I never said any of those people were blind. Communists can see exactly how shitty the Soviet Union was, and Libertarians can see all the same problems everybody else does clear as day.
These people are 100% rational. Even when someone says something irrational, it's more likely that they are just bad at articulating themselves than anything else. Everybody is also 100% emotional for that matter, including me. Everything I believe about right and wrong is due to my emotions. I would be completely lost without them, as would everybody else.
You say that people start out with their conclusion and then look for evidence to match what they already believe. You say that the problem is that they start out with their conclusion, but I disagree. I believe that the problem is that they look for evidence once they have already come to a conclusion. That is just insecure and silly!
The fact that people get upset and try to engage with people who disagree with them is probably one of the greatest traits of humanity. Even if all they can come up with are shallow insults that don't incorporate anything about whether the person was right or wrong or anything that the other person actually said or did, it's still better than the world where they just pretend the dissenter doesn't exist in the first place.
Useless and unproductive debates are not the result of a lack of evidence or a lack of openmindedness. Useless and unproductive debates are the result of a lack of perspective and a lack of ability to articulate it.
