I have said goodbye to Windows and installed Casuarina Linux on the CHUWI laptop. Everything is working (inc webcam and mic), except the speakers. I'll need to dig into that some more. The fan (which doesn't sound great to be honest) seems to be much less prone to turning on compared to Windows too.
I also poked around the UEFI and it seems to support S3 sleep, which is good.

Urgh the Windows sneak attack. You do something that requires a restart (why?), like rename the computer and then bam! Sneak attack! Updates to install that take an implausibly long time. Every encounter reinforces my bad opinion of this garbage operating system.

After many months work I'm pleased to have finally published the Casuarina Linux website and initial ISO. There's still things to improve, but it's been my daily driver for a while now. The next major project is packaging COSMIC desktop. I have it mostly working (I'm using it right now), but there are some things to fix before it can be merged.

Dunno wtf is up with my Mastodon instance. The media use has shot up recently. Last week it was at around 70Gb, now it's somehow at 180Gb. It's a managed instance that's getting expensive to run. Plans for self-hosting are now in motion.

If you have a ThinkPad X1 Carbon of some variety, does it support S3 sleep? There might be an option to enable it in the UEFI (Sleep State > Linux, or Modern Standby > Disabled). If so, what generation of X1 do you have?

My Jaycar multimeter that I only bought 20 years ago (/s), while at university ago has developed LCD cancer. I used it fairly recently and it was fine then. It had a good run, and probably only used two or three 9V batteries in that time.

This morning we visited Point Lookout for second breakfast (iced coffee and crossaint), then did the gorge loop walk. We saw several sea turtles surface over the course of the walk. An excellent way to spend a morning.

People need to stop using the squiggly GitHub star history charts in posts, it always looks so out of place and hard to read. It has a great search ranking for 'GitHub star history', so I can see how it ends up being used, but there are alternatives:

What an incredible waste of money that could be used on Firefox instead. Investing in AI companies when everyone agrees there's a bubble that will correct itself at some point doesn't seem like a sensible way to invest limited funds.

oh good point, I didn't think of extensions. I ran it again in a Firefox profile without extension and it made a huge difference! Now faster than Chromium: 37.6 ± 1.7.

I've had no luck with any of the Wayland desktops I've tried on this loongarch machine. All fail to start with one error or another related to graphics. X11 XFCE session seems to be working ok though.
Performance is not amazing but seems decent. E.g. browsing the modern web seems fine, including JS heavy sites like Mastodon and Mattermost. Speedometer result and allsorts build time for reference.

I got Chimera installed on the loongarch mini-PC. Installation was very smooth, basically identical to an x86_64 install. I also installed GNOME, but gnome-shell is unstable. I can log in and poke around for a brief amount of time, but then it crashes and I'm back at the login screen. Looks like I have my first project there.

indeed progress has been made! It has two SO-DIMM slots and only one is populated, so even more RAM might be possible.

Well it works, but there is a snag. It seems the fan runs full speed the whole time, and it _does not_ sound good.
Aside from that, it ships with Loongnix, a dedicated Linux distro running KDE 5. I can't seem to access the pkg servers, so haven't been able to add fastfetch or anything like that.
Seems to pull a bit under 30W when idle.

Weird new computer arrived. While it looks like a regular mini-PC it has a Loongson 3A6000 CPU with 4 cores, 8 threads and a MIPS derived instruction set architecture (ISA). The aim is to install Chimera Linux on it, and have it be a test bed for building packages, and testing software compatibility. Depending on power consumption I might give it some server duties too.

I did what is becoming my weekly hike up Mt. Coochin this morning. I had planned to do both summits, but ran out of time before I had to drop the car off for a service.
After the first hike 3 weeks ago, I've increased the length of my daily walk, and added a steep hill. It seems to be paying off. I only needed one break on the hike up today.
I saw one goanna scurry off into the scrub, and what I think was a Whip Snake, but it vanished after the initial glimpse.

I walked up Mt. Coochin again today. The first photo shows what the track is like. There's actually two peaks to Mt. Coochin and I've only been doing the first. The last photo shows the other peak and the path up it.
I also met a Goanna on the way up. It wasn't in a hurry to move so I could get past.
Despite the radar forecasting no rain it did start raining when I got back to the car park, but nothing too serious.

In the last two days I've encountered 3 different (modern) UIs that don't support click-and-drag on menus. This makes me think this might not be widely used by the people building these UIs. That is despite it being they way they have worked since at least the '80s, including the initial Mac OS and Windows releases.

I have acquired the right cable (from Bunnings no less) and now have access to all 20.4M pixels of my new display. It is quite nice. I'm going to have to tweak my workflow now that I have so much space on a single display.

I think I'd avoid Intel. They've been lagging AMD for a while, but more concerning is that multiple models seem to be physically dying. Splendid conditions for hand sanding my desk in the garage (32⁰C, dew point of 23⁰C) 😅 I think I lost 2L in sweat. All good though, I love hot, humid weather.
I previously plugged all the dud holes (see previous toot), and have re-done them slightly offset. The plugs won't win any beauty awards, but it's all underneath, so won't be seen.
I used the legs as a template & drill guide to make sure the holes line up this time, and it worked! Next is more coats of paint on the underside.

Two coats of clear on the desk top this morning, with some vigorous sanding in between.
Yesterday I added threaded inserts for the legs. Unfortunately the holes wandered off course a bit, despite centre punching… addressing that is being deferred until later.

No one could have predicted that a $47 trim router was not exactly a precision instrument. I did a test cut along some scrap wood, before starting on the real thing, but that didn't go to plan. The bit had come loose and therefore it routed a nice chunk out of the side. Turns out you have to really yank on the collet to make it tight. No matter this will be the back against the wall so it won't be visible.

Desk update after day 1: lots of sanding, rounded over most of the edges with my A$47 AliExpress trim router. Tomorrow I hope to finish the edges, drill holes for the threaded inserts, and get the first coat of paint on.

A nice Carpet Python visited tonight. Di spotted it as we were returning from a walk. We watched as it moved to the edge of our yard then effortlessly ascended a small tree, and then slid across to a large tree.
The first photo was a hand-held, manual focus job with my new macro lens, since that's what was on the camera. The snake roamed around the big tree long enough that I was able to swap lenses and get the tripod out for the rest.

Awesome! I want to get the train from Nambour to Cairns one day. I was going to do it this year for my birthday, but their booking site was terrible for finding available dates + side-by-side rail beds. I gave up and decided it would be better to call to book... but then never did. Maybe next year!

We have a new resident Tawny Frogmouth! We've seen it a number of times now, and it was on the fence opposite our house when I took my walk after work tonight.
I got the new big lens and tripod out and got some photos. Fortunately they stay still, so this 7.5s exposure worked ok.

I am surprised. My experience (up until 2017) was that macOS handled this very well. One example: you could click to launch an app in the dock, switch away to another app and when the other app finished launching it would do so behind the one you were now in. Sorry to hear that it's gone down hill.

Does anyone know why #GNOME does the thing where it shows a notification "'App name' is ready" instead of showing the actual window. I clicked the 📁 icon in the Firefox downloads drop-down to open the enclosing folder. Instead of doing that it said "Files is ready", and I had to click again on that notification to make the Files window appear. On Windows and macOS the same action opens a Finder or Explorer window directly. Weirdly if I try to reproduce it now, it opens the window as expected.

Why does Microsoft name fonts using antiquated 8.3 format? Even for comparatively new fonts like Segoe UI Emoji (`seguiemj.ttf`), which was introduced in 2013, but rebuilt as COLRv1 since then.

Stopped in at the spillway as we were passing Wivenhoe Dam today. You could see mist from the from the road. Only two of the gates were open—and only a little at that, but it was quite the spectacle.

not sure there is a way to follow the local timeline of another instance mixed with your timeline, but some clients will let you pin a remote timeline for easy access. Here's how I can do it in Moshidon on Android, I think Mona on iOS can do it too.
Tap on a user on the instance, then tap on 'bne.social' on their profile, view server info, ⋮ > Local timeline, then tap the pin in the top right. After that my home tab has a bne.social option in it.

Today I embark on a 1800 km (1118 mile) multi-day road trip, south from Queensland to Victoria. This is longest trip I've done by myself. Don't worry, I'll be taking regular breaks.

I made one of these last year too. Built in Rust and run on Deno Deploy. Takes a similar approach where a text file is used to define the mappings. The text file is translated into Rust code at compile time to produce a static array that is binary searched when handling requests. https://github.com/wezm/mooretech-shortener
