AMD 收購多倫多 AI 晶片新創 Taalas，藉由把模型權重直接蝕刻進矽晶片，打造模型專屬積體電路（MSIC），以大幅提升 AI 推論（以已訓練模型產出結果）的速度與能源效率。Taalas 首款以 TSMC 6 奈米製程打造的 HC1 測試晶片，曾讓 Meta 的 Llama 3.1 8B 模型達到每秒 16,960 個權杖（token，模型處理文字的基本單位），宣稱比當時的 Nvidia GPU 快 48 倍、比 Cerebras 加速器快 8.5 倍。
這種設計不像 GPU 把模型權重放在 HBM（高頻寬記憶體）中反覆讀取，而是將權重寫入遮罩式唯讀記憶體區域；另一塊 SRAM（靜態隨機存取記憶體）則保留 KV 快取與 LoRA（低秩調適）等微調資料。Taalas 預計推出可容納 200 億參數的 HC2，較大型模型可藉由管線平行化分散至多顆晶片。例如，1 兆參數模型理論上可由約 50 顆加速���承載。AMD 可能將這類晶片搭配 Instinct GPU 與 Helios 機櫃：GPU 負責運算密集的提示詞處理，Taalas 晶片則專責逐字產生回覆。
代價是彈性大幅降低：晶片完成後幾乎綁定特定模型，若模型有超過 LoRA 等級的重大改版，便須重新投片。Taalas 表示，更新時只需調整兩層金屬層，不必從頭設計，成本與時程可望較傳統重新製造低得多。AMD 看中的主要客群應是模型業者、基礎設施供應商與推論服務商，而非一般消費市場；若每個權杖成本降低、輸出速度增加 10 至 20 倍，模型業者也能延長「測試時計算延展」的思考步驟，以較低成本改善回答正確性與降低幻覺。
Hacker News 留言普遍對公開展示的速度感到震撼，形容即時回覆有如 1990 年代末期首次使用 Google 搜尋；也有人認為，將模型做成可替換的實體卡匣，未來可能讓電腦、手機或伺服器直接使用超高速的在地模型。不過，許多人提醒展示採用的是較小且非推理型的 Llama 3.1 8B，不能直接代表前沿模型的實際表現；推理模型雖不一定在每個權杖的硬體處理速度較慢，但會產生更多內部思考權杖，使總等待時間與成本上升。討論也質疑模型快速更迭會讓硬體過早過時、封閉��型業者未必願意將權重交給實體晶片，以及權重若裝在面向外部販售的硬體上，是否會增加被擷取的風險。另有開發者指出，將權重放在晶片附近、避免反覆自外部記憶體讀取的概念並非全新，但 Taalas 的價值在於把它推進可服務大型模型的專用晶片與機櫃規模。
