Their Accountants Told Them They Were Going Broke
In April 1966, the London firm Bryce, Hammer, Isherwood & Co. delivered a report to the biggest band on the planet. The verdict: "Two of you are close to being bankrupt, and the other two could soon be.
Harrison put it more plainly in his autobiography. "'Taxman' was when I first realised that even though we had started earning money, we were actually giving most of it away in taxes."
Nineteen Shillings Out of Every Twenty
Harold Wilson's Labour government had layered a supertax on top of income tax that hit the highest earners at 95 per cent. Twenty shillings made a pound, so the top bracket took nineteen and left one.
That arithmetic is the entire first verse. "Let me tell you how it will be. There's one for you, nineteen for me." Harrison closes the verse with "Should five per cent appear too small, be thankful I don't take it all.
A Year Earlier the Same Prime Minister Had Pinned Medals on Them
In June 1965 Wilson nominated all four Beatles as Members of the Order of the British Empire, an award no pop musician had received before. The official reason was economic: their 1964 breakthrough had built an export market for British music where none existed, and it pulled tourism, fashion and film along with it.
Beatles biographer Ian MacDonald read the situation exactly right. The money the band handed to the Treasury was the price of the medals.

Harrison coughs, then counts the band in himself, in what biographer Jonathan Gould calls a "grim, miserly voice." Three years earlier the Beatles had opened their first album with a shouted "One, two, three, four!" on "I Saw Her Standing There." Now the count-in is dragged, sour, and cut off before it finishes.
Gould hears self-mockery in it. In three years the band's attention had travelled from the dance floor to the counting house.
The Villain Was Written as a Comic-Book Character
Steve Turner traced the riff's inspiration to Neal Hefti's theme for the Batman television series, the pop-art sensation of 1966. That is why the band yells "Taxman!" right before the solo, the way a cartoon announces its arrival. Here comes the hero whose superpower is taking nineteen shillings out of every twenty.
Harrison Never Let the Song Age
He first played it live in 1991, twenty-five years after recording it, and introduced it onstage as "a very old song written in 1873," deadpanning that the grievance was Victorian and he had merely inherited it. He swapped the politicians for John Major, George Bush and Boris Yeltsin, worked in a verse about VAT, and added two new lines: "If you wipe your feet, I'll tax the mat. If you're overweight, I'll tax your fat.
His explanation was one sentence. "There's always a taxman."
Sixty Years Later the Complaint Still Holds
In 2019 the trade publication Tax Journal, debating whether Britain should bring supertax back, looked at what Wilson had done to the top bracket and sided with Harrison. The rate, they wrote, "wasn't a fair progressive system. It was outright theft.

Julian Assange was warning about this years ago, and today it has become a normal part of how the internet works. This makes me think of mainstream media stealth edits and retractions in the middle of the night on big stories without really notifying people after initial headlines run.
It gets worse than stealth edits though. Now, most digital information lives on centralized servers controlled by a relatively small number of organizations. When an article is removed, the link often just leads to a "page not found" error. There's usually no explanation, no record of why it disappeared, and no notice that the content was ever there in the first place.
Assange's concern wasn't just that information could be removed. It was that once something disappears from a digital archive, future generations may have no easy way of knowing it ever existed. The record doesn't just vanish; in many cases, the disappearance itself becomes invisible.
Over the years, there have been many examples of articles, government pages, datasets, and reports being removed, rewritten, or relocated. Sometimes it's for legitimate reasons such as corrections, redesigns, policy changes, or legal issues.
Researchers have also found that a significant portion of the web simply fades away over time. Studies suggest that many webpages from the early internet are no longer accessible, leaving behind broken links and missing records.
Assange is recognizing that the systems we build to shape what future generations are able to remember, study, and understand about the past are inherently and deeply manipulated as well, just like book burnings and culture destruction of the past.

Então... aberto no sentido de ser visível, mas não no sentido de poder ser utilizado por terceiros.
E por causa disso, deixou de ser compativel com a GPL, o que os obrigou a reescrever as bibliotecas de criptografia. o bug foi introduzido nessa reescrita. Como ninguém pode reutilizar o código, nenhum dev se deu trabalho de auditar porque seria trabalhar de graça, sem poder usar o código depois.
Isso até algum inteligente jogar o código no chatGPT ou sei-la que ia, e pedir pra ela fazer um exploit ;)
Mas nesse caso não foi falta de aviso de quem realmente entende. TODO MUNDO (que entende de segurança, não influencers tipo coach) avisou quando eles fecharam o código fonte que isso ia dar merda. Código fonte fechado é oficina do diabo!
E os caras fecharam por mesquinhez (mimimi, usaram nosso código aberto pra criar um concorrente, tou de chico agora). Reescreveram as pressas pra poder fechar (usavam varias bibliotecas GPL que não poderiam mais usar se fechassem o código). Todo mundo previu desastre.
E o desastre veio igual previram.
Por que? porque os hackers ouviram os avisos dos especialistas e começaram a trabalhar. Quem ouviu influencer e marketeiro, se fodeu. Quem ouviu quem entende (mas não tem tanta visibilidade assim), ficou 1000 bitcoins mais rico!

Joshua McHoes's father was a veteran of the Army and Air Force who worked as an electrician and wired a cabin later used to grow cannabis. He refused to name the people involved and drew seven years in Fort Leavenworth under a bad conduct discharge. A failed drug test on probation sent him back to prison before Joshua was born in 1991.
Then the Drug War Came for His Mother
The family moved from Wisconsin to Cordova, Alaska when Joshua was three, looking for a fresh start. A local informant exaggerated his mother's small cannabis purchases into a distribution case, and she pled no contest to a misdemeanor to avoid prison. Cannabis is now legal in Alaska. The charge still shows on her record and to any employer running a background check.
He Went Looking for the Words for What He Had Lived
By his teens, Joshua had watched the drug war reach both parents. In 2007 he found Adam Kokesh on YouTube, then Ron Paul, then Rothbard, Mises, and Hayek. Classical liberalism gave him language for power, control, and the state's habit of hurting the people it claims to protect.
By 2014 He Was Wiring the Dispensaries
Joshua joined the Alaska Libertarian Party in 2012 and worked on the ballot initiative that legalized cannabis the following year. As a working electrician, he ended up wiring the commercial grows and dispensaries his father had been imprisoned for helping build.
Then He Became the Only Local Coordinator in Alaska
Joshua enrolled at the University of Alaska-Anchorage, moved from engineering to political science and economics, and joined Students For Liberty as the only Local Coordinator in the state. His first events drew almost no one, and he kept building anyway.
Working with Anchorage Assembly members, Joshua helped pass a municipal ban on government use of facial recognition and drone surveillance. The ordinance carved out narrow exceptions for search and rescue and for research, but blocked those tools from being used to collect identifying information on residents.
Then the State Capitol Called
In 2024 Joshua earned an internship in the Alaska State Legislature for the 2025 session, where he wrote memos, interviewed legislators, and drafted research papers that shaped policy conversations. He now serves as a State Policy Intern with the Marijuana Policy Project, building a coalition to advance cannabis legalization in Pennsylvania.
And He's Fighting to Expunge Charges Like His Mother's
Joshua is supporting a bill in Alaska that would finally expunge cannabis charges in the state, including the kind that still hangs around his mother's neck. The thing that was meant to break his family became the engine of his work.

One of the most common criticisms of free markets is that wealth "trickles down" from the top.
Yet many of the same people advocate a system where wealth is first taken from millions of individuals, concentrated in the hands of the largest organization with the legal power to tax and spend, and then redistributed back to society.
If you're skeptical that resources flow efficiently through decentralized markets, why would you assume they'll flow more efficiently through a centralized bureaucracy?
Regardless of where you stand politically, that's a question worth thinking about.

We have a new Economic Inequality topic page—
Public attention to economic inequality has grown a lot over the last twenty years. At the same time, the available data has greatly improved too: it now covers many more countries and longer time periods, and is more comparable and accessible than ever.
But the wide range of sources and metrics can be hard to navigate. Each has its own strengths and weaknesses, and they cover many different definitions of inequality.
We’ve just published a new topic page on economic inequality to help make the data easier to understand.
It covers three key international datasets, each offering a different perspective: the World Inequality Database, the Luxembourg Income Study, and the World Bank’s Poverty and Inequality Platform.
The World Bank data, for example, is a crucial source that allows us to compare income inequalities both within and between countries around the world.
In the chart we show this for a selection of countries. We see that in the United States, there’s a 7-fold gap between the incomes of the poorest and the richest 10%. But even the poorest 10% in the US live on much more than the "rich" in a poor country like Madagascar.

The British Empire forcibly ended the slave trade across much of the world by waging wars, attacking slave traders, seizing slave ships, and blockading or pressuring countries that continued to permit it. Given the scale of British military and diplomatic intervention, I think “ended” is the correct term in this context.
