Reading this _weird_ piece of theory-fiction is... _weird_. Secondary sources, I get them. This this? I know what it's _about_ but can barely pull anything out of it. It's awesome.
An essay written by the _actual_ authors, written in a half-perspective from a professor (Challenger) giving a lecture. The professor is a character invented by Arthur Conan Doyle (Author of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes), who is an imagined mix of two real life scientists from Doyle's life. The lecture is attempting to describe (and the audience is not happy, they're actively leaving the room) how sediment of layers is a universal process, that machines of geology are similar to machines of biology, but solve different problems, oh and somehow linguistics fits in there, somehow. That animals are isomorphic to one another. To save the lecture Challenger creates a synthetic debate between multiple dead biologists that are all offended at each others' explanations.
Challenger from Doyle's original book tried to prove the earth was alive by drilling into it with a machine. He drilled so deep that he punctured the earth's membrane and the earth screamed.
