacked. FB never attempted a satellite project again (which is probably for the better). #BlueOrigin appears to have heeded the historical lesson from the competition's mistake by not stacking payloads on the #NewGlenn rocket before the hot-fire test. It's still rare for an #asteroid to be detected on impact trajectory. Bigger shooting stars at night are mostly missed opportunities. As a #spacegeek but not an astronomer, I'm not in their discussions. So I noticed it on a monitor on my wall. It mostly displays aircraft activity around PDX and the Pacific Northwest. But 2 panels are space related, my own software, using NOAA aurora & NASA asteroid data. #2026JN4 stood out as a blue line on the close asteroid passes. #astronomy #LowFlyingRocks

At approximately 2026-May-15 13:44 UTC, #asteroid #2026JN4 impacted Earth's atmosphere shortly after discovery. The 1m-wide rock was not a threat. Most that size are simply not discovered before becoming a common fireball meteor. If you're wondering what's taking so long to get the crew out of the Orion spacecraft... The thruster propellants are very toxic. So the initial approach by US Navy crews trained for this came with full hazmat covering and air sensors to make sure it was safe first. Now it's safe and they've pulled alongside the craft. #NASA #Artemis2 #MoonJoy

The Apollo 8 astronaut who took the original "Earthrise" photo in 1968, USAF Major General William "Bill" Anders, made an Apollo 8 section at his Heritage Flight Museum at Skagit Airport #KBVS in Burlington WA. When asked by the science team, Wiseman and Hansen each reported seeing two impact flashes on the dark side of the Moon, so far. Those are actual meteoroid impacts. Not just the solar corona but also "Earthshine" (sunlight reflected off Earth on the dark side of the Moon) illuminating the portion of the Moon that faces the Earth. #NASA #Artemis2 is taking observations of a 57-minute total solar eclipse as the spacecraft flies through the shadow of the Moon. We can't see this eclipse from Earth but the shadow of the Moon is always out there in space. Unlike a solar eclipse viewed from Earth, they are close to the Moon so it appears much larger than the Sun in their perspective. Without Earth's atmosphere around them, there is potential for very clear view of the solar corona during totality. #Artemis #Moon🌖 #Orion #space

Heard on #NASA #Artemis2 coverage: #NASA #Artemis2 pilot (second in command) Vic Glover describes how impressed he was with dramatically steep terrain he could see through camera optics on crater walls on the surface of the Moon. They're over 4000mi/6400km from the Moon. I've never been to enough altitude to see any terrain 4000 miles away. From an airliner at 40,000ft/12,000m altitude, in clear weather the horizon is 250mi/400km away. I want to see their pictures! #Artemis #Moon🌕 #Orion #space

A little orbital dynamics for those interested in the #NASA #Artemis2 mission:
To raise the perigee (low point) of an orbit, the rockets have to be fired at apogee (high point). That part is done.
Conversely, to raise the apogee (high point), rockets are fired at perigee (low point). That's coming up.

But the launch range (Cape Canaveral Space Force Station) is currently "no go" while working a technical issue related to the flight termination system. (Every big rocket has a system to destruct the rocket if it goes off course toward a populated area.) It is not yet known if this can or will be resolved before the launch window closes. Try as best you can to set expectations that rocket🚀 launches can be delayed. Weather, mechanical & electronics can cause delays or completely scrub (postpone) a launch. Launch procedures are for safety, not for spectators. When it flies, we want the mission achieved safely. If you hadn't thought of it, any delay becomes a huge disappointment. Medical training details like that provide us a glimpse into why it takes so long for each astronaut and crew to train for a spaceflight. They also have to learn all the ISS systems. They have to take turns as CapCom (Capsule Communicator name originating from Apollo era) because when the station calls or gets called, they're always talking with an astronaut. I was asked if the night splashdown of #Crew11 #CrewDragon #Endeavour indicated extra urgency. Actually, that's normal. #NASA has done night splashdowns after Demo-2 (test pilots before Crew-1) in 2020 off Tallahassee FL was mobbed by gawking civilian boats.
