The thing is, I actually do like both Bsky and the Fediverse. They're *both* good platforms, and they would both be a lot better if their users didn't constantly get into pissing contests. It's a little bit irritating because the Fediverse is really good, but Fediverse evangelists are *insufferable*.

Like... the Fediverse isn't all that complicated as long as you know where to sign up (just point people directly to an instance you think they'll click with instead of telling them "get onto Mastodon"), but you quickly encounter a lot of things in the Fediverse culture that a lot of average people just will not ever vibe with, and sometimes it does feel a bit like walking on eggshells as to what is culturally acceptable in the Fediverse and what isn't.

Combine that with the fact that there is absolutely NOTHING in the way of discoverability tools beyond hashtags and the Federated timeline (which nobody ever uses), and it's not really any wonder that people are going to bsky instead. Artists and other creators are gonna go where they can gain an audience with the least amount of time possible spent building it. We can lament all day why Bsky is destined to fail, why it will inevitably go the same way as Twitter and the rest, and so forth - but the Fediverse, in its current form and culture, can unfortunately not compete with Bsky, because Bsky has tools and options that Fedi simply doesn't have. Starter packs, labelers, all that good stuff - it's really good for reach, and the Fediverse doesn't have anything comparable.

Combine *that* with the fact that so many people in the Fediverse constantly act like they're high and mighty and far more "enlightened" than the unwashed corporation-worshipping peasants who use Twitter and Facebook and Bluesky, it really isn't any surprise that it's losing the battle for gathering in the spurned Twitter refugees. And I've seen people say stuff like "Well, we don't need those people here anyway" and so forth, which like... fine, but don't then grouse when people call you "elitist," because that's exactly what elitism looks like.

I'm not even saying I don't like the Fediverse - I do. I like it a lot. There are a lot of things about it that I like *better than* Bluesky. What annoys me about it is that the Fediverse culture is just steeped in people thinking that what they have is perfect because it's free from corporate influence, and that they have absolutely nothing they can learn from these other sites/apps about why they're more popular.
