I have never understood the "socialization" arguement. Do you want you kids to learn how to interact socially with other kids who are just figuring it out themselves? Or socialize with adults in a business environment (them helping take care of a shop) or an adult social environment (obviously not a party one but, a more social get together).

Parents just interacting with other adults and children of "school age" teaching social cues for speech and behavior.

As for the learning, small local cooperatives if the parents are unequipped or unable to teach higher level subjects, work well. The key is having education based on the goal of accomplishing tasks not for the sake of knowing things.
