Your note reminded me of an occasion when I had a few minutes to spare while attending a conference at a university physics department. I decided to wander the halls and peek into the labs. In the basement, some double doors were propped open. I walked in, and found that nobody was there. But there was a large piece of very cool equipment. A nuclear reactor, in a tank in the floor. I admired it for a few minutes (the Cerenkov radiation was lovely), then back to the conference.
