Yes. That is the outcome of the tax. Go thru each block since SegWit activated and sum up the MB of each block that exceeds 1MB (witness vs non-witness), that is the additional tax in bits you are paying for in storage to accommodate lower fees on-chain.
Not to mention that some of those bits only paid 1/4 the price in sats vs others to access the same memory on your disk space. They have an incentive to write more bits on your node using witness since it costs them 1/4 the price for the same memory a non-witness consumes.
Mirroring seems reasonable to me. You pretty much negate the biggest concerns in my opinion.
