Iran will keep the war going until its impact on mid terms is locked in. They and pretty much everyone except Russia want Trump neutered or gone, and extending the conflict and its related global economic implications will likely ensure Trump’s loss of control of the house and senate.
But this path does risk giving Trump opportunity to frame the oil issue as a security crises to justify sweeping domestic executive actions, restrict voting procedures, or claim that domestic political opposition is doing the bidding of foreign adversaries like Iran. Likely all three and more given Trump’s record.
