A good guide to Celsius for people who don't have a feel for it but don't want a formula.
If you do want a formula here's a reasonably easy way to convert in your head:
F=1.8C+32
To multiply by 1.8:
1) first multiply C by 2, which is easy mental math.
2) Then move the decimal one space to the left to get 0.2C.
3) then subtract 0.2C from 2C to get 1.8C. Round liberally to whole numbers at this step. It makes subtraction easier and will only mess up your answer by at most a little bit.
4) finally, add 32.
For instance if C=43 then:
2C is 86
So 0.2C is 8.6
So 1.8C is ≈ 86-9 = 77
And add 32 to get 109° farenheit. The actual value is 109.4° F.

This morning we have a lot of libs on here supporting mandatory voting in the US -- "We are very smart and rational and Harris would have won if more people voted so we have to make them!" Have they even considered how laws are enforced and who they're enforced against?
A government of, by, and for the people where cops extort, hurt, and kill those very same people for not voting -- what a great idea! But of course the same goes for all their laws, so I guess yet again I'm upset that liberals aren't anarchists. Sigh.

When I moved to Virginia in 1998 I really had to come to terms with the fact that southerners were one of the very few minorities that Yankees felt free to mock openly. Now there are even fewer but it's still acceptable somehow.

I was smoking some lovely hash last week and I realized I could use a few more pipes. I looked on eBay, but then I realized that I had everything on hand to make one myself. I've made a lot of things out of clay but for some reason it never occurred to me too make a pipe. This came out of the kiln this morning and I plan to test it out thoroughly later today, around 4:20 I imagine!
It's porcelain painted with a cobalt oxide wash. I don't use much glaze in the studio -- mostly oxides and Mason stains either as washes or blended into the clay body. I just love porcelain and in this case it let me make the stem very thin.

Like @npub1nf4…nqe4 says, the other four are convenient for some problems in that they make the calculations somewhat more efficient. This is one common role of abstraction in math. We find ourselves repeating a process e.g. with sin and cos often and realize that defining e.g. tan and sec can make the process more streamlined and/or reveal similarities between it and other processes that weren't so apparent pre-abstraction.
For instance, using trig substitutions to rationalize \sqrt{a-bx^2} with x=sin u seems different to rationalizing \sqrt{ax^2+b}, but once you introduce tan and sec and derive the version of the pythagorean theorem in those terms it's easier to see the parallelism in the method.
Also, taking things to extremes, a new paper on the arxiv shows that all elementary functions can be expressed in terms of the constant 1 and the binary operator eml(x,y)=e^x-ln(y), so we could actually do away with all trig functions and pretty much everything else too!

I don't know if I'm the last person to know this but I just learned about Soulseek, which is music sharing software that's different from torrenting. It works so well and the selection is beyond belief! I found two albums that I've had on vinyl forever but could never find digital versions.
I started with a Linux flatpack, which hung my computer a couple times -- this *never* happens on Linux -- but then found out about Licorice, which is a client with a Debian repository and it's working great! I just finished Riot Women and it was just about perfect! Five menopausal women form a punk band and write angry songs about their lives. Sally Wainwright's scripts are tragic and hilarious, the acting is excellent. There's nothing about this show I didn't love. And it passes the Bechdel test with flying colors.
One big problem with TV shows (and probably movies, but I don't watch many) about fictional musicians that rely on original music is that the music sucks. I liked Nashville a lot as a soap opera but it's musically blah with one or two exceptions and they're mostly that way. This show is an exception. The songs probably aren't going to make the hit parade IRL but they're totally listenable.

Totally British according to the wiki. I've never heard or seen the phrase used in the US and never been to Britain and I never saw the movie, where the joke is explained. The first time I drove a stick was the first time I drove. I was 15, parents out of town so I threw a party. One kid got too drunk to drive home and I at least thought I wasn't so another kid drove the first kid home in her car and I followed them in the driver's manual vw beetle. I stalled it about a million times but finally was able to drive the couple of miles jerking around but not stalling and then the driving kid expertly drove the beetle back to my house.
Later in life I had a 1976 three on the tree Dodge dart and drove it for many years. Since then I've had automatics because it's better to have cars that all drivers can drive and also I'm pretty lazy
But later still my girlfriend's father gave her a manual miata for her 40th birthday and I taught her how to work the stick. So... Yes!

I thought you were asking for the probability that all three people's birthdays would be on the same day of the week every year. For that to be true you need to include the probability that all three were born after February.
If all you're looking for is the probability that the three were born on the same day of the week in their birth year then you're right that it's (1/7)(1/7).
Also, I was totally off my head with my complement calculation. What I calculated was the chance that at least two were born on the same day.

I think this is a much harder problem than that. It's necessary to account for the fact that for the situation to stay stable all three birthdays must be after February. No matter whether we have a leap year or not there are 306 days after February.
So each person has 306 ways to be born after February. The problem is that the denominator changes in a leap year and I'm not sure how to account for that, so let p be the probability that all three are born after February.
Next we want all three to be born on the same day of the week. It's easier to do this by calculating the chance that all three are born on different days. This is (7/7)(6/7)(5/7)≈0.612. So the probability that all three are born on same day of week is ≈1-0.612=0.388.
This means the probability for the whole thing is ≈p×0.388. But what's p? I have no idea. You'd probably get a pretty decent approximation by just forgetting about leap days if that's good enough.
Disclaimer: discrete probability problems are hard and I only thought about this superficially so I wouldn't be surprised if I'm totally wrong.

This truth was really driven home to me at the last place I worked by volunteering to participate in a colleague's experimental economics class bc she needed bodies to make the {games? experiments?) work. And every time most people chose equitable strategies that would consolidate future relationships rather than whatever game theory predicted. Another commenter here mentioned repeated plays, and it seems to be most people's instincts to bypass zero sum thinking by considering the future as well as the present.

I haven't read the book yet but it's on my list. My default position is that William Gillis is wrong until proven otherwise, though, and I see nothing in this article to change my mind. He traffics in abstract ideas snapped into place like semantic puzzle pieces. Does the resulting picture reflect the actual world? He never gets to that question. He assumes that if his statements make sense then they must be true, which is the fallacy underlying the idea that everything can be understood through definitions rather than through an ongoing struggle to understand what's actually happening in the messy untheorizable world.

I definitely see your point wrt literature, and I'd add William Morris, Ursula Leguin, Walter Johnson, and Brecht to your list. But I think the line is more fuzzy in other media.
So much great protest music transcends its immediate inspirations; Wobblies like Mac McClintock, Joe Hill, T-Bone Slim, Mimi Fariña's arrangement of Bread and Roses, Woody Guthrie, and any number of examples from the 1960s and on.
And in the visual arts there's Guernica, The Disasters of War, Banksy, Emory Douglas, Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, Los Four, artists working with Self-Help Graphics and Art, Corita Kent, etc.

No, they wanted an exact solution. This is a totally standard intro to calculus book and this question was very out of place, but not on just looking at it. It looked just like the problems around it, so I'm pretty sure it's some kind of editorial error. It's easy for a plausible typo to make an equation unsolveable, especially if transcendental functions are involved, so maybe it was something like that?
When I'm writing problems like this I start with the derivative so I can be sure f'(x)=0 is student-solvable and then give the students the antiderivative.

BTW are you familiar with the lost jukebox project? Jeffrey Glenn spent years collecting obscure singles of pop, garage, psychedelic,b etc, from the mid twentieth century and digitizing them. After he passed other people kept up the work and by now there are well over 200 CDs of these unknown excellent tracks. It's all on the archive for free.

I'm very happy with the Oster classic series heritage model. It has a glass jar, which is the only kind that ever feels clean to me. The blending assembly comes apart for easy and thorough cleaning, and replacement parts are readily available -- the jar itself, the gasket, and the blade unit. Also, it only has one switch.

The other day I had a fairly popular post talking about how mathematicians easily and often admit that they don't know things or don't understand things. Today at work a real-life example came up!
Original post linked to in the next toot since apparently I can't post a link and have an image at the same time ... wtf?!
I was helping a student with Calc I in my office. The question gave a function and asked for values of x where the tangent line was horizontal. The function is the first in the image.
This requires taking the derivative with the product rule. The result of this is the second in the image. Since the second term has a denominator (other than 1 of course) we need to combine the two terms so we can set the numerator to 0 and solve.
The result of this operation is the third in the image. Fractions are 0 when their denominators are 0, so the fourth line shows the equation to be solved.
The student got this far without any help but was unable to solve the equation. This is commonplace. After all, the hardest part of calculus is algebra. But I couldn't see how to solve it either, so I told the student this.
At this moment two of my colleagues were talking in the hall outside my office so I told the student I'd ask them about it. Neither knew how to solve it and told me as much. So I told the student, who was actually thrilled that none of use could solve it either.
So I asked Wolfram Alpha, which gave a solution using the Lambert W, aka the productlog function. I'm a combinatorial topologist -- I do graph theory of various kinds. I've heard of this function but otherwise know nothing at all about it. And I'm happy to admit it! Anyway, that's how mathematicians roll.

This is interesting. This bot grabs lyrics from BobDylan.com but these lyrics are different from the album version, which has:

She left here last early spring, is living there I hear.
I can't find out if the website's version is old or new. Dylan changed the lyrics after the album cover was printed but before the disks were pressed, so there's a discrepancy for the first release. I know this because I used to own a copy. But someone stole it from me so I can't check.
On the other hand Dylan is famous for changing lyrics in performance, so maybe these are new lyrics. Who knows, but what a surprise to see the bot serving up what seem on the surface to be the wrong lyrics.

Zoning laws do function like this -- they increase car dependence. But that's not all they do. Laws are tools, and tools only very rarely have just one capability. Tools created to solve one problem are often repurposed to solve many others. For instance, hammers were invented hundreds of thousands of years before nails, but now driving nails is a common use of hammers.
Laws are different from hammers in at least one important sense. Almost everyone who has a problem that a hammer can solve has access to hammers and the ability to use them. Laws, on the other hand, can only be created and can only be used by a very small group of people -- the ruling class. [1]
So as in this article, the ruling class uses zoning to increase car dependence because they make money from it in a variety of ways -- car sales, gasoline sales, oil, etc. But car dependence serves other purposes -- it makes people easier to track, to control, etc
And increasing car dependence is not the only ruling class solution provided by zoning. Zoning laws prevent people from running businesses out of their homes, increasing the likelihood that they'll have to work for wages -- without wage laborers capitalism would collapse. Zoning laws also prevent tenants from sharing rentals to the full extent possible, so more rental units get rented. Without a steady supply of tenants the landlord business -- quintessential capitalism -- would collapse.
Zoning laws also allow local governments to take houses away from their putative owners -- can't afford to fix your fences, keep your lawn mowed, keep your house painted, etc, and the city will fine you until you comply. Can't afford to pay? They'll take your house. Eventually it gets sold to someone else and both the city and your mortgage holder make money.
I'm sure that many of these uses weren't foreseeable when modern zoning was invented, but as I said, tools are continually repurposed to solve new problems. Since effectively only the ruling class is able to create laws and to use them effectively they get repurposed for their benefit.
Attributing purposes to tools rather than to those who wield them is a common fallacy, and it leads to serious analytic errors. When people say that the purpose e.g. of police is to protect people and that we just need to get them back to this original use -- in other words advocating for reform -- they're falling into this trap. Look at the capabilities of police, remember that those capabilities can be directed in many ways and only the ruling class is able to decide how the police are used, and it becomes clear that reform is a pipe dream.

[1] Sometimes people who aren't in the ruling class manage to use laws to their advantage, but these are edge cases. Not only that, but the very possibility of non-rulers using laws serves as one of capitalism's many safety valves. When it does happen it relieves pressure from below and capitalism lives another day. Such cases are also examples of the ruling class using the laws

I'm very happy with fastmail too, although it's paid. I have multiple domains and can create arbitrary usernames and subdomains for them easily and also use fastmail's large collection of domains. Also it allows custom sieve scripts for advanced handling.

On reflection over many years I've come to understand that one of the most useful things I learned as a baby mathematician was the value of admitting that I don't know what I don't know and that I don't understand what I don't understand. I definitely didn't get this at all as an undergraduate! I learned in graduate school by example -- mathematicians universally talk to one another this way because it's the only way to get some math done. Repeatedly hearing various world-experts on subject X answer questions by stating that they don't know the answer as if it's the most natural thing -- which of course it is -- teaches this lesson really effectively.

Side note: this scene was filmed north of Malibu Beach. A friend of mine grew up in Malibu and was a teenager in 1968. According to him they left the replica S of L in the sand for a while and he and his friends used to take acid and climb around on it. Or at least that's how he told it!
