Yeah, just the other day I was picking my nephew up from an after school club he signed up for. He was chatting with the teacher and he asked her "what's ten thousand times ten MILLION?" She answered almost immediately "Oh, that's just one hundred billion."
My nephew was shocked that she could do the math so quickly in her head, and said "WOW! YOU'RE SO SMART!!!"
Of course, she wasn't ACTUALLY performing dozens of single digit multiplications in her head immediately. So she explained that she was just adding the number of zeros together to get the final result.
Then she said "if I was actually smart then I would be able to solve that Rubiks cube like you did just now.
Of course my nephew wasn't holding all of the colors in his head at once and visualizing every possible move he could make. He was just recognizing small patterns and following algortithms that he had memorized.
What really matters is not intelligence, but wisdom. I've been trying to teach my nephew that with great power comes great responsibility, but I worry that it's going to take some kind of tragedy for Peter to learn that little piece of wisdom.
