Limey is a slang term primarily used in the United States, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa to refer to an English or British person, or someone of British descent. The term originated in the 19th century from the practice of the British Royal Navy issuing lime juice to sailors to prevent scurvy, a disease caused by vitamin C deficiency. Sailors were thus nicknamed "lime-juicers", which was later shortened to "limey".
