When the price started to run in January 2021 I thought we'd never hit that target. By the end of 2022 my salary had doubled and we hit our target I thought I'd never hit.
Since 2022 if it weren't for a boating accident, paddle boarding mishap, and seed phrase getting lost we'd be crushing it.

If you're surprised Bitcoin depends on Proof of Work I'm really not sure what to tell you. Miners create blockspace. Kick them off your node, and you can have your own chain. Just don't expect it to add any blocks. And yea, miners are more or less visible. That's a very different thing than necessarily controlled. Especially when energy production is handled off grid and communications are obfuscated by various means. Crack down in Texas, and we'll see mining step up in Africa.
As for op_return changing (in consensus), it hasn't done so since 2010 with the release of 0.3.5. The only thing that changed is that Bitcoin Core's default policies around it were adjusted to be more in line with ensuring that mempools matched expected blocks, given that they were already being mined reliably.
