There is some truth to what you say, but I worked 2 full time jobs for 2 years along with a part time job on the weekends, then a job and a half for 3 years following that. My grandfather worked 3 jobs his entire life. My father was a chemist and worked a second job the first 12 years of his married life.
In the 50's my grandparents had one car, a 1000 sf house, on a 1200 square foot lot. no a/c, no dishwasher, no microwave and they never flew on a plane. It wasn't as rosy as all that
