It's both Valentine's Day and #iLoveFS Day today, so I'll share some of the Free Software applications that I have loved using in the past year:

I have been wondering for a while about #Nextcloud's environmental impact. It's #FreeSoftware so gives user autonomy to disable intensive features and fights planned obsolescence, but I couldn't find a mention of the environment on Nextcloud's website (better than boasting in a misleading way like some do) or any specific data...
...but after a bit of searching I found https://www.blauer-engel.de/en/products/nextcloud-server, meaning it's German-government-certified as eco-friendly within its space. Congratulations @npub1rk6…hv4q!

I must admit that the lossiness of comments is a bit irritating and is a problem that likely needs a solution, but wouldn't say that lossy federation in general is. It gives users content based on their interests in an organic, user-controllable way, and allows a truly federated platform that is actually practical as well, with relatively low resource requirements (think practicality, environment).

And the practical network-effect reason that it has little reach is that not enough people are on it yet - they're on other siloed platforms.
That's the magic of the Fediverse: you can federate with everyone and not give control to a monopolistic force... you can have choice in your platform (Mastodon, Lemmy, Pixelfed, Peertube, Misskey, Sharkey, Pleroma, Akkoma, GoToSocial, WriteFreely, WordPress, Micro.blog, ...) without excluding friends, retaining this choice for the future!

I use @npub1ncy…3x0q free and open source software every day. There's a lot of it, but one example is the ultra-customisable yet easy-to-use Linux/BSD desktop environment KDE Plasma.
I got a drawing tablet for Christmas so decided to make this fanart (CC BY-SA 4.0 Oliver Geer 2024) on Krita, another piece of KDE software (that you can use on many operating systems, not just Linux). By the way, they're fundraising: https://kde.org/fundraisers/yearend2024

Additionally, to all: if you have the means, please contribute to FOSS software you use, financially, or through bugfixing, promotion, or/and development! I do this whenever possible and it's the only way these amazing programs have been produced, and how KDE has existed since 1996!

I love KDE Plasma and personally it often feels better than Windows user-experience-wise, contrary to what one might expect due to its nonprofit, community-led status. Not to mention the customisability/freedom/privacy benefits...
However, I do need to point out here that Windows Recall is (currently) opt-in only so this story would be inaccurate unless the ex installed it on the speaker's computer.

I do quite heavily rely on autocomplete but hopefully the language server protocol support in Kate will help with that. It's probably more lightweight than KDev as well.
It seems that ZSwap is already enabled, luckily! I tried the grep command from https://forum.endeavouros.com/t/how-to-enable-zswap/39945/4 and it contained "/sys/module/zswap/parameters/enabled:Y".

Web browsing with Firefox works well (luckily I'm not someone who tends to have many tabs open), and YouTube works without buffering but defaults to 360p, the minimum video quality.
I don't use Steam, but do use VS Code which is also based off Electron. When I run it, the fan always starts. I'll probably switch to KDevelop and/or Neovim soon if this heavyweight app causes too many problems.

My current laptop is a hand-me-down Samsung R780 from 2011 which used to be running Windows 7.
I've upgraded its battery and changed its HDD to an SSD (it's so easy with these old models!) but kept the 4GB RAM, and I can use it as a daily driver that I effectively got for free. EndeavourOS and Plasma 6, like yours!
Linux makes hardware sustainability and control of one's own PC so much easier!
