Broadway just killed its most-awarded new musical of the season after only five months.
Cats: The Jellicle Ball won three Tony Awards, made history with the first openly trans woman to win a Tony for costume design, and was grossing close to a million dollars a week. It still couldn’t survive.
Andrew Lloyd Webber says the American theater is in “dire danger.” He’s right — but the reason isn’t what most people think.
This isn’t really a story about taste, diversity, or streaming. It’s a story about money. When production costs triple (or more) while the dollar quietly loses value every year, even successful new work gets crushed by the math.
Broadway had its biggest year ever in ticket sales. At the same time, most new musicals are closing inside four or five months.
The same pattern is showing up across the arts — ballet companies cutting roles, orchestras struggling, regional theaters shrinking. Different cities, different disciplines, same underlying pressure.
If you’re an artist trying to build something that lasts longer than the next budget cycle, this is worth understanding.

James Kintore, Australian interior designer, founder of Kintore Design, co-creator of the furniture brand Matt and Kin. Published in The Local Project and Artedomus for the level of craft and intention in the work.
In 2025 he moved to Costa Rica to build life closer to a Bitcoin standard. He's using Bull Bitcoin and Simpay to pay daily expenses in sats; he's plugged into the Bitcoin Jungle community in Uvita; he's pivoting toward fine art, sculpture, and finishing a book of musings 15 years in the making.
The story I can't get out of my head: he and his collaborator Matt sourced 250-year-old French oak from a regional Victoria lumber yard — wood cut from the heart of Paris 25 years before they found it through a 10-year-old YouTube clip. They built a four-and-a-half-meter restaurant table for an Adelaide Hills chef. Materiality as a time chain.

Just back from @npub1rwh…7avv . We went to NosVegas hosted by @nprofile…evak
What a showcase. So many talented artists performing live, and the energy was electric. Unfortunately we didn’t manage to capture footage of every artist.
Biggest highlight — watching the production team make sure every artist got paid directly in Lightning zaps in real time. That’s exactly the kind of value-for-value future we’re trying to build at BFTA.

When he discovered Nostr and the ValueVerse, everything changed. A censorship-resistant home where he could finally connect directly with listeners.

We didn’t choose Strike as a second fiddle. When we applied for our Coinbase account, Strike was not operational in New York. Now the Strike is operational in New York we have a STRIKE account.

Just got denied a Coinbase account for Bitcoin For The Arts — no real reason given.
This is exactly why we exist.
We knew from day one that building a Bitcoin-native 501(c)(3) to fund sovereign artists would mean fighting the traditional system, including companies like Coinbase whose only goal is to sell fiat-wrapped digital products, not to align with Bitcoin’s moral, ethical, and sovereign ethos.
Gatekeeping like this is the perfect reminder of why BFTA matters: artists deserve funding that can’t be turned off, censored, or denied by fiat institutions.
No need to worry, fam — Strike has approved our business account now that they’re live in New York. We’re moving forward faster than ever.
This denial doesn’t stop us. It fuels us.
Let’s keep stacking culture on sound
money and prove the fiat world wrong.
