Socrates’ Warning
Socrates warned that democracy had a fatal flaw built into its foundation: it treats every opinion as equal.
The expert & the ignorant get the same vote. An uninformed citizen holding the same power as a statesman is not fairness… it’s a recipe for disaster.
He used a simple, brutal analogy.
If you’re sick, you don’t hold a vote on your treatment. You find a doctor and ask him.
Letting crowds decide complex political questions is just as absurd. Skilled orators replace skilled thinkers, and feelings replace facts.
Democracy rewards performance, not wisdom. He watched talented speakers manipulate entire crowds using fear, ego, and comfort… promising simple answers to complicated problems.
The crowd applauded loudest for whoever made them feel best, not whoever told the truth.
He warned that charismatic frauds would always outperform honest experts in a popularity contest. Incompetent people make bad decisions… & in democracy, they make those decisions for everyone. The system hands power to the loudest voice, not the sharpest mind.
Then came the final irony.
Socrates, who dedicated his life to truth and critical thinking… he was sentenced to death by democratic vote. The same system he criticized proved his point by executing him.
The crowd chose comfort over a man who made them question themselves.
Popularity won.
Truth was defeated.
399 BC, Athens, Greece.
Socrates was tried before a jury of 500 Athenian citizens & convicted on charges of impiety (failing to acknowledge the city’s gods) & corrupting the youth.
The vote was close, roughly 280 to 220, but it was enough.
He was sentenced to death by drinking hemlock.
Socrates had multiple chances to escape or soften the verdict.
He could have proposed exile as an alternative sentence, but instead he argued his work was a service to Athens… which only further antagonized the jury.
He accepted the death sentence on principle, which many see as the ultimate act of intellectual integrity, and others as deliberate provocation.

I've pointed out something close in the article I mentioned: IMO it's possible to achieve a healthy and flexible enough privacy for dating (so people could feel safe to talk to strangers using pseudoanonymous and almost empty npubs, and still not appear as a total stranger/s{p,c}ammer to the system, by exposing the connection between the real trusted npub and the limiting dating one to a trust rank service, that real npub holder chooses themselves).
That's the inevitable trade-off: something would need to be exposed in order for such a system to work, but privacy depends a lot on what exactly and who will receive the information. I think it's worth trying to build dating capabilities in Nostr, because the alternative is actually dating apps that do (or will start doing at any moment) the ID-based KYC cringe, which makes things worse for whoever doesn't care that much about privacy. I believe that people will go here if they notice a healthier alternative and if we market it in a particular way.

While I don't ask for statistics that support this, hopefully non-literal, claim (I see who's naturally attracted here at the moment too), I still don't want it to be some self-fulfilling prophecy. Nostr is not just for male hackers and bitcoiners, and we affect who actually gets attracted to it. For example by making @nprofile…dh93 (I'm still impressed it hit the 10k TestFlight limit in a few hours!) or possibly some dating app too.

I hear it all the time, ah. I haven't been doing this since all the AI psychosis started in particular, but anyway, for some reason I was always lucky with these dating services. I found my significant other about 5 years ago using one of them, just as one of the examples. And I'm in my mid 30s right now. But that was not in the US.
We don't have any now, we are enjoying our freedom after years of looking after them. But at peak, we had 10 hens and a rooster among the poults we were gifted by a neighbour.
Actually, we loved Cockey and he looked after his hens extremely well.
They are extremely easy to look after, the only draw is locking them up at night and releasing them in the morning, to protect them from the foxes. We did that by hand, but you can get automatic door openers, or some people keep them in fenced, fox proof areas.
