I hope all of this is done. As I told both my BIL on Saturday and my MIL last night, I am so sorry that I was not able to adequately communicate to them about the realities of our situation.
There is no money. And I am done. I will not continue to participate in this drama.

It is a two-hour conversation, and we actually are able to reach an understanding about the converted garage. My husband and I will go and reorganize the space so that she has access to a closet and the area around a second bathroom is cleared.
But the money situation is bigger. There were agreements made about the improvements that are necessary.
There is no money on hand for the mortgage, let alone improvements.
My husband comes home, having talked to his brother who is shocked that I am saying that he needs to either handle the estate or step back. I tell him about his mother, and he is done. He sends his mother a text with a breakdown of the money, and he sends the info to his brothers. He lists the amount owed on the house, the months payments, the amount set aside for the pension overpayment, and then lists the cash on hand, reminding them that we have yet to be reimbursed for the first funeral. He says that the mortgage will be paid off when the estate is settled and certain items are sold.

The Maine Democratic Party is going to have a party convention with more than 600 Democrats who will choose the next nominee.
While I could not see that working to pick the replacement for Joe Biden, I think it will work for a state like Maine.
Not California, however. Seeing what happened after Swalwell dropped out made me very grateful that the allegations came out well before the primary, and voters had a chance to see a few debates.

After my father-in-law's memorial service, we traveled to LA for a second one. Put together a lovely slideshow. Wrote two eulogies. Successfully voided a contract for a $19,995 plot for his urn and selected a prettier and far less expensive space. Handled dinners and flowers. And my kid played a song on the French horn. Completely nerve-wracking, but he did great.
And then, we did what we do after funerals in LA. We went to amusement parks. We had a great time. A really crappy month overall, but a good three days.

I am so sorry to hear of your wife's passing.
The afterwards focused on my FIL's home, and people started cleaning it out just two days later. My husband kicked out everyone but his brothers because there was no plan - just a random tossing of things in the trash.
I came in the next day. It took my husband and me three full days, but we finished yesterday.

In other news, my life has been slightly upended, and my time on social media greatly diminished.
Good news: After storming out of an IEP meeting less than 45 seconds after it started, we had two amazing meetings. We crafted what should be a very good IEP.
Better news: Both of my kids had fantastic school years. The oldest, after a rough start, excelled in band and academics. The youngest made great progress socially and academically.
Bad news: My FIL never made it out of the hospital. In for a week, out for a week, back in for another week for something unrelated, and then a rapid decline on the day he was to be released.
Worse news: My MIL, who divorced my FIL 34 years ago and remarried about 20 years ago, is off her rocker.
Worstest (making up words) news: Funerals are really expensive, and my in-laws (all of them) are really bad at math.

NY is opening an investigation of the Swalwell sexual assault allegations.
I saw the video Swalwell posted last night. He adamantly denies the assault allegations, but does not explicitly deny that the allegations regarding consensual sexual acts with staffers and interns or the sending of explicit photos to women. Instead, he states that he is not perfect and harms involving his wife will be handled privately.
Swalwell needs to drop out of the governor race. With only eight months before the election, his constituents should weigh in on whether he should resign his position as their representative.

The Swalwell accusations are just...disheartening.
JFK. An adult mistress that called him Jack. A 19-year old intern who called him Mr. President. And a system that kept this a secret until the mistress associated with the Mafia testified in the mid-1970s.
Gary Hart. Proves that candidates should not engage in Monkey Business. At least, that is what I thought.
I voted for Bill Clinton knowing it was likely he cheated on his wife, but I assumed he would be smart enough to know that he needed to stop should he win. I lost my shit when the Monica Lewinsky story came out. If you want to have extra-marital sex, don't fucking run for office. Don't sit for a 60 Minutes interview denying the Gennifer Flowers and then engage in sex acts with an intern.
And then, years later, the reality of the power differential between Clinton and Lewinsky hit. Interns? Off limits!
The Swalwell allegations are horrific. And the fact that these fuckers keep running for office..WTF?!

Hmm...
Well researched and quite interesting - sort of. Certain sections are interesting, but other sections have so many names and going ons that it can be hard to follow. Basically, she was murdered, and it was covered up to prevent the will from being challenged. Add a little corruption and the 1906 earthquake, and the explanation of a death from (somewhat) natural causes was accepted.
A few interesting paragraphs about M. H. de Young and Adolph Spreckles. Today, the two museums they are associated with are now basically one museum. But back in the day, Spreckles shot de Young. De Young survived, and Spreckles was acquitted.

Last night, I quickly gave up on a novel about Isabella Stewart Gardner. Three books I would like to read are on hold.
So, I decided to go contemporary true crime. I downloaded a book this morning and started cleaning my house.
Just finished the book and most of the cleaning. Book was more enjoyable.

The book about stunt reporters discussed a woman who covered the Lizzie Borden trial. She absolutely believed Borden was innocent.
I'm not so sure.
But what I do know is that I really didn't like this book. In fact, I think I may have hated it.

Started this book in December 2025 after I listened to a book about the history of Palm Beach. The book referenced Paris Singer, who was the father of Isadora Duncan's youngest child. The couple was in France when their son, her daughter, and the nanny were killed in a shocking auto accident. The book then linked a Palm Beach resident to the scarf Duncan was wearing and which caused her death in a freak auto accident.
I knew nothing about Duncan other than she was a dancer. The book was really odd, so it took a while to finish it. The ending was downright bizarre. She is dead, with no explanation.

Finished this book earlier this week.
I borrowed it from the library and did not want to return it. It was a perfect follow up read to Empress of the Nile, the story about a female Egyptologists 's work to save Egyptian temples that would destroyed when the Aswan Dam was completed. Jackie Kennedy was instrumental to securing the US's financial support.
And in the last chapter were some paragraphs the Mona Lisa's return to Paris from a subsequent tour of Tokyo and Moscow. Unlike her visit to the US, when she traveled by ship, she went by plane. And a spaceship appeared.
I read the paragraphs. Reread the paragraphs. And then wondered why there weren't a few more paragraphs.

And then to think about how the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden has been destroyed and what has and will likely happen to the Kennedy Center. It is heartbreaking.

My front yard looks amazing, BTW. Well, one part. I'm going to start a new Christie book tomorrow, so maybe there's hope for another section of the yard.
Dead Man's Folly has Ariadne Oliver making an appearance. And a mention of Capt. Hastings. While a fine Christie book, I am going to watch the Suchet version soon. I think seeing the characters and settings will add a lot.
What does this folly look like? One question that will not be explained. Why is it called a Dead Man's folly? 🤷‍♀️

Spent Saturday and Sunday doing yardwork and listening to Agatha Christie books. Finished two. Sad Cyprus was different than the Christie books I've read. With the exception of a brief appearance at the beginning of the book, Poirot is not in the first half. At the end, Poirot testifies at the trial. Christie did not typically have Poirot reveal the who, how, and why of the murder at a trial.

Getting ready to start my Common Book, but it's taken me a while to decide what the first pages should be. What is it that I love so much that it should be the start of a book of knowledge and lists and inquiry?
And it became clear to me a couple of weeks ago: Agatha Christie's mysteries, specifically the movie and TV adaptations with Peter Ustinov and David Suchet. I've been watching the movies again this month and decided to reread Evil Under the Sun and Death on the Nile. Unlike the movies, her books are simply OK.
Ah, but then I discovered that the audio versions are narrated by David Suchet, and I was very happy.

Last book of 2025.
This year started with Truman Capote and moved to Kennedy men misbehaving. Summer spent reacquainting myself with Judy Blume. Then back to Kennedys, which led to Jackie Kennedy's impact on the arts and historical preservation with a brief return to Truman. Egyptology followed, and then Palm Beach, mystery writers, and Guilded Age heirs.
This story is about a great-grandson of Alexander Hamilton. The story about him and his grifter wife is something.
2026 will (hopefully) be expanding on Judy Blume and other women authors that pushed boundaries in the 60s and 70s, as well as the pile of books about art - the artists, their inspirations, and a theft or two.
And Truman, of course. Always Truman.

This book was so much better than the last one. And I found it funny when this author quoted the author of the last one.
Also mentions of F. Scott Fitzgerald, Isadora Duncan, and - of course - Agatha Christie. I'm also listening to two novels right now. One based on Duncan and the other on Christie.

Henry Flagler and his wives, Marjorie Post and her husbands, and Donald Trump and his wives. The story of Palm Beach is interesting.
Also included in the tale is Paris Singer. He was a partner of Isadora Duncan, and the father of one of her children. I know very little about her, so up next with be a novel. The Marjorie Post novel was awful, so I'm starting this one being quite wary.

Not only the story about Fitzgerald and how he crafted The Great Gatsby, but also a look at an unsolved murder and the politics and culture of the Roaring 20s. There are just so many similarities to what is happening now from corruption and the rise of fascism to how language and business practices changed as a result of new technology.

I am reading about Jackie Kennedy bringing the Mona Lisa to the US, and took a detour to Egypt. Mrs. Kennedy and the Louvre both make an appearance in this book about female Egyptologist who saved the temples that were set to be destroyed by the Aswan Dam project.
Very good book.

After reading Leamer's Under the Royal Palms, I looked for a biography of Marjorie Post. Couldn't find one, but I did find this novel.
Post's life was interesting enough to keep me listening, but the book really wasn't that good.

The book about Judy Blume and her influence on Gen X discussed a lot of other books that were quite controversial. Peyton Place was one of them.
This book details the author's life and the real life murder in the author's town. I need to find a copy of the novel. According to Renee Mallett, at one time, one out of every 29 households had a copy of the book.

This book! Written by Laurence Leamer, who wrote Capote's Women. Reminds me of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, and it gives some insight into Trump and the ballroom. This book was published before 2016. In 2019, Leamer wrote about Trump and Mar-a-Lago. Adding that one to my To Read list.

Erasing the library sticker resulted in Wallis having a much lower hairline.
While I found the book entertaining, I really wish it had more info about their last years.

And another Judy Blume book. About her rather than by her. The book is interesting as it provides a historical context for her work.
Once I finish the last few books by Judy Blume, I plan on reading some of the others highlighted. This includes The Outsiders, which I have not read. I haven't even seen the movie. Friends have demanded I turn in my Gen X card because of this failing.

Turned out that I was not done with Truman Capote. After he left Alabama, he met Carol Marcus. Right about the same time she met Gloria Vanderbilt and Oona O'Neill. Before she married William Saroyan and Walter Matthau.
The owner of my favorite independent bookstore is also obsessed with all things Truman Capote, and she recommended several books, including this one.

Almost finished reading/rereading Judy Blume's books for kids. Freckle Juice was just as silly as I remember. Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great was a book I avoided because Sheila was rather obnoxious in Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing.
Blubber is going to a reread, and I am quite curious as to what I will think about it reading it with an adult perspective.

The biography of JFK mistress Mary Meyer.
The affair and her murder are detailed in the last half of the book. The affair is why I pick up the book, and I started with that chapter. I, then, read about the murder. Meyer had been married to a high-level CIA operative, and there are questions about the murder, which happened just a year after JFK was assassinated.
Then I read the beginning of the book. And I was stunned. This book was written in 1997, long before Q-Anon and Trump, and it detailed Meyer's the political transformation of her father and her husband. Both men were pacifists, and both men became disenchanted with the Democratic party and shifted towards more extreme conservative positions to "save" the country. Her father embraced the America First movement to keep America out of WW2, and her husband's work with the CIA supposedly infiltrating and funding various groups, including the modern art movement.

Continuing with JFK mistresses in March. This is a novel about Mary Meyer's missing diary that was removed from her home following her murder. I don't care for novels with female main characters that are written by male authors, and I thought some of the scenes depicting her free spirited ways were a bit outlandish, like when she stripped off her clothes and jumped into a pool at a party hosted by Robert and Ethel Kennedy.
Then I read a biography about her. Those outlandish things did happen.

Judy Blume's 2015 adult novel. And I loved it.
This book is based on real events that happened - three planes crashing in Elizabeth, NJ over three months. Blume grew up in the city and experienced the fear and uncertainty.
There are also connections to Sally J. Freeman, which is one of her most auto-biographical children's books, including a finished basement decorated with red and black tiles.

Two more Judy Blume kid books, neither of which I've read before. Both were published after I graduated from high school. I really liked As Long As We're Together. Not that big of a fan of the sequel Here's to You, Rachel Robinson.

Reread two more Judy Blume books. Starring Sally J. Freeman as Herself was a favorite of mine growing up. I did not understand the cultural references, however. I had no idea who Esther Williams or Margaret O'Brien were. I did, however, know what a party line was as we had one at our family cabin. And I knew who.Jane Russell was, although I have never seen The Outlaw.

Finished my fourth book of this year. Another Kennedy book.
I can't recommend this one. I think that in the author's attempt to present a kinder, more complete understanding of Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, she quickly dismissed everything that may be considered a negative.

Really interesting read. I did not know about the two young women involved with JFK during his presidency.
I went back and reread Judith Exner's claims, and it interesting that she framed her feelings towards JFK as being reciprocated. Her relationship was occurring at the same time as the other two women, and both claim that, at the time, they thought JFK had feelings for them. They wrote their accounts, however, much later than Exner, and it seems that in the decades between, they came to understand the relationship was vastly different than what they thought at the time.
