Germans developed a sudden amnesia about who was a Nazi & who participated in what in the years after the war.
So many people were guilty of participation, and many of those who *weren't* personally as guilty still didn't want to admit the role they fulfilled by their passivity & the tolerance they had for the known Nazis among their family & friends.
You can't put everyone on trial. You can't create broad accountability that way.
There have to be other ways of addressing the rot within.
