It is a two-hour conversation, and we actually are able to reach an understanding about the converted garage. My husband and I will go and reorganize the space so that she has access to a closet and the area around a second bathroom is cleared.
But the money situation is bigger. There were agreements made about the improvements that are necessary.
There is no money on hand for the mortgage, let alone improvements.
My husband comes home, having talked to his brother who is shocked that I am saying that he needs to either handle the estate or step back. I tell him about his mother, and he is done. He sends his mother a text with a breakdown of the money, and he sends the info to his brothers. He lists the amount owed on the house, the months payments, the amount set aside for the pension overpayment, and then lists the cash on hand, reminding them that we have yet to be reimbursed for the first funeral. He says that the mortgage will be paid off when the estate is settled and certain items are sold.
