Isn't Port Douglas close to stunning hinterland, rainforests etc etc and good access to the reef? I would stay there for all that. Even if near a beach, I hate swimming in the sea (and sand in pants) so wouldn't visit - hitting the (resort) pool and deck chairs instead every time. 🏊♀️
(Salvaging reputation) - Of course, early / late walks on a beach are very nice.
Edit - I may be thinking of Cairns rather than Port Douglas.
