Many companies could have avoided layoffs if they would have had good hiring practices and pipeline. I’ve met, observed, talked with a ton of candidates in my career, and anecdotally from about 100 applicants (pre-filtered resumes already) you are lucky if you hire one.

Don’t hire as a gesture of kindness, it’s misplaced here. You screwing up the candidate’s life. Many people who apply are just not the right fit.

Once hired, invest time to grow them. Push them to their limits, allow them to take increasingly higher risks, and be supportive regardless of if they want to stay or grow towards other roles.

In the end, companies come and go, people is the real value. Build teams, relations and lives.

Follow for more practical hiring wisdoms.

P.S. Before you decide to hire, ask yourself if you are bleeding and suffering. If not, you don’t need to hire, you need to cut inefficiencies.
